Qila Aur Kahaniya: Junagarh Fort

  • It is a fort located in the city of Bikaner, Rajasthan.
  • The fort was originally called Chintamani and was renamed Junagadh or “Old Fort” in the early 20th century when the ruling family moved to the Lalgarh Palace outside the fort limits.
  • It was built in the reign of Raja Rai Singh, the sixth ruler of Bikaner, who ruled from 1571 to 1611 AD.
  • The construction was completed in 1594.

 

1) Green Warriors: Devender Sura: The Tree Man of Haryana

  • Devender Sura, a Haryana Police constable and father, has planted 30-40k trees annually since 2011 with his team “Paryavaran Mitra.”
  • Spending his salary and taking loans, he runs “Janata Nursery” for free sapling distribution and launched “OXYGEN BAAG” during Covid-19 to build an oxygen-friendly ecosystem in Haryana, treating trees as his children.

 

2) Rajya Sabha passes Mediation Bill, 2021

  • Rajya Sabha on Tuesday passed the Mediation Bill, 2021, which halves the maximum time for completing mediation proceedings to 180 days.
  • The bill was passed with a voice vote.
  • The bill makes the process a time-bound mechanism which saves time and money for parties.
  • The bill also makes pre-litigation mediation voluntary instead of mandatory.

 

3) UP govt approves Water Tourism and Adventure Sports Policy 2023

  • The Uttar Pradesh govt has approved the UP Water Tourism and Adventure Sports Policy 2023 for 10 years.
  • The policy will be applicable to all inland land-based, air-based and water routes, dams, reservoirs, lakes, rivers, ponds and all adventure activities carried out in Uttar Pradesh.
  • The nodal agency will create adventure sports units at the divisional level for action under this policy.

 

4) India records highest ODI opening partnership in West Indies

  • India, on 1 August 2023, recorded their highest opening partnership in an ODI cricket against West Indies.
  • Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan set the record by scoring a 143-run stand in the third ODI against West Indies in Tarouba.
  • The previous record (132 runs) was set by Shikhar Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane in an ODI against West Indies in Port of Spain in 2017.

 

5) Maj Gen Amita Rani appointed additional DG of Military Nurse Service

  • Maj Gen Amita Rani assumed the appointment of Addl Director General, Military Nursing Service (MNS) on 01 Aug 2023.
  • She is an alumnus of the College of Nursing, Army Hospital (R&R), Delhi.
  • She was commissioned into the Military Nursing Service in the year 1983.
  • She has a Six Sigma Green Belt in Health care, and Quality Management from the National Health Care Academy, Singapore.

 

6) Govt launches National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR)

  • The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has launched the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR) scheme under The Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA).
  • NAPDDR provides financial assistance to state governments/UT administrations, NGOS/VOS, and addiction treatment facilities in government hospitals.
  • NMBA was launched in 2020 to spread awareness about substance use.

 

7) Dr Jitendra launches India’s first indigenously developed MRI Scanner

  • Union Minister of State Science & Technology Dr Jitendra Singh launched India’s first Indigenously developed, High Field (1.5 Tesla), Next Generation Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Scanner in New Delhi.
  • Voxelgrids Innovations Pvt Ltd has developed the MRI scanner under the National Biopharma Mission.
  • The annual demand for MRI scanners in India is expected to more than double by 2030.

 

8) NHPC & ALIMCO sign MoU for providing assistive devices to Divyangjans

  • NHPC Limited and Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO) have signed an MOU for providing assistive devices to Divyangjans.
  • Under the MoU, NHPC will distribute aids and assistive devices to around 1,000 Divyangjans in the vicinity of NHPC Projects located in the North and North Eastern states.
  • The initiative aims to promote social inclusivity of the differently-abled.

 

9) National Mission for Clean Ganga Approves 7 Projects Worth Rs. 692 Cr

  • The 50th meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) was held under the chairmanship of DG, NMCG, Shri G. Asok Kumar.
  • 7 projects worth around Rs. 692 crore were approved in the meeting.
  • Out of the 7 projects, four pertain to sewage management in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
  • The project aims to develop the freshwater resources and its biodiversity in India.

 

10) GST collection rises 11% to Rs 1.65 lakh crore in July 2023

  • The gross goods and services tax (GST) collection for the month of July 2023, stands at Rs 1.65 lakh crore, according to the Ministry of Finance.
  • The revenues for the month of July are 11 per cent higher than the GST revenues in the same month in 2022.
  • This is the fifth time since inception that GST collection crossed the Rs 1.6 lakh crore mark.

 

11) Record 6.77 crore income tax returns filed till July 31

  • The Income Tax Department announced that 6.77 crore income tax returns were filed until July 31, 2023.
  • This figure includes 53.67 lakh first-time filers, indicating a widening of the tax base.
  • The total number of ITRS filed for AY 2023-24 is 16.1% more than the total ITRS filed for AY 2022-23.
  • The filing of ITRS peaked on July 31, 2023, with over 64.33 lakh ITRS being filed on a single day.

 

12) Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar takes over as the Flag Officer of ENC

  • Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar has taken charge as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command.
  • He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and has a Master’s Degree in Defence and Strategic Studies.
  • He is an Anti-Submarine Warfare specialist.
  • He is a recipient of the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal for distinguished service.

 

13) PM Modi announces ‘Meri Mati Mera Desh’ campaign

  • PM Modi announced ‘Meri Mati Mera Desh’ campaign to honour martyred bravehearts in the run-up to Independence Day.
  • The campaign will include programmes across India to remember those who laid down their lives for the country.
  • Special inscriptions will be installed in lakhs of village panchayats of the country in memory of these personalities.

 

14) India Post to sell National Flag through its 1.6 lakh post offices

  • India Post to sell National Flag through its 1.6 lakh post offices to celebrate Har Ghar Tiranga.
  • The govt is organizing the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign between 13-15 August 2023.
  • The campaign will leverage the vast physical network of 1.6 lakh post offices in the country.
  • Flags will be sold through all post offices and the ePostOffice facility.

 

15) PM lays foundation stone and inaugurates various projects in Pune

  • PM Narendra Modi inaugurated completed sections of the Pune Metro.
  • He also handed over more than 1280 houses constructed under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana by Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) and more than 2650 Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) houses constructed by Pune Municipal Corporation to the beneficiaries.
  • He also inaugurated a Waste to Energy Plant under PCMC.

 

16) China activates world’s largest Wind Turbine with 16 MW capacity

  • China recently operationalised the world’s most powerful wind turbine, which can reportedly power 36,000 households for a year.
  • The 16-megawatt turbine, MySE-16-260, is located at an offshore wind farm near Fujian province.
  • The turbine is also the world’s largest . and is taller than a 67-storey building.
  • It has rotor blades with diameters spanning twice the length of a football field.

 

17) UNESCO recommends adding Venice to ‘heritage danger list’

  • UNESCO has recommended adding Venice to its ‘heritage danger list’.
  • Climate change is a major problem in Venice and is causing damage to the city’s historic structures.
  • Venice is facing weather-related problems such as droughts and flooding in recent years.
  • The 45th session of UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee is scheduled to be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in September 2023.
