  • Japanese bombers launched a surprise aerial attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu.
  • Afghan politician Hamid Karzai was sworn in as Afghanistan’s first popularly elected president.
  • American aviator Chuck Yeager, the first person to exceed the speed of sound in flight, died at age 97.
  • First Steam Engine Ship “Enterprise” reached Calcutta.

 

1) International Civil Aviation Day: 7 December

  • International Civil Aviation Day was first observed by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) on December 7, 1994, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Chicago Convention.
  • Later, the UN General Assembly announced December 7 to be International Civil Aviation Day in 1996.
  • Theme: “Advancing Innovation for Global Aviation Development.”

 

2) CDS: First session of Combined Leadership Conclave in New Delhi.

  • Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan presided over the first session of Combined Leadership Conclave and interacted with the senior leadership of the Armed Forces in New Delhi on December 06, 2023.
  • The CDS provided an insight into modern warfare and national security.
  • Three-day conclave to focus on geo-strategic issues, national security, jointness & ‘Aatmanirbharta’ in defence.

 

3) USD 175 million loan agreement signed with ADB for MP road improvement

  • The GoI and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have signed a 175 million dollar loan agreement to improve connectivity and resilience of roads in the state of Madhya Pradesh.
  • The project will upgrade about 500 km of state highways and major district roads to a standard two-lane feature.
  • These roads will incorporate climate- and disaster-resilient design and innovative road safety elements.

 

4) Bangladesh eradicates kala-azar, India on track too but challenges on

  • Bangladesh recently achieved a major public health goal when it eradicated visceral leishmaniasis, commonly known as kala-azar, raising the question of when India would wipe out the debilitating, often fatal, parasitic disease.
  • Challenges in sustaining the momentum of the fight persist, particularly in tackling post-disease symptoms and HIV co-infections.

 

5) India-born media veteran Dr Samir Shah selected as new BBC chairman

  • Dr Samir Shah, an India-born media executive with over 40 years of experience in TV production and journalism, has been named as the UK government’s preferred candidate to take over as the new BBC chairman.
  • He was honoured with CBE (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) by Queen Elizabeth II in 2019 for services to television and heritage, will replace Richard Sharp.

 

6) ‘Garba’ dance included in UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list

  • UNESCO has approved the inclusion of Gujarat’s traditional Garba dance in its `Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity’.
  • India had nominated Garba, performed across Gujarat and in many other parts of the country during the Navratri festival, for inclusion in the list.

 

7) PM Modi to inaugurate ‘Uttarakhand Global Investors Summit 2023’

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate ‘Uttarakhand Global Investors Summit 2023’ being held at Forest Research Institute, Dehradun.
  • The two-day summit is being organized on the theme of “Peace to Prosperity”.
  • ‘Uttarakhand Global Investors Summit 2023’ is a step towards establishing Uttarakhand as a new investment destination.

 

8) Impatiens karuppusamyi : New Species in Southern Western Ghat

  • Impatiens karuppusamyi, a new species discovered from the Southern Western Ghats.
  • The researchers of Botanical Survey of India (BSI) have discovered a new species of plant from Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve, Tamil Nadu.
  • The species is named after Dr. S Karuppusamy (Madhura College, Tamil Nadu) for his significant contributions to the taxonomy of south Indian angiosperms.

 

9) PM Modi to address 2nd Edition of flagship Financial Technology event

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the 2nd Edition of the flagship Financial Technology event – Infinity Forum 2.0.
  • The event is hosted by the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) and Gujarat International Finance Tec-City,GIFT City.
  • The 2nd edition of the Forum will be centered on the theme ‘GIFT-IFSC: Nerve Centre for New Age Global Financial Services.

 

10) Armed Forces Flag Day: 7 December

  • Every year, December 7 is observed as the Armed Forces Flag Day in India to honour the martyrs, veterans and serving personnel of the defence forces.
  • The day has been observed annually since 1949 to remember the services of the Army, Navy and Air Force, and collect funds to ensure their and their family’s well-being.

 

11) 59th Fertiliser Association of India Annual Seminar 2023 in New Delhi

  • Union Mansukh Mandaviya addresses inaugural session of 59th Fertiliser Association of India Annual Seminar 2023 in New Delhi.
  • India is the first nation to introduce Nano fertilisers such as Nano DAP and Nano Urea through the Indian Research ecosystem.
  • Government has set up two lakh Model Retail outlets known as Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samridhi Kendras.
