1) Gokul Subramaniam appointed as Intel India president
- Gokul Subramaniam has been elevated to the post of Intel India president, responsible for engineering and design operations in India.
- Subramaniam is an alumnus of the University of Madras and the University of Texas and has been with Intel for over 11 years.
- Subramaniam’s appointment comes after Nivruti Rai resigned as the Intel India country head in June 2023.
2) IISc Bangalore tops 91 Indian universities in Times World Ranking 2024
- Indian Institute of Science (IISc) emerged as the top Indian university in the Times Higher Education’s (THE) World University Rankings 2024.
- Indian universities have performed well in the World University Rankings 2024, with 91 universities securing spots, surpassing last year’s count of 75.
- The University of Oxford has secured the top position in the rankings for the 8th consecutive year.
3) Ministry of Tourism organised the Global Launch of ‘Travel for LiFE’
- The Ministry of Tourism launched the Travel for LiFE program in partnership with UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
- It aims to promote sustainable tourism by encouraging tourists to take simple actions for the conservation of the environment.
- It has two verticals: Travel for LiFE for Cleanliness and Travel for LiFE for Rural Tourism.
4) PM Modi lays foundation stone of FM relay station at Dahod
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the foundation stone for Akashvani Dahod FM Relay Station Project in Gujarat.
- The FM Relay Station will cover approximately a 55 km radius area, encompassing approximately 75% of the tribal district of Dahod.
- The transmitter will partially cover the neighbouring tribal districts of Madhya Pradesh, including Alirajpur and Jhabua.
5) Indian elderly to make up 20% of population by 2050: UNFPA report
- India’s elderly population is projected to double to over 20% of the total population by 2050, according to the United Nations Population Fund, India (UNFPA) 2023 report.
- Over 40% of India’s elderly are in the poorest wealth quintile, which may affect their quality of life and healthcare utilization.
- Women have higher life expectancy at ages 60 and 80 compared to men.
6) Asian Games 2022: Roshibina Devi Naorem clinches Silver medal in Wushu
- In Asian Games at Hangzhou, India’s Roshibina Devi Naorem clinches Silver medal in Women’s 60 kg category in Wushu.
- Devi brings home a silver medal, which is a first for the country in Wushu.
- In last Asian games, she had bagged bronze medal.
7) India’s 6G vision accepted by UN Body ITU’s Study Group
- India’s vision to have ubiquitous coverage under 6G technology has been accepted by the UN body, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU’s) Study Group in its meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland.
- It is expected to reduce the cost of deployment of the next-generation technology.
- ITU is responsible for developing international mobile telecommunication standards.
8) Odisha assembly passes land acquisition bill
- The Odisha assembly has passed four bills, including the land acquisition and resettlement one that will enable the govt to exempt development projects from social impact assessments.
- The bill is named ‘Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Odisha Amendment) Bill, 2023’.
- It was first introduced in the assembly in March 2023.
9) Bhagat Singh’s birth anniversary: 28 September
- Bhagat Singh was born on September 28, 1907, in Punjab, India.
- He was a revolutionary socialist who fought British colonial rule.
- He was one of the founding members of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA).
- In 1928, Bhagat Singh and his associates were arrested for the murder of a British police officer.
- He was executed by hanging on March 23, 1931, at the age of 23.
10) Dr Jitendra Singh launches Capacity Building Plan for Govt employees
- Dr Jitendra Singh launched the Capacity Building Plan for Government employees, focusing on training and rationalizing deployment of officers and staff.
- The Karmayogi Prarambh module has been implemented for new recruits, aiming to enhance their skills and competencies.
- The CBP offers iGOT training modules for Govt employees at all levels, with a focus on functional and behavioral skills.
11) Union govt signs 8 MoUs with IBM on digital skilling of youths
- The signing of 8 MoUs between agencies of Ministries of Education and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and IBM took place on 28 September 2023.
- The partnership will focus on skilling learners across school education, higher education, and vocational skills.
- The program will provide access to digital content, experiential learning, and fresh skills.
12) Yes Bank appoints Manish Jain as country head of Wholesale Banking
- Yes Bank announces Manish Jain as the Country’s Head-Wholesale Banking with immediate effect.
- Jain will be responsible for spearheading the wholesale banking business at Yes Bank.
- Jain has three decades of work experience which includes 23 years in Standard Chartered Bank.
- Pankaj Sharma has been appointed as Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer at Yes Bank.
13) Churchill’s Old War Office launched as luxury hotel by Hinduja Group
- The Old War Office in London has been transformed into a luxury hotel by the Hinduja Group and Raffles Hotels & Resorts.
- The opening ceremony was attended by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Princess Anne.
- Princess Anne, the sister of King Charles III officially unveiled the plaque for The OWO.
- In 1931, Winston Churchill had famously described Mahatma Gandhi as a “half naked fakir.”
14) Asian Games 2022: India win gold in Men’s 10m Air Pistol Team event
- India won gold in the Men’s 10m Air Pistol Team event by securing a total score of 1734.
- The Indian trio of Sarabjot Singh, Shiva Narwal, and Arjun Singh Cheema defeated China for the team gold by a single point.
- Vietnam put up a strong showing and claimed the bronze medal with a total score of 1730.
15) Media Research Users Council India elects Shailesh Gupta as Chairman
- Shailesh Gupta and Shashank Srivastava have been elected as chairman and vice chairman of Media Research Users Council India, respectively.
- The new appointees replace Shashidhar Sinha, CEO of Mediabrands.
- Rajeev Beotra and Anupriya Acharya have been appointed new members of the Board of Governors.
- Media Research Users Council India was founded in 1994.
16) Green Ammonia Imported through VOC Port, Tamil Nadu for the first time
- Green Ammonia was imported through the V.O. Chidambaranar Port for the first time on September 23, 2023.
- Conventionally, Grey Ammonia is utilized for soda ash production. As a Go Green initiative, TFL has imported Green ammonia to produce Green soda Ash, on a trial basis.
- O. Chidambaranar Port Authority has also set a new record by handling 2,01,204 MT in a single day on September 24.
