1) ICC announces 1st ever umpire education course for aspiring officials
- International Cricket Council (ICC) on 24 July 2023, announced the release of its first-ever education course for aspiring Match Officials – the ICC Umpire Foundation Certificate.
- The course is designed to introduce learners to the basic fundamentals of umpiring.
- The course is completely free to access and delivered entirely online through a micro-learning approach.
2) Nirmala Sitharaman presides over the 164th Income Tax Day celebrations
- The 164th anniversary of Income Tax Day was observed by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) and all its field offices across India on 24 July 2023.
- Union Minister of Finance & Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman presided over the event.
- As part of the celebrations, several taxpayers from diverse economic and industrial fields were invited as first-hand witnesses in the tax procedures.
3) Govt approves 8.15% interest rate on Employees Provident Fund deposits
- Union govt has notified an interest rate of 8.15% on deposits under the Employees’ Provident Fund scheme for 2022-23.
- The EPFO has directed its field offices to credit the interest into the accounts of over 6 crore active members as of March 2023.
- Employers are now required to credit an additional amount of 0.05% to all subscribers due to the new, increased EPFO rate of 8.15% for 2022-23.
4) Centre grants in-principle approval to set up 21 greenfield airports
- Govt has approved the establishment of 21 new Greenfield airports across the country.
- 11 Greenfield airports are operational in the country.
- The approved airports include Mopa in Goa, Navi Mumbai, and Sindhudurg in Maharashtra.
- Other approved airports are in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh.
5) Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik (UDAN) Scheme
- UDAN stands for Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik and is a regional airport development program of the Government of India.
- The scheme aims to upgrade under-serviced air routes and make air travel affordable for the common citizen.
- It is part of the Regional Connectivity Scheme, which was launched in 2016.
- The scheme seeks to connect unserved and underserved airports in the country.
6) India, Argentina signs MoU for bilateral exchange of young researchers
- India and Argentina have agreed to a bilateral exchange of young researchers and Startups, particularly in the field of Biotechnology and Agriculture.
- The two countries also decided to hold comprehensive talks in the field of Science & Technology.
- India is the 4th largest trading partner of Argentina, with bilateral trade of 6.4 billion US dollars in the year 2022.
7) Geneva School of Diplomacy grants honorary Doctorate to Shashi Tharoor
- The Geneva School of Diplomacy & International Relations held its graduation ceremony on July 23, 2023.
- Dr Shashi Tharoor was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate in International Relations degree.
- The event was attended by distinguished guests, including esteemed Ambassadors and senior diplomats.
- He is the Chairman of the Parliament’s Standing Committee on Chemicals and Fertilizers.
8) Kanpur Jail to launch radio station for prisoners on August 15
- A radio station is set to start operating soon in Kanpur Prison.
- The radio station will be launched on August 15 on the occasion of Independence Day.
- Songs related to patriotism and devotion will also be aired.
- Prisoners themselves will play the role of radio jockeys in this jail.
- The initiative aims to improve the mental condition of the prisoners.
9) India-UK hold 11th round of FTA negotiations to enhance trade
- India and the United Kingdom (UK) concluded the 11th round of talks for the UK-India Free Trade Agreement.
- Union Minister Piyush Goyal visited the UK as part of the UK-India FTA negotiations on July 10-11.
- Union Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal also visited the UK.
- The India-UK bilateral trading relationship was worth Pound 34 billion in 2022, growing by Pound 10 billion in one year.
10) Tripura’s Asmita Dey wins gold at Junior Asian Judo Championships 2023
- Asmita Dey won the gold medal in the Junior Asia Cup Judo Championship in Macau, China.
- She competed in the women’s 48 kg category against opponents from 27 different countries.
- The Judo Asian Championship is organized by the Judo Union of Asia.
- The men’s tournament began in 1966 and was held approximately every four years, until 1991.
11) China’s Zheng Qinwen beats Jasmine Paolini to win Palermo Open 2023
- Zheng Qinwen secured her first career title with a comeback victory over Jasmine Paolini in the Palermo Ladies Open 2023 final.
- Ranked No.26, Zheng became the 11th Chinese woman to win a WTA singles title.
- This win marks Zheng’s first WTA 250 championship.
- Palermo Ladies Open, is a women’s tennis tournament in Palermo, Italy that is played on outdoor clay courts at the Country Time Club.
12) Tenzing Yangki becomes the 1st female IPS officer of Arunachal Pradesh
- Tenzing Yangki become the 1st female IPS officer of Arunachal Pradesh who cracked the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination 2022.
- Tenzin Yangki achieved a rank of 545 and has become the first lady IPS officer from Arunachal Pradesh.
- Robin Hibu was the first IPS officer from Arunachal Pradesh.
- He joined as an IPS officer in 1993.
13) Typhoon Doksuri becomes a super typhoon in Pacific Ocean
- A typhoon called Doksuri is moving towards the Philippines, and it could strengthen into a super typhoon.
- The typhoon began as a tropical storm in the Western Pacific on 24 July 2023.
- It is expected to hit Luzon, the Philippines’ largest and most populous island on 25 July.
- A super typhoon is the highest and most destructive level on the scale, with catastrophic damage to residential areas.
