1) Lok Sabha passes National Nursing and Midwifery bill

  • The Lok Sabha has passed two bills – the National Nursing Commission Bill and the National Dental Commission Bill.
  • The bill aims to streamline nursing education in India.
  • The bill will set up the National Nursing and Midwifery Commission (NNMC) and repeal the Indian Nursing Council Act, of 1947.
  • The National Dental Commission Bill seeks to regulate the profession of dentistry in India.

 

2) NASA, DARPA select Lockheed Martin to develop nuclear rocket engine

  • Lockheed Martin has won a contract to build a nuclear thermal rocket engine that could speed up space travel.
  • NASA and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) have issued the contract, which requires Lockheed Martin to first fly the engine by 2027.
  • A nuclear-powered rocket would enable faster trips to Mars, making missions less complex and safer for the crew.

 

3) UK Professor Jim Skea elected Chair of the IPCC

  • Jim Skea of the United Kingdom was elected chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in Nairobi.
  • The IPCC is one of the most important bodies tackling climate change.
  • The World Meteorological Organization & the United Nations Environment Programme established the IPCC in 1988.
  • IPCC’s job is to advance scientific knowledge about climate change caused by human activities.

 

4) Goa Shipyard, BITS join hands to use Al in shipbuilding

  • Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) and BITS Goa have partnered to develop and implement Al technologies in the shipbuilding and defence industry.
  • The MoU aims to enhance operational efficiency, optimize ship design processes, and strengthen defence capabilities.
  • The partnership is committed to fostering innovation and progress in the shipbuilding and defence sector.

 

5) Razorpay launches MoneySaver Export Account for Indian customers

  • Razorpay has launched a smart account, MoneySaver Export Account, for Indian exporters to receive payments locally via bank transfers on the Razorpay platform.
  • The account allows exporters to receive international bank transfers from 160 countries, and it is free from any hidden charges.
  • The account can be opened and accessed via the Razorpay dashboard without any additional paperwork.

 

6) LIC introduces new term assurance plan “Jeevan Kiran”

  • Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) introduced a new term assurance plan “Jeevan Kiran”.
  • LIC Jeevan Kiran is an individual, savings, and life Insurance plan.
  • It offers life cover with the return of premium and has a minimum sum assured of 15 lakh.
  • The policy term varies from 10 years to 40 years.
  • Premium payment can be made by way of a single premium or by way of a regular premium.

 

7) Sebi rolls out framework for corporate debt market development fund

  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has created a framework for the Corporate Debt Market Development Fund (CDMDF) to develop the corporate debt market.
  • Mutual funds will have to contribute 25 basis points (bps) of the specified debt asset under management to the fund.
  • The CDMDF will purchase corporate bonds from fund houses in distress to help them meet redemption requests.

 

8) Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI)

  • The SEBI is the regulatory body for the securities and commodity market in India under the ownership of the Ministry of Finance within the Government of India.
  • It was established on 12 April 1988 as an executive body and was given statutory powers on 30 Jan 1992 through the SEBI Act, 1992.
  • Madhabi Puri Buch took charge of chairman on 1 March 2022, replacing Ajay Tyagi.

9) India, Laos hold third Foreign Office Consultations in Vientiane

  • The third India-Laos Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) took place in Vientiane.
  • The FOC was co-chaired by Saurabh Kumar and Phoxay Khaykhamphithoune.
  • Discussions included development cooperation, trade, defence, agriculture, and global issues of interest.
  • The 2nd Foreign Office Consultation was held in New Delhi on 10 August 2015.
  • Laos is a part of India’s extended neighbourhood.

 

10) India signs MoU with Papua New Guinea on sharing INDIA STACK

  • India and the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) of Papua New Guinea signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on sharing INDIA STACK.
  • It was signed during the first Global Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) Summit organised by the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) on June 12-13, 2023 in Pune, Maharashtra.

12) India & Malaysia hold a meeting on Military Cooperation in New Delhi

  • The 10th meeting of the Sub Committee on Military Cooperation between India and Malaysia was held in New Delhi on July 27, 2023.
  • During the meeting, the existing defence cooperation between the two countries was reviewed and wide-ranging discussions were held on issues of mutual interest.
  • Both sides explored practical initiatives to further expand the bilateral defence engagements.

 

13) PM to inaugurate Akhil Bhartiya Shiksha Samagam in New Delhi

  • PM Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Akhil Bharatiya Shiksha Samagam on 29th July 2023 at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati
  • Maidan in Delhi.
  • These schools will nurture students in a way that they become engaged, productive, and plural in society as envisaged by National Education Policy 2020.
  • The PM will also release education and skill curriculum books translated into 12 Indian languages.

 

14) US announces $345 million military aid package for Taiwan

  • The U.S. has announced $345 million in military aid for Taiwan, which includes defense, education, and training.
  • The package includes man-portable air defence systems, intelligence and surveillance capabilities, firearms, and missiles.
  • The package is aimed at helping Taiwan counter China and deterring China from considering attacking.
  • Taiwan split from China in 1949 amid a civil war.

 

15) Stuart Broad becomes 1st British bowler to get 150 wickets in Ashes

  • Stuart Broad becomes the first England bowler to take 150 wickets in his Ashes career.
  • He achieved this during England’s 5th Ashes Test at The Oval.
  • Broad has taken 151 wickets in 40 Ashes matches with an average of 28.81.
  • He is the third-highest wicket-taker in Ashes history behind Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne.
  • In 167 Tests, Broad has taken 602 wickets with best figures of 8/15.
