1) 17th edition of Mumbai International Film Festival begins
- 17th edition of Mumbai International Film festival (MIFF) is being held from 29 May-4 June 2022 at Nehru Centre Auditorium, Worli, Mumbai.
- There will be screening of 119 Films in National and International Competition category and 264 films in the non-competition category.
- In commemoration of Bangladesh’s 50 years of Independence, the country has been chosen as the ‘Country of Focus!
2) INS Gomati decommissioned after 34 years of service
- INS Gomati was decommissioned at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on 28 May 2022.
- INS Gomati derives her name from the river Gomti and was commissioned on 16 April 1988.
- It was also the oldest warrior of the Western Fleet when decommissioned.
- For its contribution to national maritime security, it was twice awarded the coveted Unit Citation once in 2007-08 and again in 2019-20.
3) Gujarat Titans wins Indian Premier League 2022
- Gujarat Titans won the 15th edition of the IPL on 29 May 2022, after defeating Rajasthan Royals by 7 wickets in the final in Ahmedabad.
- This was Gujarat Titans’ maiden IPL season.
- Hardik Pandya, captain of Gujarat Titans won the Man of the Match award while Rajasthan Royals’ Jos Buttler was named Most Valuable Player.
- Jos Buttler also won the Orange Cap for scoring 863 runs in the season.
4) Shaunak Sen’s ‘All That Breathes’ wins L’OEil d’Or award
- Filmmaker Shaunak Sen’s documentary “All That Breathes” has been honoured with the 2022 L’OEil d’Or award.
- The L’OEil d’Or documentary award, also known as The Golden Eye award, was created in 2015 by French-speaking authors’ society LaScam in collaboration with the Cannes Film Festival.
- The award includes a cash prize of 5,000 euros.
5) Chaudhary Charan Singh’s death anniversary: 29 May
- Chaudhary Charan Singh’s death anniversary is observed every year on May 29.
- He served as the 5th Prime Minister of India between 28 July 1979 and 14 January 1980.
- He was often referred to as the ‘champion of India’s peasants’ due to his contributions to raising several issues regarding farmers and their rights.
- His birth anniversary is observed as Kisan Diwas in India on 23 December.
6) Odisha CM inaugurates cyber security centre
- Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on 27 May 2022 inaugurated a Cyber Security Operation Centre in Bhubaneswar as part of efforts to protect government data.
- Claimed to be the first of its kind in the country, it has been set up by the state Electronics and IT Department, and Odisha Computer Application Centre.
- He also inaugurated a manufacturing unit of COVID-19 rapid antigen test kits.
7) Jharkhand to get WHO award for tobacco control
- Recognising its efforts in controlling tobacco consumption, the World Health Organization (WHO) has selected Jharkhand for the World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) Award-2022.
- State Tobacco Control Cell of the Health
- Department of Jharkhand will receive the award on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day in New Delhi on May 31 2022.
- National Tobacco Control Programme was launched in Jharkhand in 2012.
8) Karnataka’s Ramesh Budhial crowned as new national surfing champion
- Karnataka’s Ramesh Budhial defeated Tamil Nadu’s Ajeesh Ali at the Indian Open of Surfing on 28 May 2022 to be crowned as the national champion in the men’s open surf category.
- Sugar Banarse was crowned the national champion in the women’s open surf category.
- The competition was conducted by Surfing Federation of India
- The 3 day competition was held at Panambur Beach in Mangalore, Karnataka
9) NCTE launches online portal to simplify teaching recognition
- National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has launched an online portal to simplify the process of recognition of teacher education programs in higher education institutions.
- The applications for the recently launched 4 years Integrated Teacher Education Programmes will be processed on this portal.

10) IISc team develops enhanced data encryption, security device
- Indian Institute of Science team has developed a record-breaking true random number generator (TRNG).
- It can improve data encryption and provide improved security for sensitive digital data such as credit card details, passwords, and other personal information.
