1) France to withdraw ambassador, troops from Niger after coup

  • French President Emmanuel Macron announced that French troops will leave Niger by the end of 2023, following a coup.
  • The junta deposed ousted President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26 and severed military ties with France.
  • Niger has about 5% of the world’s uranium.
  • French nuclear group Orano SA has halted uranium ore processing at one of its facilities in Niger

 

2) Italy’s Marco Bezzecchi wins MotoGP Bharat 2023, Martin finishes 2nd

  • Marco Bezzecchi won the maiden Indian GP at the Buddh International Circuit in Noida on 23 September, with Spain’s Jorge Martin and France’s Fabio Quartararo finishing second and third, respectively.
  • The race was held at a reduced distance of 21 laps to ease the stress on the riders.

  • The capsule carrying the samples landed in Utah, making it the largest asteroid sample ever collected.
  • Bennu, the asteroid from which the samples were collected, is believed to be rich in carbon & water molecules.
  • The Osiris-Rex spacecraft was launched in 2016 and reached Bennu in 2018.

 

7) X’s head of policy for India, South Asia Samiran Gupta resigns

  • Social media platform X’s (formerly Twitter) government affairs head for India and South Asia Samiran Gupta has resigned.
  • Gupta joined X in February 2022 before Elon Musk acquired the company.
  • Gupta was the most senior India employee for X and was responsible for “key content-related policy issues” and “defending Twitter’s position with new policy developments.

  • Veteran screenwriter Prayag Raj, known for his contributions to iconic Amitabh Bachchan starrers, has passed away.
  • Prayag Raj has written over 100 films.
  • He worked with Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra and others during his career.
  • He wrote the screenplay for many films including ‘Dharamveer’, ‘Ponga Pandit’, ‘Desh Premee’, ‘Parvarish’, ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’, among others.

 

9) World’s largest Hindu temple outside India to be inaugurated on 8 Oct

  • The world’s largest Hindu temple outside India will be inaugurated in New Jersey on October 8, 2023.
  • The temple was built by an army of over 12500 volunteers from across the US over a period of 12 years.
  • The temple includes 10000 statues, carvings of Indian musical instruments and dance forms.
  • The temple houses the largest elliptical dome of traditional stone architecture ever constructed.

  • Sanjeev Mantri has been named the new MD and CEO of ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company, replacing Bhargav Dasgupta.
  • Sanjeev Mantri has been with the ICICI Group for over 20 years, beginning his career with ICICI Bank in 2003.
  • Bhargav Dasgupta, the outgoing MD and CEO of ICICI Lombard, has been appointed as Vice President of the Asian Development Bank.

  • World Pharmacist Day is celebrated on September 25th to recognize and honour the contributions of pharmacists to global health.

  • Google Doodle celebrates South African jazz pianist and composer Todd Matshikiza.
  • Matshikiza was born in Queenstown, South Africa in 1921 and came from a musical family.
  • He established the Todd Matshikiza School of Music in Johannesburg in 1947.
  • Matshikiza was a writer for Drum magazine and wrote columns on jazz.
  • “King Kong” was an all-Black jazz musical that premiered in 1958.

 

15) Antyodaya Diwas: 25 September

  • Antyodaya Diwas is celebrated annually in India on September 25 to honour the birth anniversary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya.
  • Upadhyaya was a co-founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and a thinker of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
