1) Taiwan unveils first domestically made submarine to counter China
- Taiwan has launched its first domestically-produced submarine, the Narwhal, to counter China’s threat.
- The new submarine is equipped with U.S.-made Mark 48 heavyweight torpedoes, making any plans for an attack on Taiwan more uncertain.
- The goal is for Taiwan to have at least four submarines active in service by 2027, after adding one more to the existing fleet.
2) Michael Gambon, Dumbledore actor in ‘Harry Potter,’ passes away
- Sir Michael Gambon, who played Professor Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films, passed away.
- He was a renowned actor who won four Bafta awards and was knighted for his services to the entertainment industry.
- Gambon had a five-decade career in TV, film, theatre, and radio, and was also known for his role in The Singing Detective.
3) Dharmendra Pradhan launches CRIIIO 4 GOOD modules to empower youth
- Union Minister for Education and Skill Development Dharmendra Pradhan launched ‘CRIIIO 4 GOOD’ to promote gender equality among girls and boys.
- The program was launched in association with the International Cricket Council, UNICEF, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
- It is a series of 8 cricket-based animation films to promote gender parity and equip girls with life skills.
4) RBI imposes penalty on three Co-operative Banks
- The Reserve Bank has imposed monetary penalties on three cooperative banks for regulatory compliance deficiencies.
- Saraswat Co-operative Bank was fined for contravening the provisions of RBI directions.
- Bassein Catholic Co-operative Bank faced a monetary penalty for granting unsecured loans to its director.
- Rajkot Nagarik Sahakari Bank was fined for non-compliance with RBI directions.
5) IAF inducts first Dornier Do-228 aircraft manufactured by HAL
- The Indian Air Force has received the first of six state-of-the-art Dornier Do-228 aircraft, manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.
- The Ministry of Defence inked a deal with HAL for the procurement of six aircraft, allocating a budget of Rs 667 crore.
- The aircraft is versatile and designed to fulfill various needs, from utility and commuter transport to maritime surveillance.
6) India retains top spot among EMs for 6th straight month; China second
- Mint’s Emerging Markets (EMs) Tracker provides a summary of economic activity based on seven high-frequency indicators.
- With a composite score of 73, India topped the Emerging Markets (EMs) league table in August.
- China and Mexico were second and third, respectively.
- India topped the league table for the sixth straight month with the highest real GDP growth in the June quarter
7) Uttarakhand signs MoUs worth Rs 4800 crore with businesses in London
- Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami signed investment MoUs worth ₹ 4800 crore with different companies during the Global Investors Summit in London.
- Kayan Jet signed two MoUs worth ₹ 380 crore for a skiing resort and cable car project.
- Usha Breco signed investment agreements totaling ₹ 100 crore for ropeway development projects.
8) India slips 4 spots to 56th position in 2023 World Talent Ranking: IMD
- India has slipped four spots to 56th position in the 2023 World Talent Ranking, according to the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) release.
- India fares reasonably well in future readiness, ranking 29th.
- Switzerland ranked on top in the IMD World Talent Ranking 2023, while Luxembourg was in second place, followed by Iceland, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
9) Tata Steel inks pact with IOCL to further reduce carbon footprint
- Tata Steel has signed an agreement with Indian Oil Corporation Limited to further reduce its carbon footprint.
- IOCL will install LPG facilities at the company’s Ferro Alloys Plants in Gopalpur of Ganjam districts in Odisha.
- Tata Steel has decided to transition from Furnace Oil and High-Speed Diesel to a more sustainable fuel option – liquid petroleum Gas (LPG) to reduce carbon emissions.
10) Cognizant appoints former Wipro finance chief Jatin Dalal as CFO
- Cognizant Technology Solutions appoints Jatin Dalal as its new CFO.
- Jan Siegmund, the current CFO of Cognizant, will retire in early 2024, with Dalal taking over the role in December 2023.
- Dalal had a successful tenure at Wipro, serving as president and CFO for over two decades.
- Under Dalal’s leadership, Wipro experienced significant growth, with shares rising by 57% and 85% in 2020 & 2021.
11) Google introduces earthquake alerts for Android in India
- Search giant Google has unveiled its Earthquake Alerts System for Android smartphone users in India.
- It was developed in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the National Seismology Center (NSC). t
- The Earthquake Alerts System offers early warnings of seismic activities and is available in multiple Indian languages.
12) DOT and NDMA collaborate to enhance emergency communication
- The Department of Telecommunications and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) will be conducting comprehensive testing of the Cell Broadcast Alert System to bolster emergency communication during disasters.
- The Cell Broadcast Alert System enables the dissemination of critical messages to all mobile devices.
- The initiative aims to prioritize the safety of citizens.
13) Asian Games 2022: Palak wins Gold, Esha Singh bags Silver
- Shooters Palak and Esha Singh clinched Gold and Silver, respectively at the 10m Air Pistol Women’s final event .
- Palak brought 6th Gold for India in shooting and the nation now has a total of eight Gold medals at the Hangzhou Games.
- Palak also broke the Asian Games record with a score of 242.1.
14) World Heart Day: 29 September
- World Heart Day is observed on 29th September every year to raise awareness about cardiovascular diseases.
- Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally and can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle.
- The theme for World Heart Day 2023 is ‘Use Heart, Know Heart’.
- The day was first observed in the year 2000 and is celebrated in over 100 countries.
15) Asian Games 2022, Shooting: India win Gold medal in Men’s 50m Rifle 3P
- The Indian team secured the gold medal with a score of 1769 in the men’s 5 rifle 3 positions event, featuring Aishwarya Pratap Singh Tomar, Swapnil Kusale, and Akhil Sheoran.
- India achieved a remarkable score of 1769, surpassing the USA’s previous record set in Peru last year.
- China secured silver medal with a score of 1763, while Republic of Korea earned bronze with a score of 1748.
16) Manipur government extends AFSPA in hill districts for 6 months
- The Manipur govt has extended the imposition of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) for an additional six months in the entire state, except for specific areas within the Imphal Valley.
- AFSPA has been in force in Manipur since 1981 and even earlier in Naga-dominated areas since 1958.
- AFSPA grants extensive powers to the armed forces and Central security forces in “disturbed areas.”
17) India’s external debt rises to $629.1 billion at end-June 2023
- India’s external debt rose marginally to USD 629.1 billion at June-end 2023, according to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
- The external debt increased by USD 4.7 billion over USD 624.3 billion in end-March 2023.
- The debt-GDP ratio declined to 18.6% at end-June 2023 from 18.8% at end-March 2023.
- Loans remained the largest component of India’s external debt, with a share of 32.9%.
