1) International Firefighters Day: 4 May

  • International Firefighters Day is observed on 4 May every year.
  • It was first marked on May 4, 1999.
  • It is a time when the world’s community can recognize and honour the sacrifices that firefighters make to ensure that their communities and environment are as safe as possible.
  • The day was introduced by JJ Edmondson.

 

2) Harshada Sharad Garud first Indian to win gold medal at IWF C’ship

  • In Weightlifting, Harshada Sharad Garud scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win a gold medal at the IWF Junior World Championships at Heraklion in Greece on 2 May 2022.
  • She lifted 153-kilogram in the 45-kilogram weight category, which included 70 kilograms in Snatch.
  • Turkey’s Bektas Cansu bagged the silver medal while Moldova’s Teodora-Luminita Hincu won the bronze medal.

 

3) Tata Steel to complete NINL acquisition in current quarter

  • Tata Steel will complete the acquisition of Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited (NINL) by the end of the current quarter (April to June 2022).
  • The acquisition of NINL is critical for Tata Steel to build a dedicated long products complex.
  • On January 31, 2022, Tata Steel announced winning the bid for acquiring a 93.71 percent stake in Odisha-based steel maker NINL for Rs 12,100 crore.

 

4) India to be the official country of honour for the Cannes Film Market

  • India will be the official country of honour at the Cannes Film Market, scheduled to take place from May 17 to May 25, 2022.
  • A brand new restoration of Satyajit Ray’s movie “Pratidwandi” will also be presented in an exclusive screening at the movie gala.
  • It has been restored under the National Film Heritage Mission, a project undertaken by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

 

5) Embassy of Israel, IIT-Delhi to develop six-week mentorship programme

  • The Embassy of Israel in India has collaborated with IIT Delhi and the WEE Foundation for a six-week mentorship program for women entrepreneurs.
  • 26 women entrepreneurs from the WEE Foundation were selected and mentored on various topics, including validating ideas, building a team, fundraising, etc.
  • Entrepreneurs were mentored by renowned mentor Nava Swersky from Israel.

 

6) ITC partners IIT Delhi to support research on sustainability

  • ITC Ltd. has signed an MoU with IIT Delhi, to back research that will help India achieve its Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Both will support research in identified Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) areas.
  • Currently, the areas identified for research are energy storage, low carbon cold transportation, and plastic bio degradation.

 

7) 5×5 Pro Basketball League to be launched in India later in 2022

  • A first-of-its-kind 5×5 Pro Basketball League, featuring 12 teams will be launched later in 2022.
  • Titled ‘Elite Pro Basketball League’, the league is being organized by Elite Sports India (ESI).
  • The 12 franchise include Punjab Gladiators, Jaipur Giants, Kochi Pachers, Delhi Dominators, Lucknow Swarm, Hyderabad Hoops, Mumbai Stars, Chandigarh Conquerors, Pune Pythons, etc.

 

8) Odisha government released Rs 804 crore in bank accounts of farmers

  • Under the Krushak Assistance for Livelihood and Income Augmentation (KALIA) scheme, the Odisha government released Rs 804 crore on 3 May 2022.
  • It will benefit 40 lakh farmers of Odisha.
  • An exhibition stall at the State Level Farm Machinery Testing and Training Centre in Bhubaneswar’s Baramunda was also inaugurated on the occasion.

 

9) PM Modi and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz sign Joint Declaration

  • PM Modi and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, on 2 May 2022, signed a green energy pact in Berlin as a major step toward climate action.
  • Called the Green and Sustainable energy partnership, the agreement was made at the Federal Chancellery in Berlin at the 6th India-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultations.
  • India will receive 10 billion euros in aid by 2030 to boost the use of clean energy.

10) Naresh Kumar has been appointed as the new Director of the Corbett Tiger Reserve in Uttarakhand.

  • He is an Indian Forest Service officer of the 1999 batch.
  • Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Girija Shankar Pandey has been given the additional charge of CEO Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA).

