1) West Bengal assembly passes university laws amendment 2023

  • The West Bengal University Laws (Amendment) Bill 2023 was passed in the Assembly on 4 August 2023, replacing the Governor with the Chief Minister as the Chancellor of all state-aided universities.
  • The Punchhi Commission recommended that the Governor should not be burdened with positions and powers which are not envisaged under the Constitution.

 

2) England cricketer Alex Hales announces international retirement

  • Alex Hales, the opening batter for England, has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 34.
  • He played 11 Test matches, 70 ODIs and 75 T20Is for England and scored 2419 runs at an average of 37.79 and a strike rate of 95.72 in ODIs.
  • Hales scored 2074 runs at a strike rate of 138.35 and average of 30.95 in T20Is.

 

3) SC appoints former HC judge Jayant Nath as interim chief of DERC

  • Justice Jayant Nath has been appointed as the interim chairperson of the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) by the Supreme Court.
  • The appointment was made after the Delhi government and office of LG left it to the apex court to choose a former Judge as Chairperson of the Commission.
  • The appointment is on a pro-term basis as an interim arrangement.

 

4) McDonald’s unveils India’s 1st airport drive-thru restaurant in Mumbai

  • McDonald’s India (West & South) has launched the nation’s first-ever Airport Drive-Thru Restaurant in Mumbai.
  • This is the first McDonald’s restaurant in Mumbai to operate 24×7.
  • It has several innovative features, including a dedicated lane and customer ordering display for customers.
  • The restaurant also features 4 self-ordering kiosks (SOK) to help customers save time.

 

5) Ex-Nepal captain Gyanendra Malla retires from international cricket

  • Gyanendra Malla, former captain of the Nepal national cricket team, announced his retirement from national and international cricket.
  • Malla scored 876 runs in ODIs and 883 runs in T201s, including one century and two fifties.
  • In T20Is, his highest score is 107 against Bhutan in 2019, which is Nepal’s second-highest individual score in the format.
  • He made his international debut in 2014.

 

6) SBI reports 178 pc increase in net profits in Q1 of FY24

  • State Bank of India (SBI) reported first-quarter net profit surged 178.25% to ₹16,884 crore as compared with ₹6,068 crore a year earlier on account of improvement in asset quality and loan growth.
  • This is the bank’s highest-ever net profit.
  • The high profit is due to lower Non-Performing Assets (NPA), lower provisioning and an increase in the loan book.

 

7) Cabinet clears new telecom bill and postal services bill

  • The Union Cabinet has cleared the Draft Indian Telecommunications Bill 2023.
  • The bill aims to increase the scope of telecommunication services by including over-the-top (OTT), broadcasting, internet and broadband services.
  • The bill will replace Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, the Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act, 1933, and the Telegraph Wires (Unlawful Possession) Act, 1950.

 

8) Google celebrates 109th birth year of trangender cyclist Willy Bruyn

  • Google celebrated the 109th birth anniversary of Belgian cyclist Willy De Bruyn with a doodle.
  • He was intersex, with a combination of male and female biological traits.
  • He won his first cycling race at 15 years old and became the female world champion cyclist in 1934 and 1936.
  • In 2019, a street in Brussels was named after him, the first road in the city to be named after an intersex person.

 

9) PM Modi to attend BRICS Summit in Johannesburg on Aug 22

  • PM Modi will attend the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 22 August 2023 after being invited by President Ramaphosa.
  • Earlier in July 2023, Algeria applied to join the BRICS group.
  • The BRICS group currently comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
  • 25 countries have applied to join BRICS, and a decision on expansion will be taken at Johannesburg.

 

10) President of India to inaugurate “Festival of Libraries 2023” on 5Aug

  • The Ministry of Culture is organizing the “Festival of Libraries 2023”, held on the 5th-6th August 2023 in New Delhi.
  • President of India Droupadi Murmu will inaugurate the two-day festival.
  • The festival will also highlight iconic libraries from across the world in order to initiate a conversation on the modernization and digitization of libraries in India.

 

11) PM Modi to launch revamp of 508 railway stations at ₹24,470 crore

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for the redevelopment of 508 railway stations spread across the country virtually on August 6.
  • According to the Ministry of Railways, the redevelopment work is done at an estimated cost of 24,470 crore.
  • These 508 stations are spread across 27 states and union territories, including 55 each in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

 

12) Government restricts import of laptop, computers, tablets

  • The Indian government has imposed restrictions on importing laptops, tablets, and personal computers falling under HSN 8741 category.
  • Import of restricted items will be allowed only against a valid license, except for imports under Baggage Rules.
  • Exemption from import licensing is allowed for one laptop, tablet, all-in-one Personal Computer or Ultra small form factor Computer.
