1) Starbucks names Indian-origin Laxman Narasimhan as new CEO

  • Popular international café chain Starbucks has named Indian-origin Laxman Narasimhan as its new Chief Executive Officer.
  • Narasimhan will join Starbucks on 1 October 2022, replacing Howard Schultz, who will continue as interim chief until April 2023.
  • Earlier, Narasimhan served as chief executive of Reckitt Benckiser.
  • US-based Starbucks is the world’s largest coffeehouse chain.

2) Uttarakhand education dept launches e-governance portal ‘Samarth’

  • The Uttarakhand education department launched an e-governance portal – “Samarth” in August 2022.
  • It will provide all administrative & educational updates including information about entrance exams & appointments from 5 state universities & 140 public schools.
  • It has been launched to make the education system more transparent in the state.

3) PM commissions India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant

  • PM Modi commissioned the first indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant on 2 September 2022 at Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kochi.
  • He also unveiled the new Naval Ensign (Nishaan).
  • Naval Ensigns are flags that naval ships or formations bear to denote nationality.
  • The current Indian Naval Ensign consists of a St. George’s Cross — a red cross with white background.

 

4) Rajasthan Govt launches ‘Mahila Nidhi’ – a credit scheme for women

  • Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot has launched a women-only loan scheme ‘Mahila Nidhi’
  • It has been launched to ensure the availability of credit to women for starting new businesses.
  • The scheme will disburse loans of up to Rs 40,000 within 48 hours, and above Rs 40,000 within 15 days.
  • After Telangana, Rajasthan has become the second state in the country to establish the Mahila Nidhi scheme.

 

5) IndusInd Bank, ADB join hands to support supply chain financing

  • IndusInd Bank signed a strategic partnership with Asian Development Bank (ADB) to support and promote supply chain finance solutions in India.
  • The Bank has entered into a partial guarantee programme with ADB with an initial outlay of $70 million (Rs 560 crore), for promoting supply chain finance solutions in India.

6) India overtakes UK to become world’s fifth biggest economy

  • India leaped past the UK in the final three months of 2021 to become the fifth-biggest economy, according to a report by Bloomberg.
  • The ranking is based on GDP figures compiled by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
  • India is behind just the US, China, Japan and Germany.
  • India’s economy is projected to grow at 7% in 2022-23.
  • India registered a growth of 8.7 per cent in 2021-22.

 

7) Agrarian festival ‘Nuakhai’ celebrated in Odisha

  • Nuakhai is an agricultural festival mainly observed by the people of Odisha.
  • The festival is observed to welcome the new season of rice.
  • Nuakhai is a combination of two words that signifies the eating of new rice, ‘Nua’ means new and ‘khai’ means to eat.
  • It is observed the day after the Ganesh Chaturthi festival & in 2022 it was observed on 1 September 2022.

  • Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be on a four-day visit to India from 5 September 2022.
  • She will hold bilateral consultations with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • She had, earlier, visited India in October, 2019.
  • While, from India’s side, former Indian President Ram Nath Kovind and PM Narendra Modi had visited Bangladesh between March and December 2021.

 

10) UGC Chairman Jagadesh Kumar appointed as AICTE’S interim head

  • University Grants Commission, UGC Chairman Jagadesh Kumar has been appointed as the interim head of the All India Council For Technical Education, AICTE.
  • The current chairperson Anil Sahasrabudhe retired on September 1, 2022.
  • M Jagadesh Kumar was appointed as UGC Chairman on February 4, 2022.
  • He earlier held the post of Vice Chancellor of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

 

11) UIDAI tops Grievance Redressal Index in August 2022

  • The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has topped among all Ministries and Departments in resolving Public Grievances for the month of August 2022.
  • UIDAI, which oversees Aadhaar, has been a top performer in the resolution of cases received through the Centralized Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS).

12) Know About: All India Football Federation

  • The All India Football Federation is the governing body of football in India under jurisdiction of Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
  • Formed in 1935 at Darbhanga, the federation was one of the founding members of the Asian Football Confederation.
  • It is headquartered in New Delhi.
  • It is also part of the South Asian Football Federation, the organization that runs football in South Asia.