 

11) India’s 1st XE COVID mutant variant confirmed by INSACOG

  • India’s first case of Omicron mutant variant XE has been confirmed by the Indian SARS-CoV2 Genomics Sequencing Consortium (INSACOG).
  • The XE variant is a “recombinant” virus that contains the mutations found in BA.1 as well as BA.2 variants of Omicron and was first discovered in the UK in Jan 2022.
  • XE shows a slightly higher transmission rate and also a higher growth rate above that of BA.2.

 

12) Prasar Bharati Member Finance D PS Negi gets additional charge

  • Prasar Bharati Member Finance D P S Negi has been given the additional charge of member personnel of the body by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry.
  • Negi is an Indian Economic Services Officer of the 1985 batch.
  • Before joining Prasar Bharati, Negi was Principal Advisor at the Labour and Employment Ministry.
  • He was also the Director-General of the Labour Bureau for more than a year.

 

13) Satyajit Ray film festival being organized from 2-4 May 2022

  • Satyajit Ray film festival is being organized from 2-4 May 2022.
  • It is being organized by the National Museum of Indian Cinema, Mumbai.
  • He is the only Indian director who received the Oscar award.
  • Director Anik Dutta’s film ‘Aparajito- a tribute to Satyajit Ray’ was the opening film.
  • Ray’s 1955 classic “Pather Panchali” will be the closing film of the festival on May 4.

 

14) India, Germany sign agreement on triangular development cooperation

  • External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met German Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Svenja Schulze on 2 May 2022.
  • They signed agreements on triangular development cooperation and renewable energy partnership in May 2022.
  • Jaishankar also met his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock and signed an agreement on a direct encrypted connection between the two foreign offices.

 

15) “Once Upon a Time in Calcutta” awarded at IFFLA

  • Aditya Vikram Sengupta’s “Once Upon a Time in Calcutta” bagged the top award of Grand Jury Prize for Best Feature Film at the closing ceremony of the 2022 Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA).
  • Anmol Sidhu’s “Jaggi” won the inaugural Uma da Cunha Award for best feature film debut, as well as the Audience Choice Award for best feature.

 

16) JAIN University becomes the Khelo India University Games Champions

  • JAIN (Deemed-to-be University) became the . winner of the Khelo India University Games 2021 on 3 May 2022.
  • The University team topped the chart with 20 gold, 7 silver and 5 bronze medals.
  • It was followed by Lovely Professional University (LPU) with 17 golds and Punjab University with 15 gold medals.
  • A total of 20 games were played and saw participation of 3900 students from 210. Universities.

 

 

17) Arunachal tops among states in GST revenue collection growth in April

  • Arunachal Pradesh has recorded a GST collection of Rs 196 crore in April 2022, registering a year-on-year growth of 90 percent, the highest among states.
  • The northeastern state had mopped up Rs 103 crore in 2021.
  • The state had registered a 14 percent GST revenue growth in March 2022 with a collection of Rs 105 crore, up from Rs 92 crore in 2021.

 

18) 4th edition of Meghalaya Games-2022 begins in Shillong

  • In Meghalaya, the 4th edition of Meghalaya Games-2022 began on 2 May 2022 at various sports facilities in Shillong.
  • A total of over 2,500 athletes from 19 different disciplines are participating in the mega sports event held as part of the 50th Statehood Day Celebrations.
  • The games will conclude on 7 May 2022.
  • The golf event will be held at the iconic Shillong Golf Course.

 

19) Tripura to introduce veterinary health services on wheels

  • Tripura govt will introduce mobile veterinary health services for ailing farm animals.
  • 12 veterinary mobile vans equipped with surgery facilities, laboratories, and doctors would provide health services to ailing animals such as cows, goats, and pigs.
  • A state-level toll-free number will be operationalized and help will be provided within 20 mins of receiving calls from farm animal owners.

 

20) Adani Transmission to invest €3,850 cr Green Transmission Investment

  • Adani Transmission has received its shareholders’ approval to issue 1.56 cr shares worth around 3,850 cr on a preferential basis to Green Transmission Investment.
  • Currently, IHC Capital Holding LLC is the principal shareholder of Green Transmission.
  • The deal is a part of a USD 2 bn investment to be made by the UAE’s International Holding Company (IHC) in three Adani Group companies.
