1954: India’s highest civilian awards, the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan were established.

1757: British troops captured the Indian city of Calcutta.

1973: General S. F. A. J. Manik Shaw was made field marshal.

1819: The Panic of 1819, the first major financial crisis began in the United States.

1839: French photographer Louis Daguerre displayed the first photo of the moon.

 

1) DRDO celebrated its 66th Foundation Day on 1st January

  • DRDO Chairman Dr Samir V Kamat paid floral tributes to the Missile Man of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam on this occasion.
  • It was formed in 1st January 1958, by the merger of the Technical Development Establishment and the Directorate of Technical Development and Production of the Indian Ordnance Factories with the Defence Science Organisation under the administration of Jawaharlal Nehru.

 

2) Professor B R Kamboj honoured with M S Swaminathan Award

  • Vice Chancellor of Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Prof. B.R. Kamboj, received the prestigious M.S. Swaminathan Award for his exceptional contributions to agronomy.
  • The award ceremony took place at the International Conference on ‘One Health One World, held at Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Agricultural University at Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh.

 

3) PM inaugurated multiple development projects in Tiruchirappalli, TN

  • PM modi laid the foundation stone of development projects worth more than Rs 20,000 crores in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu.
  • New Terminal Building inaugurated at Tiruchirappalli International Airport, alongside key rail, road, and shipping projects in Tamil Nadu.
  • Indigenous Fast Reactor Fuel Reprocessing Plant and General Cargo Berth-ll of Kamarajar Port were commissioned.

 

4) Hatee tribe of Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh received ST status

  • The Hatee community in Trans-Giri, Sirmaur district, has been granted Scheduled Tribe status by the Himachal Pradesh government.
  • After clarifications from the Centre and cabinet approval, the notification was issued and will be personally announced by the Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister.
  • The Lok Sabha passed the inclusion of Hatee community in the list of Scheduled Tribes in December 2022

 

5) Russia took over the 2024 BRICS chairmanship

  • Russia assumed 2024 BRICS chairmanship with a focus on global development, security, & expansion, welcoming Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and UAE into the group.
  • Key domains for the BRICS partnership include political and security cooperation, economic, and cultural exchanges.
  • Putin emphasized Russia’s intention to explore inclusion of a new category of partner countries within BRICS.
