1) World Food Safety Day: 7 June

  • World Food Safety Day is observed annually on June 7.
  • The day is marked to raise awareness of the health hazards associated with unsafe food, and to highlight the significance of hygiene.
  • The theme for 2022 is ‘Safer food, better health’
  • The day was marked by the UN General Assembly in 2018.
  • The WHO and Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) jointly facilitate the observance of the day.

 

2) Blue Duke declared as state butterfly of Sikkim

  • Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on the occasion of World Environment Day on 5 June 2022 declared Blue Duke the state butterfly.
  • Blue Duke, which goes by the scientific name Bassarona durga, is unique to Sikkim and the eastern Himalayas.
  • It was discovered in the state in 1858.
  • It falls in Schedule 2 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and is a protected species in the Himalayas

 

3) Jio becomes 1st telco to give 4G services in Ladakh’s Pangong Lake

  • The Reliance Industries-backed telco Jio has become the first operator to provide 4G mobile connectivity in and around the Pangong area.
  • On 7 June 2022, Lok Sabha member from Ladakh Jamyang Tsering Namgyal inaugurated the Jio mobile tower at Spangmik village near Pangong Lake.
  • Jio already has its 4G footprints in areas like Kargil, Zanskar and Demchok in the region.

 

4) India ends their campaign at Bolat Turlykhanov Cup on 2nd position

  • India ended their campaign at the Bolat Turlykhanov Cup at Almaty in Khazakstan on the second position with 12 medals.
  • This included a tally of 6 golds, 1 silver, and 5 bronze medals in total.
  • Out of six gold medals, five were won by women.
  • Sarita Mor won her first gold medal of the 2022 season in 59 kg while Manisha won her first gold in 65 kg.
  • Iran topped the medal tally with 14 medals.

 

5) India ranks lowest in Environmental Performance Index 2022

  • India scored the lowest among 180 countries in the 2022 Environment Performance Index (EPI).
  • EPI is an analysis by researchers of Yale and Columbia University which provides a data-driven summary of the state of sustainability around the world.
  • India ranked at the bottom with a total score of 18.9, while Denmark was the top scorer as the world’s most sustainable country.

 

6) IIFA 2022 Awards Winners

  • Best Actor (Male) – Vicky Kaushal for Sardar Udham
  • Best Actor (Female) – Kriti Sanon for Mimi
  • Best Director – Vishnu Varadhan for Shershaah
  • Best Film – Shershaah
  • The International Indian Film Academy Awards, popularly known as IIFA, was held in Abu Dhabi during the first weekend of June 2022.
  • The IIFA awards were Instituted in 2000.

 

8) IISc scientists develop miniproteins that may prevent COVID infection

  • Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore have designed a new class of artificial peptides or miniproteins that they say can render viruses like SARS-CoV-2 inactive.
  • The study has been published in the journal Nature Chemical Biology.
  • The miniproteins can not only block virus entry into our cells but also clump virus particles together, reducing their ability to infect.

 

9) Nirmala Sitharaman launches Single Nodal Agency Dashboard

  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on 7 June 2022 launched Single Nodal Agency (SNA) Dashboard.
  • The SNA dashboard will provide a platform for ministries/departments to monitor the transfer of funds to states and their utilisation.
  • The dashboard was launched as part of the iconic week (6th June to 12th June 2022) celebrations of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav by the finance ministry.

 

10) Alok Kumar Choudhary to be new SBI MD

  • The centre has approved the appointment of Alok Kumar Choudhary, Deputy Managing Director of SBI as the Managing Director for a period of 2 years.
  • Choudhary, who was currently in charge of the finance portfolio, will now be in charge of corporate banking and information technology in his new role at SBI.
  • He replaces former MD Ashwani Bhatia who took charge as the whole time member of SEBI.

11) World Oceans Day: 8 June

  • World Oceans Day is celebrated on June 8 every year across the globe.
  • The purpose of this day is to raise awareness among people about the “impact of human actions on the ocean” and to mobilise citizens for their sustainable management.
  • The 2022 theme for World Oceans Day is “Revitalisation: Collective Action for the Ocean”!
  • “World Oceans Day” was officially recognised by the UN in 2008.

 

12) World Bank cuts India’s economic growth forecast to 7.5 pc for FY23

  • The World Bank on 7 June 2022 cut India’s economic growth forecast for the current fiscal 2022-23 to 7.5 per cent.
  • This is the second time that the World Bank has revised its GDP growth forecast for India in the current fiscal 2022-23 (April 2022 to March 2023).
  • In April 2022, it had trimmed the forecast from 8.7 per cent to 8 per cent and now it is projected at 7.5 per cent.

 

13) Avani Lekhara wins gold with world record at Para Shooting World Cup

  • India’s Avani Lekhara won gold at the Chateauroux Para Shooting World Cup with a world record score of 250.6 in women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 on 7 June 2022.
  • The 20-year-old shooter broke her own world record of 249.6 to secure her a spot at the 2024 Paris Paralympics.
  • SH1 category is for athletes with lower limb impairment for competition in rifle events.

 

14) Shreyas Hosur becomes first to complete ‘IRONMAN’ Triathlon

  • Shreyas Hosur from South Western Railway has become the first-ever Railway officer and also the first-ever officer from the non-uniformed Civil Services to complete ‘IRONMAN’ Triathlon.
  • The event included 3.8 km Swim, 180 km Cycling, and 42.2 km Running.
  • Shreyas completed the event in 13 hrs 26 mins on 5th June 2022, in Hamburg, Germany.

 

15) First ever National Air Sports Policy 2022 announced

  • Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has announced first-ever National Air Sports Policy-2022 in New Delhi.
  • The objective of this policy is to include India among the top air sporting nations by 2030.
  • It is also aimed at providing a safe, affordable and sustainable air sports ecosystem in the country.
  • Eleven air sports will be promoted through this policy.

 

16) Bajram Begaj elected as Albania’s new president

  • Albanian lawmakers elected Bajram Begaj, who held the post of the Chief of General Staff of the Albanian Armed Forces (AAF), as the new president of Albania on 4 June 2022.
  • Begaj is post-communist Albania’s eighth president and the third from the military ranks.
  • Begaj will take oath as the new president on July 25, 2022, to replace the outgoing President Ilir Meta.

17) World Pest Day: 6 June

  • World Pest Day is observed every year on June 6.
  • The day is observed to spread awareness about pest management and its benefits for plants and people around us.
  • The day also aims to educate people to keep the crops, trees and plants free from pests.
  • World Pest Day, also known as World Pest Awareness Day, was first celebrated in Beijing on 6 June 2017.

 

18) Union Health Minister releases 4th State Food Safety Index

  • Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya released the 4th State Food Safety Index (SFSI) on 7 June 2022.
  • It has been released by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
  • It measures the performance of States across five parameters of food safety.
  • Tamil Nadu was the top-ranking state, followed by Gujarat and Maharashtra.
