DAILY DOSE 8TH AUG CURRENT AFFAIRS
1) Hiroshima Day: 6 August
- Every year August 6 is observed as Hiroshimal Day to mark the atomic bombing of the Japanese cities during World War II.
- The first nuclear bomb was dropped over Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, & 3 days later the second bomb was dropped over Nagasaki killing millions of people in an instant.
- Hiroshima Day is observed every year to remind the world about the devastating results of nuclear weapons.
2) National Handloom Day: 7 August
- Every year, August 7 is observed as National Handloom Day in India to highlight the contribution of the handloom industry in socio-economic development and create awareness about the sector.
- The day also commemorates the Swadeshi movement that began in 1905.
- This day was celebrated for the first time in 2015.
- The govt reaffirms its resolve to protect the handloom heritage through this day.
3) Vinesh Phogat wins gold in freestyle wrestling at CWG 2022
- India’s Vinesh Phogat on 6 August 2022 won gold in women’s 53kg freestyle wrestling at the ongoing Commonwealth Games. in Birmingham.
- She defeated Sri Lanka’s Chamodya Keshani Maduravlage in the final.
- This is the third consecutive time Phogat has won gold in Commonwealth Games.
- Besides Phogat, India’s Ravi Dahiya also won a gold medal in the men’s 57kg wrestling.
4) Jagdeep Dhankhar elected 14th Vice President of India
- Former West Bengal governor & National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar was elected the 14th Vice President of India on 6 August 2022.
- Mr Dhankhar defeated the Opposition’s candidate, Ms Margaret Alva, by a margin of 346 votes.
- He will succeed M Venkaiah Naidu.
- Mr Dhankhar will take the oath of office on 11 August 2022.
5) ISRO says satellites launched by SSLV ‘no longer usable’
- ISRO said the satellites onboard its maiden Small Satellite Launch Vehicle “are no longer usable” after the SSLV-D1 placed them in an elliptical orbit instead of a circular one.
- SSLV-D1 placed the satellites into a 356×76 km elliptical orbit instead of the 356 km circular orbit.
- SSLV was carrying Earth Observation Satellite-02 and a co-passenger satellite AzaadiSAT.
6) PM Modi chairs 7th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the seventh meeting of the NITI Aayog governing council held in New Delhi on 7 August 2022.
- The meeting discussed 3 key agendas: 1- crop diversification, 2- implementation of the National Education Policy & 3- urban governance.
- NITI Aayog council includes all CMs, lieutenant governors of UTS and several Union ministers.

7) Kannan Sundaram conferred with the French govt’s ‘Chevalier award’
- Kannan Sundaram, publisher of Kalachuvadu has been conferred with the Knight of the Order of the Merit (Chevalier award) by the French government.
- He has been awarded for his contribution to the publishing collaboration between India and France.
- Kalachuvadu is a Tamil Nadu based publishing house.
- The Chevalier award is a French order of merit awarded by the President of the French Republic.
8) RBI imposes monetary penalty of Rs 32 lakhs on Indian Bank
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on 5 August 2022 imposed a fine of 32 lakh on Indian Bank for breach of directions on classification & reporting of frauds.
- Additionally, RBI also imposed a penalty of 82 lakh on Bengaluru-based Jupiter Capital, for breach of norms on submission of credit information.

9) Goa to implement 100% NEP in higher education from next academic year
- The Goa government will implement a hundred per cent of the syllabus in higher education institutes along the lines of the National Education Policy from the next academic year.
- It was announced by the Goa CM Pramod Sawant in the seventh NITI Aayog Governing Council meeting held in New Delhi on 7 August 2022.
- Karnataka became the first state in the country to implement NEP In 2021.
10) Vishwanathan Anand elected deputy president of FIDE
- Vishwanathan Anand, the five-time chess world champion, was on 7 August 2022 elected the deputy president of FIDE (International Chess Federation).
- While Arkady Dvorkovich, the incumbent president of FIDE, was re-elected for a second term.
- The elections to the world chess body were held during the FIDE Congress which is being conducted in Chennai, alongside the 44th Chess Olympiad.
