3) President appoints retd Allahabad HC judge Umesh Kumar as DERC chief
- Justice (Retd) Umesh Kumar of Allahabad High Court has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) by President Droupadi Murmu.
- The Supreme Court had ordered directing Lt Governor of Delhi to appoint a DERC chairperson within two weeks.
- The President of India has appointed him under the sub-section 2 of Section 84 of the Electricity Act, 2003
4) Google Cloud launches anti-money-laundering tool for banks
- Google Cloud has launched Anti Money Laundering Al (AML AI) to help financial institutions detect money laundering more effectively and efficiently.
- AML AI provides a consolidated machine learning-generated customer risk score as an alternative to rules-based transaction alerting.
- The risk score is based on the bank’s data including network behavior, and Know Your Customer (KYC) data.
5) Bengaluru startup ecosystem ranked 20th on global list
- Bengaluru has clinched the 20th spot, moving up two places, in Startup Genome’s The Clobal Startup Ecosystems Qeport (CSEQ) 2023.
- While Silicon Valley remained on top, New York City and London were tied at No 2 With this, the top three ecosystems have all held on to their positions from 2020.
- Among the emerging ecosystems, Pune has moved into the 31-40 range in 2023, from 51-60 in 2022.
6) PM Modi-led Yoga session at UN creates Guinness World Record
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi led a Yoga session at the UN headquarters to mark the 9th edition of the International Day of Yoga.
- The Yoga celebration created a Guinness World Record for the participation of people of most nationalities.
- The theme for International Yoga Day 2023 was “Yoga for Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” which also represents “One Earth, One Family”.
7) Arundhati Roy wins 45th European Essay Prize for ‘Azadi’
- Arundhati Roy has won the 45th European Essay Prize for lifetime achievement.
- The prize recognizes outstanding essays that criticize current societies, their practices, and ideologies.
- The French translation of ‘Azadi’ titled ‘Liberte, fascisme, fiction’ appeared in Gallimard.
- The Prize has been awarded since 1975 and is the 1st literary award dedicated solely to the genre of the essay.
8) UNDP partners with DAY-NULM towards empowering women entrepreneurs
- The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM) have signed an MoU to empower women entrepreneurs.
- Currently, women account for only 15 percent of the total entrepreneurs in India.
- The project will cover eight cities in the initial phase, with the possibility of extension beyond 2025.

- It is a United Nations agency tasked with helping countries eliminate poverty and achieve sustainable economic growth and human development.
- The UNDP emphasizes developing local capacity towards long-term self-sufficiency and prosperity.
