1) NTPC signs statement of intent with NITI Aayog
- NTPC Ltd has signed a Statement of Intent (Sol) with the NITI Aayog to develop net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions roadmap for the corporation.
- The Sol seeks to formalise a framework of cooperation between the parties to facilitate NTPC to strategies on diversification of its generation mix to eventually reduce its carbon footprint and support.
2) UP govt ropes in Deloitte to make state $1 trillion economy
- The Uttar Pradesh govt has decided to appoint Deloitte India as a consultant to suggest plans for bringing the state’s economy to the USD 1 trillion. mark.
- With a gross state domestic product (GSDP) of $238.8 billion, currently UP is ranked the 3rd largest economy in India.
- Deloitte is an international professional services network headquartered in London.

3) UAE honours Kamal Haasan by granting him Golden Visa
- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on 21 July 2022 granted Kamal Haasan, one of the Tamil film industry’s top stars, its prestigious ‘Golden Visa.’
- The UAE Golden Visa is a long-term residence visa system, extending from 5 to 10 years.
- It is granted to achievers from various fields, professionals and those with promising abilities.

4) PM Modi unveils ‘Varuna’, India’s first passenger drone
- PM Narendra Modi on 20 July 2022 unveiled ‘Varuna’, India’s first passenger drone in New Delhi.
- Varuna has been developed by a startup ‘Sagar Defence Engineering’ specifically for the Indian Navy.
- Varuna can carry a 130 kg human payload & has a range of 25 km.
- It has 25-33 minutes of flight time.

5) National Flag Adoption Day: 22 July
- Every year, India celebrates National Flag Adoption Day on July 22.
- It was on this day that the tricolour was adopted as the national flag of India in 1947.
- The motion to adopt the tricolour as the national flag of India was put forward by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on 22 July 1947 in the Constituent Assembly.
- The National Flag of India was designed by Indian freedom fighter Pingali Venkayya.
6) European Central Bank raises interest rates after more than 11 years
- The European Central Bank (ECB) has raised interest rates for the first time in more than 11 years as it tries to control soaring eurozone inflation.
- The central bank of 19 nations that share the euro currency, raised its key interest rate by 0.5 percent or 50 basis points to zero as against the expectation of a smaller hike of 25 basis points.
7) BCCI announces Asia Cup tournament in T-20 format
- Board of Control for Cricket in India, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has confirmed that the Asia Cup, which was scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka, would be played in the UAE.
- It is slated to be held from the 27 August to 11 September 2022 and will be played in the T-20 format.
- The development comes after the 3rd Lanka Premier League (LPL) was postponed due to the ongoing crisis.
8) Winners of 68th National Film Awards announced
- The winners of the 68th National Film Awards-2020 were announced by Information & Broadcasting Ministry on 22 July 2022 in New Delhi.
- Best Feature Film: Soorarai Pottru
- Best Actor: Suriya for Soorarai Pottru & Ajay Devgn for Tanhaji
- Best Actress: Aparna Balamurali for Soorarai Pottru
- Madhya Pradesh won the ‘Most Film Friendly State’ award.
- National Film Awards were first awarded in 1954.
9) Dinesh Gunawardena takes oath as Sri Lanka’s new Prime Minister
- In Sri Lanka, Dinesh Gunawardena took the oath as Sri Lanka’s new Prime Minister on 22 July 2022.
- Gunawardena’s appointment comes a day after six-time Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as the country’s new President.
- Sri Lanka’s new Cabinet of ministers was also sworn in on 22 July 2022.
10) India and Bangladesh agree for effective implementation of CBMP
- India and Bangladesh have agreed to effectively implement the Comprehensive Border Management Plan (CBMP).
- It will control border crimes including smuggling of drugs and narcotics, arms and ammunition, fake currency and gold among other things.
- A Joint Record of Discussion (JRD) was signed between Border Security Force and Border Guards Bangladesh.
11) Centre considering extension of PMAY-Urban Mission up to March 2024
- The extension of government’s flagship urban housing scheme, Prime Minister Awas Yojana (PMAY) Urban up to March 2024 is under consideration by the Ministry of Housing.
- Meanwhile, an interim extension of 6 months for all verticals except Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme has been granted.
- Since June 25, 2015 the scheme has provided all-weather ‘pucca’ houses to all eligible urban beneficiaries.
12) Burhanpur: First ‘Har Ghar Jal’ certified district in the country
- Burhanpur of Madhya Pradesh has become the first ‘Har Ghar Jal’ certified district in the country.
- Burhanpur is the only district in the country. where people from each of 254 villages have access to safe drinking water through taps.
- Only 36.54% of households in Burhanpur had potable drinking water through tap connections at the time of the launch of Jal Jeevan Mission on 15th August 2019.
13) Indian students bag three gold in international Olympiads
- Indian students bagged three gold, sixteen silver, and five bronze medals in various international Olympiads in Mathematics, Physics, Biology, and Chemistry.
- The Mathematics Olympiad was held in Norway and Biology Olympiad in Armenia, and the other two were hosted by Switzerland and China.
- In the International Mathematical Olympiad, (IMO) the Indian team got one gold and five bronze medals.
14) Seif Ahmed appointed as acting president of FIH
- The International Hockey Federation (FIH) on 20 July 2022 appointed Egypt’s Seif Ahmed as its acting president following Indian administrator Narinder Batra’s resignation from the post.
- Ahmed played for Egypt’s national team in 1968 & has a long association with Hockey as an umpire.
- He is a member on the FIH Executive Board since 2001.
