1) MEA appoints Sandeep Chakravorty as next Ambassador to Indonesia

  • Sandeep Chakravorty, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) Officer of the 1996 batch, has been appointed as India’s next Ambassador to Indonesia.
  • Sandeep Chakravorty is currently serving as a Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
  • India is the second largest buyer of coal and crude palm oil from Indonesia and imports minerals, rubber, pulp and paper and hydrocarbon reserves.

 

2) PFC signs MoU worth 2.37 trillion in clean energy space

  • Power Finance Corporation (PFC) on 21 July 2023, announced that it has entered into loan agreements worth more than Rs 2.37 lakh crore with 20 companies.
  • These MoUs were signed with solar, wind power, green hydrogen, battery storage, and electric vehicle companies.
  • Adani, Geenco, ReNew, Continuum, Avaada, and JBM Auto were some of the companies with whom PFC signed the MOU.

 

3) National Mango Day: 22 July The National Day of the Mango is celebrated every year on July 22.

  • The National Horticulture Board of India came up with the idea for the International Mango Festival in 1987 as a way to honour the adored mango.
  • The term “mango” comes from the Malayan word “manna,” and the fruit’s seeds spread from Asia to many other regions of the world.

 

4) Pi Approximation Day: 22 July Pi Approximation Day is observed on 22

  • July every year because of the value of Pi which is 22/7.
  • Whereas Pi Day is celebrated on 14 March which is similar to the approximate value of 3.14 and also coincides with Albert Einstein’s birthday.
  • Pi is a mathematical constant, used in calculations of Mathematics.
  • The symbol of Pi was designed back in 1706 by mathematician Leonhard Euler.

 

5) L&T bags order worth $7000 crore for Mumbai-Ahmedabad rail project

  • The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has awarded L&T Construction order worth more than 7,000 crore for the Mumbai Ahmedabad high-speed rail project.
  • The company will execute 92 per cent of the main line between Shilphata and Ahmedabad.
  • The 508 km Bullet Train project will cover 155.76 km in Maharashtra, 4.3 km in Dadra & Nagar Haveli and 348.04 km in Gujarat.

 

6) Tony Bennett, American master pop vocalist passes away

  • Tony Bennett, the master pop vocalist, renowned for creating new standards in pop music, big band, show tunes, and jazz passed away.
  • He had won 20 Grammy Awards, a Lifetime Achievement Award, and two Primetime Emmy Awards.
  • In 2014, at age 88, Bennett became the oldest living performer with a No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart for “Cheek to Cheek,” his duet project with Lady Gaga.

 

7) Virat Kohli becomes 10th cricketer to play 500 international matches

  • Kohli became only the 10th cricketer to make 500 international appearances during the final Test match against West Indies on 21 July 2023 at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain.
  • Kohli also became the fourth Indian to join this list, with the other three being Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and MS Dhoni.
  • His career includes 274 ODIs, 115 T20ls, and 111 Test matches.

 

8) Himachal CM launches collateral-free loan scheme to empower women

  • Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on 20 July 2023, launched a collateral-free loan scheme for women.
  • The scheme named ‘Sashakt Mahila Rin Yojna’ is an initiative of Himachal Pradesh State Cooperative Bank (HPSCB).
  • It will provide loans to women for pursuing their entrepreneurial dreams, engage in livelihood activities, fulfil day to day needs and uplift their families.

 

9) Ministry of Culture, Indian Navy sign MoU to revive Tankai method

  • The Ministry of Culture and the Indian Navy have collaborated through an MoU to revive and preserve the ancient 2000-year-old shipbuilding technique known as the ‘stitched shipbuilding method’ or ‘Tankai method’.
  • The Tankai method is an ancient shipbuilding technique which entails stitching wooden planks together to build ships, eschewing the use of nails.

 

10) Centre releases guidelines for Signages on Expressways for road safety

  • Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has issued new guidelines for the provision of signages on Expressways and National Highways.
  • The guidelines focus on further improving road safety by incorporating best practices and world standards to offer improved guidance to the drivers.
  • The guidelines are designed to offer drivers clear and concise guidance, and safe journey on the roads.

 

12) RK Singh chairs 14th Clean Energy Ministerial meeting in Goa

  • Union Minister for Power R K Singh chairs 14th Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) and 8th Mission Innovation (MI) meeting in Gao on 21 July 2023.
  • The meeting focused on discussing the challenges in the path of energy transition and finding ways to move ahead towards creating a sustainable future.
  • India has set targets to meet 50% of its energy requirements from non-fossil sources by 2030.

 

13) Govt launches new tech initiatives under PMFBY to empower farmers

  • Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare launched new tech initiatives under Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) to empower farmers and streamline operations.
  • YES-TECH Manual and WINDS Portal were launched to enable accurate yield assessment and improved weather data management.
  • Delinking of subsidies was announced, ensuring farmers receive claim payments without delay.

 

14) Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY)

  • The PMFBY, launched on 18 February 2016 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is an insurance service for farmers for their yields.
  • It aims to reduce the premium burden on farmers and ensure early settlement of crop assurance claim for the full insured sum.
  • From 2020 Kharif onwards the enrollment is made 100% voluntary.
  • The scheme is implemented by empanelled general insurance companies
