  • 1962: President John F. Kennedy alerted Americans to the Cuban missile crisis.
  • 1964: French philosopher and writer Jean-Paul Sartre was announced the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature; however, he became the first person to decline the award.
  • 2008: Chandrayaan-1, India’s first lunar space probe, was launched, and it later found water in the Moon’s atmosphere.

 

1) India Twin storms: Cyclone Tej in Arabian Sea, Hamoon in Bay of Bengal

  • Weather experts have predicted the formation of twin cyclones in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, in a rare phenomenon previously observed in 2018.
  • While cyclone ‘Tej’ is set to turn into a severe storm brewing in the Arabian sea, cyclone ‘Hamoon’ in the Bay of Bengal is in a premature stage.

 

2) First Gold Medal: Assam women’s badminton team in 37th National Games

  • Assam bagged the first gold medal of the 37th National Games when their women’s badminton team blanked Maharashtra 3-0 in the finals at the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee stadium,Goa.
  • Karnataka bagged the men’s team gold with a 3-1 victory over Maharashtra.
  • Assam Badminton Team: Ashmita Chaliha and Isharani Baruah.

 

3) UP: Gonda creates history, organises country’s biggest Kanya Puja

  • The country’s biggest girl worship ceremony ‘Shakti Vandan’ was organised in Uttar Pradesh.
  • During this, another milestone was established in the direction of the Chief Minister’s Mission Shakti Abhiyan by performing Kanya Puja of 11,880 daughters of different sections from different development blocks of the district.
  • Nine women of the district were also honoured with the Navdevi Award.

 

4) Tonga volcanic eruption of 2022 depleted huge amounts of ozone rapidly

  • The Tongan volcanic eruption of 2022 caused large, rapid depletion of ozone by injecting huge amounts of water vapour into the stratosphere.
  • The eruption notably injected an unprecedented amount of water vapour – about 10 per cent of the total global mean stratospheric burden – to very high altitudes of up to 55 kilometres, an international team of researchers from the US.

 

5) Yogi govt sets up URIDA to implement CM Grids scheme

  • The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has set up the Urban Road Infrastructure Development Agency (URIDA) in a big push to infra development in the state.
  • The Yogi government recently approved the Chief Minister Green Road Infrastructure Development Scheme (Urban) worth Rs 500 crore, known as the ‘CM Grids Scheme.’

 

6) Bihar: Durga Puja pandal themed on G20 summit draws crowds in Patna

  • A Durga Puja pandal in Patna, themed on the recent G20 Summit hosted in the national capital, is attracting plenty of eyeballs and crowds of revellers.
  • The pandal, modelled on the state-of-the-art Bharat Mandapam at Delhi’s Pragati Maidan, which hosted the summit, also showcases models of the world leaders and prominent international delegates who attended the two-day event.

 

7) Durgapuja at one of the Shaktipeeth in Bangladesh

  • A little-known Mahalaxmi temple in a small village called Joinpur near Sylhet, Bangladesh is one of the Shaktipeeth.
  • The temple is locally known as Shri Shri Mahalakshmi Bhairabi Griba Maha Peetha in Sylhet.
  • Mahalaxmi temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas and is one of the holiest sites for devotees of the Shaktism sect of Hinduism.
  • There are five Shakti Peethas in Bangladesh.

 

8) ANUBHAV AWARDS 2023 will be conferred by Dr Jitendra Singh

  • The Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare will be holding the Anubhav Awards 2023 Ceremony in Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
  • He will launch Nation-wide Digital Life Certificate 2.0 portal.
  • He will launch Integrated Pensioners’ Portal with Punjab National Bank & Bank of Baroda.
  • Furthermore, he will also inaugurate Pre-Retirement Counselling workshop for central Governemnt employees.

 

9) Para Asian Games 2022: India wins 9 including 3 gold on Day 1

  • At the 4th Asian Games being held in Hangzhou, China, India began its campaign by adding 4 medals to its kitty.
  • In women’s canoeing, Prachi Yadav bagged the first silver medal for the country.
  • In the men’s high jump T-63 event, India swept the podium with Shailesh Kumar winning the gold, Mariyappan Thangavelu winning the silver and Ram Singh Padhiyar winning the bronze.

 

10) Abu Dhabi Masters 2023: Unnati Hooda captures women’s singles title

  • Unnati Hooda beat Samiya Imad Farooqui to capture the women’s singles title at the Abu Dhabi Masters 2023.
  • 16-year-old Unnati Hooda defeated the 20-year-old Samiya Imad Farooqui 21-16, 22-20.
  • This is her second BWF Super 100 World Tour title.
  • She became the youngest Indian to clinch a BWF title last year at 14 years of age.

 

11) CJI D Y Chandrachud felicitated at alma mater Harvard Law School

  • Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud has been felicitated with the ‘Award for Global Leadership’ by the Center on the Legal Profession, Harvard Law School.
  • The chief justice was announced as the recipient of the award on January 11, 2023, in an online ceremony.
  • The CJI remembered his time at Harvard as an LLM student in 1982-83 and then a SJD candidate in 1983-1986.
