1) Narinder Batra steps down as President of Indian Olympic Association

  • Narinder Batra has tendered his resignation from the post of Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President.
  • The Indian Olympic Association or Indian Olympic Committee is the body responsible for selecting athletes to represent India at the Olympic Games, Asian Games and other international athletic meets.
  • It was founded in 1927 and is headquartered in New Delhi.

 

2) Piyali Basak: 1st Indian to scale Mt. Everest without oxygen support

  • West Bengal’s Piyali Basak, on 22 May 2022, became the first Indian woman to scale Mt. Everest without supplementary oxygen.
  • In October of 2021, Piyali also became the first woman to climb Mt. Dhaulagiri (8167 meters) without any oxygen support.
  • She has also represented India in an international expedition to Mt. Annapurna 1(8091m).
  • Annapurna 1 is the 10th highest peak in the world.

 

3) Chhattisgarh becomes 2nd state to recognise CFR rights

  • Chhattisgarh has become the 2nd state to recognise the Community Forest Resource (CFR) rights inside a National Park.
  • The state government approved the CFR claims of Gudiyapadar and Nagalsar villages in Kanger Ghati National Park in Bastar district on 25 May 2022.
  • In 2016, the Odisha government was the first to recognise CFRS inside the Simplipal National Park.

 

4) Rajesh Bhushan appointed as chairperson of Committee B at 75th WHA

  • India’s Health Secretary, Rajesh Bhushan has been appointed as the chairperson of Committee B at the 75th World Health Assembly (WHA).
  • The 75th World Health Assembly is being held between 22-28 May 2022, in Geneva, Switzerland, which is also the headquarters of the WHO.
  • The theme of this year’s Health Assembly is “Health for peace, peace for health.”

 

5) UP Finance Minister presents over Rs 6.15 lakh cr budget for FY23

  • Uttar Pradesh Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna on 26 May 2022 tabled a budget of over Rs 6.15 lakh crore in the state assembly.
  • The Rs 6,15,518.97 crore budget for the financial year 2022-23 has a provision of Rs 39,181.10 crore for the new schemes.
  • Under the Police Emergency Management System, the second phase of the 112 scheme will start with provision of Rs 730.88 crore.

 

6) Bangladesh to conduct its first digital census between June 15-21

  • In Bangladesh, more than 3.7 lakh enumerators, 64 thousand supervisors and 4500 officials will conduct the first digital census of the country between June 15 and 21.
  • This is the sixth Population and Housing census going to be conducted by the government of Bangladesh.
  • The country’s first Population and Housing Census was held in 1974.

7) Ministry of Coal to organize National Mineral Congress

  • Ministry of Coal will be organizing National Mineral Congress and field visit of Coal Gasification Plant of JSPL at Angul, Bhubaneshwar on 27-28 May 2022.
  • The major sub-themes of the Congress are Technology Adoption in Mining, Challenges in Aluminium and Steel Sector, and Coal Gasification and Roadmap for Coal to Hydrogen.

 

8) Mohinder K Midha : 1st Dalit Female mayor elected in London Council

  • Mohinder K Midha, an Indian-Origin Politician in the United Kingdom (UK), has become the first Dalit female mayor of a local London Council.
  • Midha was elected for the next year’s term of 2022-23 at a council meeting on 24 May, ’22.

9) Moody’s lowers India’s CY22 growth forecast to 8.8%

  • In the May update of its Global Macro Outlook 2022-23, Moody’s has lowered its calendar-year 2022 growth forecast for India to 8.8% from the earlier forecast of 9.1% made in March.
  • It has maintained its 2023 growth forecasts at 5.4%.
  • Moody’s expects the G-20 economies to grow 3.1% in 2022, down from 5.9% growth in 2021.

 

10) Ministry of Education releases National Achievement Survey 2021 report

  • Department of School Education and Literacy has released the National Achievement Survey (NAS) 2021 report.
  • It assesses the health of school education system in the country by conducting comprehensive evaluation survey of children’s learning competencies at classes 3, 5, 8, and 10th with a cycle period of three years.
  • The last National Achievement Survey was held in 2017.

