1) Mathematician Ruixiang Zhang to receive 2023 Sastra Ramanujan Prize
- Ruixiang Zhang, Assistant Professor, University of California, Berkeley, USA will be awarded with the 2023 SASTRA Ramanujan Prize for his outstanding contributions in mathematics.
- The annual cash prize of USD 10,000 will be given at an international conference in Number Theory during December 20 and December 22 at SASTRA University in Kumbakonam, mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan’s hometown.
2) World’s second malaria vaccine gets WHO approval
- Serum Institute of India said the WHO has approved a malaria vaccine, paving the way for the global roll-out of the world’s second such vaccine.
- The recommendation is based on pre-clinical and clinical trial data which showed good safety and high efficacy in four countries, at sites with both seasonal and perennial malaria transmission.
3) Katalin Kariko, Drew Weissman Get Nobel Prize For Medicine
- Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman won the Nobel Medicine Prize for work on messenger RNA technology that paved the way for groundbreaking Covid-19 vaccines.
- mRNA technology is now being used to develop other treatments for diseases and illnesses such as cancer, influenza and heart failure.
- The pair will receive their Nobel prize, consisting of a diploma, a gold medal and a $1 million cheque
4) No clear national emblem, Isro logo imprints show lunar soil ‘lumpy’
- The Chandrayaan-3 rover Pragyan, whose rear wheels are embossed with the Indian national emblem and the Isro logo on the lunar soil, has been unable to leave a “clear” imprint of the two.
- It is a good sign as it gives a new understanding of the properties of the lunar soil in the south pole region.
5) Avinash Sable wins gold in men’s 3000m steeplechase
- India’s Avinash Sable won the gold medal in the men’s 3000m steeplechase at the Hangzhou Asian Games on Sunday.
- He took top honours with a timing of 8:19:50s, breaking the Games record along the way.
- Sable’s medal is India’s 12th gold at this edition of the Asian Games and the first track and field gold in Hangzhou.
6) National Zoological Park begins celebration of 69th Wildlife Week
- National Zoological Park kick-started the celebration of 69th Wildlife Week with the theme “Partnerships for wildlife conservation”.
- Wildlife Week is celebrated every year to coincide with the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
- The activities planned for the week at National Zoological Park aim at using inclusive and collective participation for the conservation cause.
7) Aditi Ashok Clinches Historic Silver In Individual Golf Event
- India’s star golfer Aditi Ashok created history by clinching a first-ever medal in the women’s individual event at the ongoing 19th Asian Games on Sunday.
- Aditi won a silver medal with -17 at Par. Indian women’s golfers had never won a medal in Asian Games’ history before.
- India has only two individual gold medals in golf by Lakshman Singh (1982) and Shiv Kapur (2002).
8) ‘Har Ghar Solar’ campaign in Lucknow and Varanasi
- The state government of Uttar Pradesh will launch a month-long ‘Har Ghar Solar’ campaign in Lucknow and Varanasi to promote the use of renewable energy through the installation of solar rooftops.
- The government aims to generate 6,000 MW of solar power through rooftops under the Solar Policy, 2022.
- Lucknow and Varanasi are among the 18 cities being developed as solar cities in UP.
9) India win gold in Trap men’s team event
- The Indian men’s team comprising of Darius Chenai, Zoravar Singh Sandhu and Prithviraj Tondaiman has claimed gold in the Trap event.
- This was India’s 21st medal in shooting at the Asian Games 2023.
- India was able to fend off competition from Kuwait and China to secure the top spot on the podium to take the tally in shooting to 21 medals with 7 gold, 9 silver and 5 bronze.
10) Tajinderpal Singh Toor wins Gold in Shotput
- India’s Tajinderpal Singh Toor defended his Asian Games crown by clinching a gold medal in Shotput in the ongoing Hangzhou Games
- Toor secured his place in Indian sports history by becoming the fourth Indian shot putter ever to successfully defend his Asian Games title
- Toor followed in the footsteps of Parduman Singh Brar, Joginder Singh, and Bahadur Singh Chouhan to join this elite company
11) Indian-origin Pereira wins Singapore’s 1st athletics Asian Games Gold
- Shanti Pereira, who won Singapore’s first Asian Games athletics gold medal for almost 50 years in the women’s 200m final in Hangzhou, has an Indian connection.
- Shanti’s father Clarence Pereira is a descendant of a family based in Pala in Kottayam who migrated to Singapore. Her mother is from Singapore.
- Earlier, Shanti had won a silver in the 100m final.
