1) ICC announces Development Awards 2022

  • International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the Development Awards 2022 on 25 July.
  • The awards honour world-leading initiatives and innovative programmes undertaken to develop the game of cricket in emerging nations.
  • Namibia won the ICC Development Initiative of the Year for their Mini-Cricket Programme.
  • Nigeria won the 100 per cent Cricket Female Cricket Initiative of the Year.

 

2) Deepak Miglani appointed as Indian ambassador to Sao Tome and Principe

  • Deepak Miglani has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe on 25 July 2023.
  • Miglani is currently serving as Director in the Ministry of External Affairs.
  • India and Sao Tome and Principe have had friendly relations since 1975.
  • Sao Tome and Principe gained independence from Portugal in 1975.

 

3) UGC passes guidelines for Institutional Development Plan

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) has passed draft guidelines for Institutional Development Plan for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).
  • The guidelines are aimed at improving the quality of higher education in India and bringing it to international standards.
  • The National Education Policy 2020 enunciates that Quality Higher Education must aim to develop good, and creative individuals.

 

4) UP govt to include ‘Safe City App’ in Smart City App

  • Uttar Pradesh to include the Safe City app in the Smart City app to ensure timely work completion.
  • The Safe City project involves collecting data from CCTV cameras in 17 Municipal Corporations and Gautam Budh Nagar.
  • A committee is to be constituted soon for the project.
  • Mission Director Smart City Dharmendra Pratap Singh has been nominated as a state-level nodal officer for the project.

 

5) Goa to host the world’s biggest national male pageant

  • Goa will host the world’s biggest national male pageant “The Rubaru” Mr. India competition.
  • It is the biggest and most respected competition for men in the world.
  • The candidates will undergo several preliminary activities like the formal wear round, the health and fitness round, & the individual interviews.
  • The Chief Minister of Goa, Pramod Sawant, will be at the event as the chief guest.

 

6) Kargil Vijay Diwas: 26 July

  • Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed on 26 July every year to honour the sacrifices of all 527 soldiers who were martyred in the war against Pakistan in 1999.
  • It is named after the success of Operation Vijay.
  • The Kargil war ended on 26 July after 60 days of fighting.
  • To celebrate the 24th anniversary, an all-women motorbike expedition has been organised from Delhi to Kargil War Memorial in Drass.

 

7) Tata Motors appoints Rajesh Kannan as President and CDIO

  • Tata Motors have announced the appointment of Rajesh Kannan as President and Chief Digital and Information Officer.
  • Prior to joining Tata Motors Limited, he was working with Tata Consultancy Services Limited.
  • Kannan has twenty-eight years of experience delivering transformative, end-to-end digital and IT engagements for global organisations across multiple sectors.

 

8) Ajay Vijay Bathija named Coca-Cola India VP & Southwest Asia region

  • Beverage company Coca-Cola India appointed Ajay Vijay Bathija as vice president of franchise operations for the Southwest Asia region.
  • He will lead franchise operations for markets of Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives and Sri Lanka.
  • Coca-Cola sells brands such as Coca-Cola, Thums Up, Charged by Thums Up, Fanta, Limca, Sprite, Maaza, and Minute Maid range of juices.

 

9) Reserve Bank of India sets restrictions on national co-operative bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed limitations on The National Cooperative Bank, one of Bengaluru’s oldest institutions, due to its deteriorating financial status.
  • The bank can now only pay depositors ₹50,000 across all accounts.
  • As a result, the bank is not permitted to make new loans or accept new deposits without prior approval from the RBI.

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is the central banking institution of India and is responsible for the monetary policy, regulation of the banking sector, and the issuance and management of the Indian rupee currency.
  • It was established on April 1, 1935, in accordance with the RBI Act, of 1934.

11) IMF raises India’s 2023 GDP growth forecast to 6.1%

  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on 25 July 2023, revised India’s GDP growth forecast to 6.1% for 2023.
  • However, the IMF kept the growth forecast for 2024 at 6.3%.
  • Earlier in June 2023, Fitch Ratings raised its FY24 (2023-24) growth forecast for the Indian economy to 6.3%.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has also projected FY24 Indian economic growth at 6.5%.

 

12) India finish 2nd on medal tally at ISSF World Championship in S. Korea

  • India finished 2nd on the medal tally at the ISSF Junior Shooting World Championships in Changwon, South Korea.
  • The championships saw 90 Indian shooters compete in the under-21 age category.
  • Indian shooters won 17 medals, including 6 golds, 6 silvers, and 5 bronzes.

 

13) Uttar Pradesh govt to raise retirement age of doctors to 65 years

  • The Uttar Pradesh govt is considering a proposal to increase the retirement age of government doctors from 62 years to 65 years to address the shortage of doctors.
  • In January, a panel was set up to evaluate the proposal for increasing the retirement age from 62 to 65 years of age.
  • Currently, there are 14,000 doctors working across 19,000 sanctioned posts in the state.

 

14) Ministry of Textiles organizes national conclave on Technical Textiles

  • Ministry of Textiles, under its flagship scheme National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM), organized the 6th National Conclave on Standards & Regulations in association with FICCI and BIS.
  • The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) released 4 new standards during the conclave.
  • More than 150 participants attended the conclave including officials and representatives from Central Ministries.

 

15) Aviation Minister inaugurates 3 Flight Training Academies in Khajuraho

  • Jyotiraditya M Scindia inaugurated three Flight Training Organizations (FTO) in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh.
  • The total number of FTOs in Madhya Pradesh will now be six, with three at Khajuraho, one at Indore, one at Sagar, and one at Guna.
  • The aviation sector has seen exponential growth with 148 airports developed in the past nine years.
  • There are 57 flying academy organizations in India.

 

16) Phangnon Konyak becomes 1st woman from Nagaland to chair Rajya Sabha

  • Phangnon Konyak from Nagaland is the first woman to preside over the Rajya Sabha.
  • She also became the first woman member to be appointed to the panel of Vice-Chairpersons on July 17, 2023.
  • Chairman, Rajya Sabha, Jagdeep Dhankhar nominated 4 women members to the panel of Vice-Chairpersons to bring about gender equality.
  • The panel contains a total of eight names, out of which half are women.

 

17) PM Modi to dedicate International Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre

  • Prime Minister Modi will dedicate the International Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre (IECC) complex at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi on 26 July 2023.
  • The IECC complex was developed as a national project at a cost of about 2,700 crore rupees.
  • It comprises of multiple state-of-the-art facilities including a convention centre, exhibition halls, and amphitheaters.

 

18) Vietnam and Israel sign free trade agreement

  • Israel and Vietnam signed a free trade agreement, Israel’s first with a member of ASEAN.
  • The agreement will lead to mutual tariff reductions on trade products.
  • It will also facilitate trade in services, investments, and standardization.
  • The agreement is expected to provide a competitive advantage to Israel.
  • Israel signed a similar free trade agreement with South Korea in December 2022
