1) Suranjan Das appointed as the President of ‘AIU’

  • Jadavpur University Vice-Chancellor Suranjan Das was appointed as the President of The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) on 5 July 2022.
  • Professor Das will be the Association’s 101st President and takes over from G. Thiruvasagam.
  • His tenure will be for one year from 1 July 2022.
  • Professor Das has won acclaim as a specialist in South Asian History and Politics.

 

2) Indian startup IG Drones wins ‘Best Drone Organisation Award’ 2022

  • The Delhi-based IG Drones has been felicitated with the 2022 “Best Drone Organization – Start-up Category” by Airwards.
  • It has been selected for the award for its approach of helping local communities & giving access to technology to various stakeholders during natural disasters and calamities.
  • Airwards is the 1st panoptic global awards programme dedicated to the positive use of drones.

 

3) S Jaishankar to participate in G-20 Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Bali

  • External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar will visit Bali in Indonesia on the 7th and 8th of July 2022 to participate in the G20 Foreign Ministers’ meeting.
  • During his visit, Dr Jaishankar will hold several bilateral meetings with his counterparts from other G20 member states.
  • India will also convene the G20 leaders’ summit in J&K in 2023 for the first time.

 

4) Odisha woman gets a forest in her name

  • Forest officials in Odisha’s Bonai forest division have named a small patch of a forest after a daily-wager changemaker woman, Sarojini Mohanta.
  • She created the forest from scratch in just two years.
  • Mohanta was hired to look after the saplings planted as a part of the reforestation of the area under the District Mineral Foundation programme.

 

5) Former India goalkeeper EN Sudhir passes away

  • Former India international EN Sudhir, who played as a goalkeeper for India in the 1970s, passed away in July 2022.
  • Sudhir, who made his international debut against Indonesia in Rangoon (currently Yangon) in the Olympic qualifiers in 1972, represented India in 9 matches.
  • He was also part of the national team in the 1973 Merdeka Cup and the Asian Games squad in 1974.

 

6) Alfiya Pathan and Gitika win gold medals at Elorda Boxing Cup 2022

  • Youth World Boxing champions Alfiya Pathan & Gitika won gold medals at the first edition of the Elorda Boxing Cup in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan on 4 July 2022.
  • Alfiya Pathan defeated Lazzat Kungeibayeva in the women’s 81kg category while Gitika defeated Kalaivani Srinivasan in the 48kg category.
  • India concluded its campaign with an overall tally of 14 medals (2 Gold, 2 Silver & 10 Bronze).

 

7) SBI General Insurance launches cyber insurance plan

  • SBI General Insurance has launched the Cyber VaultEdge insurance plan.
  • It is a comprehensive cyber insurance cover for individuals that provides protection against financial losses arising from cyber risks and attacks.
  • It covers unauthorised e-transactions, loss of wages resulting from identity theft and instances impacting online reputation including social media trolling and bullying.

 

8) Adani Sportsline partners as Principal Sponsor with IOA

  • Adani Sportsline, the sports arm of the Adani Group, has inked a long-term principal sponsorship deal with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
  • Under this agreement, It will be the official partner of the Indian contingent during the upcoming Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022, the Hangzhou Asian Games 2022, & the Paris Olympic Games 2024.
  • IOA founded in – 1927
  • IOA President – Anil Khanna

 

9) New Zealand declares equal pay for male & female cricketers

  • New Zealand Cricket (NZC) on 5 July 2022 announced a ground-breaking agreement, which will see men & women players getting paid the same match fees.
  • It is a 5-year agreement between NZC and the New Zealand Cricket Players Association (NZCPA) and it will start on 1 August ’22.
  • This is the first time that the professional environments of men and women have been combined in a single agreement.

 

10) Winners of “Fields Medal 2022” announced

  • 4 mathematicians, including Ukrainian Maryna Viazovska, were awarded the prestigious Fields Medal for the year 2022 on 5 July ’22 in Finland.
  • The other 3 winners are Hugo Duminil-Copin, June Huh & James Maynard.
  • Viazovska is only the second female Fields Medalist, after the Iranian Maryam Mirzakhani in 2014.
  • Fields Medal is awarded every four years to mathematicians under the age of 40.

 

11) Indian Navy’s INS SATPURA and P81 participate in the RIMPAC Exercise

  • Indian Navy’s indigenous Frigate INS Satpura & P81 aircraft are taking part in the 28th edition of the biennial Rim of Pacific (RIMPAC-22), the world’s largest international maritime exercise.
  • They are taking part in the harbour phase of the exercise at Pearl Harbour in the US.
  • INS Satpura reached Hawaii on 27 Jun ’22 while P81 aircraft arrived on 02 Jul ’22 to take part in the exercise.

 

12) World Zoonoses Day: 6 July

  • World Zoonoses Day is observed every year on July 6 to commemorate the first vaccination administered against a zoonotic disease like Ebola, Avian influenza, and West Nile virus.
  • Zoonoses is an infectious disease that spread from animals to humans.
  • The first vaccination against a zoonotic disease was successfully administered on July 6, 1885, by a French biologist, Louis Pasteur.

 

13) SBI Life signs bancassurance pact with Paschim Banga Gramin Bank

  • The Paschim Banga Gramin Bank has joined hands with SBI Life Insurance for a bancassurance pact.
  • The partnership will see all the branches of Paschim Banga Gramin Bank across West Bengal offer SBI Life’s range of protection, wealth creation, credit life, annuity and savings products.
  • Bancassurance is an arrangement between a bank and an insurance company.
