1) Haryana CM launches ‘smart e-beat’ system for Gurugram police

  • Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has launched an app-based system for police attendance and real time monitoring of patrolling by personnel in Gurugram.
  • The CM launched the ‘Smart E-Beat’ system.
  • This app-based system has been introduced in Gurugram under the ‘Smart Policing Initiative!
  • The ‘Smart E-Beat’ system would cover the area of all the 33 police stations.

 

2) Ashishkumar Chauhan takes charge as NSE Chief

  • Ashishkumar Chauhan has assumed charge as MD and CEO of the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
  • Chauhan earlier resigned as Managing Director and CEO of BSE and was relieved of his roles and responsibilities at the exchange from 25 July 2022.
  • An executive management committee of the exchange will be running its affairs till the appointment of the new MD and CEO.

 

3) India’s Indermit Gill appointed Chief Economist of World Bank

  • World Bank has appointed Indian national Indermit Gill as its Chief Economist and Senior Vice President for Development Economics.
  • Mr Gill will succeed American economist Carmen Reinhart in the role and his appointment will be effective September 1, 2022.
  • He is currently Vice President for Equitable Growth, Finance, and Institutions, where he led work on macroeconomics, debt, etc.

 

4) Frauds reported by PSBS decline to Rs 3,204 crore in FY22

  • As per RBI data, the amount involved in fraud cases reported by public sector banks (PSBs) has come down.
  • PSBS reported 5,624 cases of fraud in 2017-18, involving 28,884 crore, which declined to 2,369 cases corresponding to 3,204 crore in 2021-22.
  • The net profit of PSB’s increased to ₹66,519 crore in 2021-22 against 31,820 crore in 2020-21.
  • Gross NPAs of PSBs fell to ₹5,41,750 crore.

 

5) Sarbananda Sonowal launches Bal Raksha mobile app

  • Union Minister of Ayush Sarbananda Sonowal on 24 July 2022 launched Bal Raksha mobile app at the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA).
  • The app aims to raise parental awareness of paediatric preventive healthcare through Ayurvedic intervention.
  • Mr Sonowal also inaugurated the ‘Vaccination Centre for Children’ at the AIIA.

6) Competition Commission clears Axis Bank-Citi deal

  • Competition Commission has approved Axis Bank’s proposed acquisition of Citi’s consumer business in India, one of the largest deals in the country’s financial services space.
  • This deal worth Rs 12,325 crore was announced on March 30.
  • Under the deal Axis Bank would take over Citi’s credit cards, personal loans and wealth management businesses that are focused on the affluent segment.

 

7) World Mangrove Day: 26 July

  • World Mangrove Day is celebrated annually on 26 July.
  • Mangroves are rare ecosystems on the boundary between land & sea.
  • They are essential for the preservation of coastal communities.
  • This day aims to promote the conservation & sustainable growth of mangrove ecosystems.
  • It is also known as ‘International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem.’
  • It was first celebrated in 2015.

 

8) IMF cuts India’s GDP forecast for FY23 to 7.4%

  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on 26 July 2022 slashed India’s growth rate forecast for the financial year 2022-23 to 7.4%.
  • This forecast is sharply lower than IMF’s previous estimate of 8.2% for FY23.
  • However, it is marginally higher than the RBI’s latest estimate of a 7.2% growth rate for FY23.

9) 44th Chess Olympiad kicks off in Chennai from 28 July

  • The 44th Chess Olympiad kicks off in Chennai from 28 July 2022.
  • It will be held till 10th August 2022.
  • The prestigious competition, which is being organised since 1927, is being hosted in India for the first time and after 30 years in Asia.
  • 189 countries from around the world will participate in this competition.
  • Thambi is the official mascot of the 44th Chess Olympiad.

 

 

10) SAI starts “Create for India” campaign to cheer for Team India at CWG

  • Sports Authority of India (SAI) has launched the “Create for India” campaign to boost the enthusiasm of Team India in the upcoming 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG).
  • The 2022 CWG are scheduled to be held in Birmingham, England from 28 July to 8 August 2022.
  • A 215-member Indian athlete contingent across 16 disciplines will participate in this event.

11) Padma Shri awardee Sushovan Bandyopadhyay passes away

  • Sushovan Bandyopadhyay famous as Bengal’s ‘one rupee doctor’ passed away on 26 July 2022 in Kolkata.
  • He treated people for just one rupee and is fondly known as ‘Ek Takar Daktar’ (one rupee doctor).
  • He treated patients for close to 60 years & in 2020 his name was recorded in the Guinness World Records for treating the maximum number of patients.
  • He was also awarded the Padma Shri in 2020.

 

12) ONGC ties up with Greenko to produce green hydrogen

  • ONGC on 26 July 2022 signed an MoU with Greenko Group, to jointly pursue opportunities in renewable energy, green hydrogen, and green ammonia.
  • Under the partnership, the companies will jointly develop a 1-MMTPA green ammonia production and storage facility in the country for export purposes.

13) India to host ICC 2025 Women’s World Cup

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on 26 July 2022 that India will host the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup.
  • This will be the first time in over a decade that India will be hosting the tournament.
  • India had last hosted the women’s World Cup in 2013.
  • Bangladesh will host the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup while the 2026 edition will be held in England.

14) India designates 5 new Ramsar sites

  • Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav announced on 26 July 2022 that India has designated five new Ramsar sites or wetlands that are of international importance.
  • These are the Karikili Bird Sanctuary, Pallikaranai Marsh Reserve Forest and Pichavaram Mangrove in Tamil Nadu, the Sakhya Sagar in Madhya Pradesh and Pala Wetland in Mizoram.
  • There are now a total of 54 Ramsar sites in the country.