- The study describing this device has been published in the journal ‘ACS Nano!

11) ‘Triangle of Sadness’ wins Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or
- “Triangle of Sadness”, a film by Swedish director Ruben Ostlund, won the Palme d’Or for Best Picture at the Cannes Film Festival on 28 May 2022.
- The festival also named Korean star Song Kang Ho best actor for his performance in Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda’s film, Broker.
- Best actress went to Zar Amir Ebrahimi for her performance as a journalist in Ali Abbasi’s Holy Spider.
12) Japan’s MUFG Bank to open branch in GIFT City
- MUFG Bank on 26 May 2022 became the first Japanese bank to obtain approval for opening a branch at Gujarat International Financial Tec-City (GIFT City). This will be the bank’s sixth branch in India.
- At present, the bank has a presence in Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai and Neemrana.
- MUFG had opened its first branch in Mumbai in 1953.
13) PM to release benefits under PM CARES for Children Scheme on 30 May
- PM Modi will release benefits under the PM CARES for Children Scheme on 30 May 2022.
- A passbook of PM CARES for Children, and health card under Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana will be handed over to the children during the programme.
- PM CARES for Children Scheme was launched in 2021 to support children who have lost both. their parents to the Covid-19 pandemic.
14) International Day of UN Peacekeepers: 29 May
- The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers is celebrated on 29 May annually.
- It honours nearly 4,200 peacekeepers who had lost their lives serving under the UN flag since 1948.
- The first UN peacekeeping mission called the ‘UN Truce Supervision Organization’ began operations in Palestine on 29 May 1948.
- The theme for 2022 is “People Peace Progress: The Power of Partnerships”.
15) Punjabi writer Sultana Begum passes away
- Renowned Punjabi writer Sultana Begum passed away in May 2022.
- Her book ‘Shugufe’ became very popular.
- Begum, the first woman to write a literary satirein Punjabi language, was awarded the ‘Professor Joga Singh’ award and the ‘Waris di Dhi’ award by the Punjabi University.
- She also worked with the Punjab School Education Board, Mohali.
16) Archbishops of Goa and Hyderabad chosen as cardinals by Pope
- 2 Indian churchmen are among 21 who will be elevated by Pope Francis to the rank of cardinal in the ceremony at the Vatican in August 2022.
- The 2 Indians are Anthony Poola, the Archbishop of Hyderabad and Filipe Neri Antonio Sebastao di Rosario Ferrao, Archbishop of Goa and Daman.
- With the elevation of Anthony Poola, India has also got its first Dalit cardinal.
17) US surpasses China as India’s biggest trading partner
- The US has surpassed China to become India’s top trading partner in 2021-22.
- According to the data of the Commerce Ministry, in 2021-22, the bilateral trade between the US and India stood at USD 119.42 billion as against USD 80.51 billion in 2020-21.
- During 2021-22, India’s two-way commerce with China aggregated at USD 115.42 billion as compared to USD 86.4 billion in 2020-21.
18) Para-canoeist Prachi Yadav wins bronze in Paracanoe World Cup
- Para-canoeist Prachi Yadav on 29 May 2022, created history by becoming the first Indian to win a bronze medal in the women’s VL2 200m event at the Paracanoe World Cup at Poznan, Poland.
- Prachi bagged the bronze with a timing of 1:04.71 seconds behind silver medallist Brianna Hennessy of Canada (1:01.58s).
- It is India’s best-ever performance in the event which started on May 26, 2022.
19) Dr. Jitendra Singh inaugurates north India’s first Biotech Park
- Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh inaugurated north India’s first Industrial Biotech Park at Ghatti, Kathua, Jammu, on 28 May’22.
- The park would act as hub for incubation of new ideas and will act as a robust platform to support the agri-entrepreneurs, startups, progressive farmers, etc.
- It will carry out research on biodiversity, medicinal and aromatic plants of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
