1) Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation to be set up
- The Maharashtra Govt has approved to set up the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation.
- The state cabinet has also approved a proposal to use ICT or solutions based on Information and Communication Technology for solid waste management in all civic bodies across the state.
- The state cabinet has further approved to set up a 350-bed regional psychiatric hospital in Shirur.
2) Foreign Ministers meeting of SCO member countries to begin in Goa
- A two-day meeting of foreign ministers of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) will begin on 3 May 2023 in Goa.
- India, which took over the chairmanship of the SCO grouping in September 2022, is the host in 2023.
- The SCO has Russia, India, China, Pakistan, and four central Asian countries
- Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, as its members.
3) India slips in World Press Freedom Index, ranks 161
- India’s ranking in the 2023 World Press Freedom Index has slipped to 161 out of 180 countries, according to the latest report released by global media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
- In 2022, India was ranked at 150.
- Norway, Ireland and Denmark occupied the top three positions in press freedom, while Vietnam, China and North Korea constituted the bottom three.
4) Russian poet Maria Stepanova wins Leipzig Book Prize
- Maria Stepanova has been awarded the prestigious Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding in 2023.
- The Russian-Jewish author, whose novel In Memory of Memory explores Stalinism and the fall of the Soviet Union, was nominated for the Booker Prize in 2021.
- She was honored in Leipzig for her volume of poetry, Girls Without Clothes.
5) Cristiano Ronaldo tops Forbes’ 2023 highest-paid athletes list
- Cristiano Ronaldo has become the worl highest-paid athlete.
- Ronaldo’s annual playing salary went up to an estimated $75 mn.
- Messi is next on the list after bringing home a combined $130 mn while club team mate and France captain Mbappe is at 3rd.
- Los Angeles Lakers player and NBA great LeBron James ($119.5 mn) and Mexican boxer Canelo Alvarez ($110 mn) rounded out the top five.
6) Luca Brecel wins World Snooker Championship
- Luca Brecel won his first World Snooker Championship, in May 2023.
- He beat four-time champion Mark Selby 18-15.
- The World Snooker Championship is the longest-running and most prestigious tournament in professional snooker.
- First held in 1927, it is now one of the three tournaments that make up snooker’s Triple Crown Series.
7) Raju Kulkarni appointed chairman of selectors for Mumbai U-23 team
- Raju Kulkarni has been appointed chairman of selectors for the senior and Mumbai U-23 team.
- Raju represented the country in three Tests and 10 ODIs.
- Besides Kulkarni, the other members of the senior selection committee are Sanjay Patil, Ravi Thakkar, Jeetendra Thakeray and Kiran Powar, who has been an Apex Council member as an ICA representative previously.
8) HDFC Bank rolls out digital distribution platform for agents, partners
- HDFC Bank has introduced a Digital Distribution Platform to make it easier for its agents and business correspondents to sell services, especially in rural areas.
- HDFC Bank Smart Saathi provides a secure and user-friendly experience to its users.
- The newly launched feature will use advanced technology solutions to connect Business Correspondents (BCs) and Business Facilitators to the bank.
9) World Press Freedom Day: 3 May
- ‘World Press Freedom Day’ is observed annually on May 3 to raise awareness of the importance of press freedom.
- The day was established in 1993 by the UN General Assembly on the advice of the UNESCO General Conference.
- The theme for the 30th World Press Freedom Day 2023 is “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of Expression as a Driver for all other human rights.”
10) Vantika becomes 11th women to achieve International Master title
- Vantika Agrawal is the new India Women No.3 in Chess and the 11th Indian women to achieve International Master title.
- She has played 4 International tournaments previously where she has increased her FIDE rating by 61 points.
- She has also won a bronze medal in the National Women’s Championship held in Kohlapur in Jan 2023 and a gold medal for the Airport Authority of India in Feb 2023.
