1) Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s death anniversary: 27 May

  • Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s death anniversary is observed on 27 May every year.
  • He was the first Prime Minister of India and was also the longest-serving PM of the country.
  • He remained in office for about 17 years, from 1947 till he died at the age of 74 on May 27, 1964.
  • Between 1920 and 1922, he was imprisoned twice in connection with the Non-Cooperation Movement launched by Mahatma Gandhi.

 

2) Indian officer Anwar Hussain Shaik is new chair of WTO committee

  • Indian Government Officer Anwar Hussain Shaik has been made the chair of the World Trade Organisation’s Committee on Technical Barriers on Trade.
  • Shaik will take this role from Elisa Maria Olmeda de Alejandro from Mexico.
  • The World Trade Organization (WTO) is an intergovernmental organization that regulates and facilitates international trade. India is a member of WTO since 1995.

 

3) RBI imposes Rs 45 lakh penalty on MUFG Bank

  • RBI on May 27, 2022, imposed a penalty of Rs 45 lakh on Japan-based MUFG Bank for non-compliance with the directions on ‘time-bound implementation and strengthening of SWIFT-related operational controls!
  • MUFG Bank is the largest bank in Japan. It was established on January 1, 2006. It is one of the three so-called Japanese “megabanks”

4) DSEU signs pact with Delhi Prisons Department

  • The Delhi Skill and Entrepreneurship University has signed a pact with Delhi Prisons Department.
  • It has been signed for training and skill enhancement of prison inmates to support their long-term rehabilitation.
  • DSEU will offer different courses at Tihar Jail and award certificates upon successful completion of the program to inmates that will help them getting employed after their release.

 

5) PM Narendra Modi inaugurates Bharat Drone Mahotsav 2022

  • PM Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s biggest Drone Festival – Bharat Drone Mahotsav-2022 in New Delhi, on 27 May 2022.
  • The eventwill also witness a virtual award of drone pilot certificates, panel discussions, product launches, display of a ‘Made in India’ Drone Taxi prototype, flying demonstrations, among others.
  • It is a 2-day event being held from 27 to 28 May 2022.

 

6) Union Minister Anupriya Patel launches Indian Business Portal

  • Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Anupriya Patel launched the Indian Business Portal in New Delhi on May 27, 2022.
  • This portal will serve as an international trade hub for Indian exporters and foreign buyers.
  • This Portal has been developed by the Federation of Indian Export Organisations.
  • The portal will digitize Indian exporters and help them become discoverable online.

 

7) ACME Group, NYK Line ink MoU for green ammonia shipping

  • Sustainable energy company ACME Group on May 27 2022, signed an MoU with Japan-based NYK Line for cooperation in green ammonia.
  • Both the firms will together explore offering green ammonia to customers globally whereby ammonia would be supplied from ACME and NYK will be the shipping partner.
  • ACME is one of the leading global sustainable and renewable energy companies headquartered in Gurugram

 

8) West Bengal gets SKOCH award in education

  • West Bengal has bagged the prestigious ‘Star of Governance-SKOCH Award in Education!
  • The award will be bestowed on the state at a function in New Delhi on June 18, 2022 as a part of ‘India Governance Forum!
  • SKOCH Awards, instituted in 2003, aims to recognize people, projects and institutions that go the extra mile to make India a better nation.

 

9) BOB Financial and HPCL launch co-branded contactless RuPay Credit Card

  • In partnership with National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), BOB Financial and Hindustan Petroleum have launched the HPCL BOB co-branded contactless RuPay Credit Card.
  • The card comes with various features including rewards for spending on utilities, grocery and departmental stores.
  • BOB Financial is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Bank of Baroda.

10) Reliance General Insurance launches new health policy

  • Reliance General Insurance Company has announced the launch of its new health insurance policy Reliance Health Gain.

  • It comes loaded with 38 industry leading features like double cover that provides twice the amount of sum-insured to be used during the same claim

11) Fintech startup Mahagram partners with Induslnd Bank

  • A rural fintech company Mahagram has partnered with IndusInd Bank.
  • The aim is to create a new-generation Indian bank to digitize the country’s payment ecosystem.
  • Founded in June 2015, Mahagram aims to build India’s largest network of last-mile retail points of sale.
  • The partnership between the two aims to boost financial inclusion and encourage socio-economic development.

 

12) Uttarakhand forms panel led by retired SC judge on Uniform Civil Code

  • The Uttarakhand government on May 27, 2022 formed a five-member committee headed by retired SC judge Ranjana Desai, to prepare a draft on implementation of Uniform Civil Code in the state.
  • The committee will comprise Pramod Kohli (retired judge), social activist Manu Gaur, retired IAS Shatrughan Singh and Doon University vice-chancellor Surekha Dangwal.

13) Nawazuddin Siddiqui receives Excellence in Cinema Award

  • Bollywood actor, Nawazuddin Siddiqui received an award for Excellence in Cinema at the French Riviera Film Festival that took place on May 20-21, 2022 in Cannes.
  • Siddiqui was presented the award by Emmy-winning star Vincent De Paul.
  • Siddiqui received this award for his contribution to cinema.

 

14) Gaurav Sachdeva appointed as CEO of JSW One Platforms

  • JSW One Platforms, an e-commerce venture by JSW Group, has appointed Gaurav Sachdeva as CEO.
  • The e-commerce platform sells steel, cement and paint.
  • Before being appointed as the CEO of JSW One Platforms, Sachdeva was the head of JSW Ventures, where he led venture capital investments for the fund.
  • JSW Group is an Indian multinational conglomerate, based in Mumbai. It is led by Sajjan Jindal.

 

15) India, UAE sign MoU to establish a framework on climate action

  • India and United Arab Emirates have signed an MoU.
  • The basic objective of this MOU is to establish a framework to facilitate and enhance bilateral cooperation on climate action, and also contributes towards implementing the Paris Agreement.
  • Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav signed the MoU on behalf of India with his counterpart Sultan Al Jaber.

 

16) Dr Vishwa Cariappa honored with ‘Achievers of Bengaluru’ award

  • Dr Vishwa Cariappa BS, Managing Director of San Group of Companies was presented ‘Achievers of Bengaluru’ Award at a function held in Bengaluru in May 2022.
  • The Award, instituted by Vijaya Karnataka and Bangalore Mirror, was presented by Home Minister Araga Jnanedra.
  • San Group is a property management company. based in Karnataka.

 

17) CCEA clears sale of govt’s 29.5% stake in Hindustan Zinc

  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on May 25 2022 cleared the government’s 29.5% stake sale in Hindustan Zinc Ltd (HZL), which could fetch around Rs 38,000 crore to the exchequer.
  • The decision would give a push to the government’s disinvestment drive.
  • In 2002, the govt. offloaded a 26% stake in HZL to Sterlite Opportunities and Ventures Ltd for Rs 445 crore.

 

18) Govt approves guidelines for small business cluster development prog.

  • Union Government has approved new guidelines for the Micro and Small Enterprises Cluster Development Programme.
  • The guidelines will be implemented during the 15th Finance Commission Cycle.
  • The scheme aims at enhancing the competitiveness and productivity of micro and small enterprises by undertaking certain interventions.

19) Veteran journalist Sat Soni passes away

  • Veteran journalist and author Sat Soni passed away in May 2022.
  • Born in Myanmar, he had moved to Punjab in 1944 in the wake of the Japanese invasion during the Second World War.
  • He began his career in language journalism in 1951 by joining the Urdu daily, “Milap”.
  • He authored many books, including the biography of ex-President Giani Zail Singh “From Mudhouse to Rashtrapati Bhawan”.