 

11) India’s first Olympic Values Education Programme launched in Odisha

  • India’s first ‘Olympic Values Education Programme’ (OVEP) by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was launched in Odisha on 24 May, ’22.
  • It was officially launched by the Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik.
  • It will be implemented in 90 schools across 2 smart cities Bhubaneswar and Rourkela in the first phase.
  • Earlier this year, India was also elected to host IOC Session in 2023.

12) Dr. Jitendra Singh inaugurates India’s ‘First Lavender Festival’

  • Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh inaugurated India’s ‘First Lavender Festival’ in Bhaderwah, J&K, on 26 May 2022.
  • The 2 days Lavender Festival 2022 is being conducted under Union Government’s Aroma Mission 2.
  • The country’s first National Institute of High Altitude Medicine is also being built in Bhaderwah.

 

13) Indian Navy survey vessel “Nirdeshak” launched

  • Nirdeshak, a survey vessel of the Indian Navy, was launched at Kattupalli near Chennai on 26 May 2022.
  • Indian Navy’s two frontline warships – ‘Surat’ and ‘Udaygiri’ were also launched on May 17, by Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh.
  • Indian Navy Day – 4 December

14) FY22 GDP growth seen at 8.2-8.5%: SBI Ecowrap report

  • The State Bank of India research report Ecowrap, in its latest edition, projected India’s GDP growth for FY22 to be at 8.2-8.5 per cent.
  • For Q4FY22, the report projected growth at 2.7 per cent.
  • The report added that the Central Statistics Office had projected Q4 GDP at Rs 41.04 lakh crore and FY22 real GDP growth at Rs 147.7 lakh crore.

 

15) NMCG signs Quadripartite Agreements worth Rs. 273.52 crore

  • The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has signed 2 quadripartite agreements for development of sewage infrastructure for Maheshtala in West Bengal under Hybrid Annuity Mode.
  • It will have a total cost of Rs. 273.52 cr.
  • One agreement is an Escrow Agreement between NMCG, Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority, Maheshtala Waste Water Management Private Limited, and Union Bank of India.

 

16) Coinbase becomes first Crypto company to enter Fortune 500 list

  • Coinbase has become the first crypto firm to enter the prestigious Fortune 500 list.
  • Retail giant Walmart topped the ranking for the 10th straight year, followed by Amazon and Apple.
  • The Fortune 500 is an annual list published by Fortune magazine that ranks 500 of the largest United States corporations by total revenue for their respective fiscal years.

 

17) President inaugurates National Women Legislators Conference-2022

  • President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the National Women Legislators’ Conference-2022 in Thiruvananthapuram on 26 May 2022.
  • The 20-day conference is being hosted by the Kerala Legislative Assembly as part of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.
  • This is for the first time that women legislators’ conference is organised at the national level.

 

18) Indian Navy successfully tests surface to air missile system

  • The Indian Navy successfully tested its ship-based surface to air missile system by taking down a low flying target, in May 2022.
  • It also successfully carried out the test firing of the first indigenously developed naval anti-ship missile from a Seaking 42B helicopter in Odisha, in May’22.
  • An anti-ship version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile was also successfully test-fired earlier.

 

19) A Gopalakrishnan wins VASVIK Industrial Research Award 2020

  • Dr A Gopalakrishnan has won the prestigious VASVIK (Vividhlaxi Audyogik Samshodhan Vikas Kendra) Industrial Research Award for the year 2020 in the category of Agricultural Sciences and Technology.
  • He is the Director of the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI).
  • The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 1.51 lakh and citation.

 

20) India’s Long Jumper Murali Sreeshankar Wins Gold in Greece

  • India’s ace long jumper Murali Sreeshankar, on 26 May ’22, won the gold medal at the 12th International Jumping Meeting in Greece with an effort of 8.31m.
  • Thobias Montler of Sweden & Jules Pommery of France claimed silver with 8.27m & bronze with 8.17m respectively.
  • Sreesankar also created a record last month with a jump of 8.36m and is currently the national record holder.
