1) Know About: Booker Prize

  • Booker Prize or Man Booker Prize was formerly known as Booker McConnell Prize established in 1969.
  • It is a prestigious British award given annually by Booker Prize Foundation.
  • “Tomb of Sand, has become the first book written in an Indian language to be awarded the International Booker Prize.
  • The 50,000-pound ($63,000) is the prize money.

 

2) 10 more Indian wetlands sites get Ramsar

  • India adds 10 more wetlands designated as Ramsar sites to make total 64 sites covering an area of 12,50,361 hectares in the country.
  • The 10 new sites include: Six sites in Tamil Nadu and One each in Goa, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha.
  • Recently in July, 5 wetland sites achieved the same recognition.
  • With 10 New Protected Wetlands, India Equals China In Having Most Ramsar Sites.

 

3) US Senate approves Sweden, Finland joining NATO with majority votes

  • The US Senate has approved Finland and Sweden’s accession to NATO.
  • The Nordic countries, which had long maintained neutrality, launched a bid to join the 30-member alliance in light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
  • Before the accession protocols can enter into force, they must be ratified by all 30 NATO member states, two-thirds of which have already given their approval for the new members.

 

4) Russia becomes India’s third-largest coal supplier in July

 

  • Russia became India’s third-largest coal supplier in July 2022, with imports rising by over a fifth compared with June to a record 2.06 million tonnes.
  • Russia has historically been the sixth-largest supplier of coal to India, behind Indonesia, South Africa, Australia, and the United States, with Mozambique and Colombia alternatingly featuring in the top five.

 

5) India, US to hold mega military exercise in Uttarakhand’s Auli in Oct

  • India and the US will conduct a fortnight-long mega military exercise in Uttarakhand’s Auli in October 2022.
  • The 18th edition of exercise “Yudh Abhyas” is scheduled to take place from October 14 to 31.
  • The exercise is aimed at enhancing understanding, cooperation and interoperability between the two armies.
  • The last edition of the exercise took place in October 2021 in Alaska in the US.

 

6) Indian Judoka Tulika Maan claims silver medal

  • Indian Judoka Tulika Maan bagged the silver medal in the women’s 78 kg final against Sarah Adlington of Scotland.
  • This took India’s medal tally at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games to 16.
  • Indian weightlifter Gurdeep Singh bagged the bronze medal in the men’s 109-plus kg final with a combined weight of 390kg.
  • India’s Saurav Ghosal clinched the bronze medal in squash men’s singles.

 

7) Govt sets target of increasing Natural Gas in energy mix by 15%

  • The Government has set a target of increasing Natural Gas in the primary energy mix by 15% by 2030.
  • At present, the use of Natural Gas is only 6.3%.
  • To increase the Natural Gas usage, initiatives like the expansion of National Gas Grid to 33,500 km, setting up of Liquefied Natural Gas terminals and allocation of domestic gas to CNG for transport and PNG for domestic purposes are taken.

 

8) Govt sets target of increasing Natural Gas in energy mix by 15%

  • The Government has set a target of increasing Natural Gas in the primary energy mix by 15% by 2030.
  • At present, the use of Natural Gas is only 6.3%.
  • To increase the Natural Gas usage, initiatives like the expansion of National Gas Grid to 33,500 km, setting up of Liquefied Natural Gas terminals and allocation of domestic gas to CNG for transport and PNG for domestic purposes are taken.

 

9) National Health Authority joins hands with Quality Council of India

  • The National Health Authority (NHA) has onboarded the Quality Council of India (QCI) for six months.
  • It has been done so to accredit and rate HMIS (Health Management Information System)/ LMIS (Laboratory Information Management System) solutions that have integrated with Ayushman. Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).

 

10) Adani Enterprises partners with Israel Innovation Authority

  • Adani Enterprises, the business incubation arm of the Adani Group, has signed an MoU with the Israel Innovation Authority for cooperation in technological innovations.
  • The deal includes creation of a ‘cutting-edge innovation platform!
  • It will allow Adani arms to access tech solutions provided by Israeli start-ups whereby selected innovation projects will be supported by the partnership.

 

11)1st session of India-Mauritius High-Powered Joint Trade Committee held

  • India and Mauritius held the 1st session of India-Mauritius High-Powered Joint Trade Committee on 1-3 August 2022 in New Delhi.
  • The High-Powered Joint Trade Committee had been constituted as per the mandate of the India-Mauritius Comprehensive Economic Cooperation and Partnership agreement (CECPA).
  • CECPA is the first trade agreement signed by India with a country in Africa.

 

12) Indian Navy’s all-women aircrew creates history

  • In a rare feat, five women officers of the Indian Navy carried out the first independent maritime reconnaissance and surveillance mission in the North Arabian Sea onboard a Dornier aircraft, in August 2022.
  • The aircraft was captained by Mission Commander, Lt Commander Aanchal Sharma.
  • The INAS 314 is a frontline naval air squadron based at Porbandar, Gujarat.

 

13) Justice Uday U Lalit to be the 49th Chief Justice of India

  • Justice Uday U Lalit is set to take over as the 49th Chief Justice of India (CJI) on August 27, 2022 with the incumbent, NV Ramana recommending the former as his successor.
  • Lalit will have a short tenure of fewer than three months.
  • He is only the second judge after justice SM Sikri elevated directly from the bar who will go on to become the CJI.
  • Sikri was CJI between 1971 and 1973.

 

14) World’s largest floating solar power plant to be built in MP

  • A floating solar power plant is going to be built in Madhya Pradesh’s Khandwa.
  • Said to be the world’s largest floating solar plant, it will generate 600 Megawatt power by 2022-23.
  • The project is estimated to be worth over 3000 crores.
  • Recently, India’s largest floating solar power project had become operational in Telangana.
