1) Ranil Wickremesinghe wins Sri Lanka’s Presidential election
- Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe has won the presidential election held in the Sri Lankan Parliament with 134 votes.
- Dullas Allahaperuma received 82 votes and Anura K Dissanayake received three votes.
- Wickremesinghe, a six-time prime minister, became acting president after Rajapaksa fled to the Maldives.
- He has been elected as the eighth executive president of Sri Lanka.
2) International Moon Day: 20 July
- July 20, 2022 marked the inaugural celebration of International Moon Day.
- The United Nations General Assembly, on December 9, 2021, recognised the proposal submitted by the Moon Village Association and several other groups within the organisation.
- On July 20, 1969, US astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to reach the lunar planet.
3) RBI renews its statement of commitment to FX Global Code
- RBI has renewed its statement of commitment to the FX Global Code, which is a compilation of best market practices formulated by central banks worldwide.
- The code was initially launched in May, 2017 and updated on July 15, 2021.
- RBI had also facilitated formation of India Foreign Exchange Committee (IFXC) to promote adoption and adherence of the Code among FX market participants in India.
4) Himachal Pradesh: First state to connect all VLTD vehicles with ERSS
- Himachal Pradesh has become the first state in the country to connect all registered commercial vehicles equipped with Vehicle Location Tracking Device (VLTD) with Emergency Response Support System (ERSS).
- Now, these vehicles can be tracked anywhere in the country through VLTD.
- Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur inaugurated the system at a program organized in Shimla on 19 July 2022.
5) NAARM bags 2021 ICAR Sardar Patel Award
- The National Academy of Agricultural Research Management (NAARM) has bagged the Sardar Patel Outstanding ICAR Institute Award 2021.
- It won the award in the Large Institute Category for its overall performance.
- NAARM was established by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in 1976, to address issues related to agricultural research and education management, in India.
6) Centre cuts windfall tax on crude oil
- The central government lowered the windfall tax on crude oil production to 17,000 per tonne from 23,250 per tonne.
- It scrapped the ₹6 per litre export tax on petrol.
- The levy on diesel was cut to 10 per litre from 13 per litre earlier, and on aviation turbine fuel to 4 per litre from 6 per litre.
- The Government also clarified that SEZ units would now be exempt from the windfall tax.
7) Malayalam filmmaker KP Kumaran honoured with JC Daniel Award 2022
- Malayalam filmmaker KP Kumaran has been honoured with Kerala’s highest film award, the JC Daniel Award.
- He won the award for his contribution to the Malayalam film industry.
- The award comprises a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh, a citation, & a plaque.
- Kumaran made his directorial debut with Athithi in 1975 & won the National Award for Best feature film in Malayalam for his film Rugmini in 1989.
8) Indian passport ranks 87 in Henley Passport Index
- Indian passport was ranked at 87 in the Henley Passport Index.
- Japan, Singapore and South Korea have the most powerful passports in the world.
- The rest of the top 10 include countries such as Germany, Spain, Finland, Luxembourg, and Italy.
- The UK is sixth with access to 187 countries, while the US is seventh with a score of 186.
9) Los Angeles to host 2028 Summer Olympic Games in July 2028
- The organisers of the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympic Games have announced that the opening ceremony for the mega event will take place on July 14, 2028.
- The Games will be running through July 30, 2028.
- The LA28, which is the Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games 2028 revealed that Paralympic Games will begin on August 15, 2028, and close on August 27.
10) India-Namibia sign an MoU on wildlife conservation
- India and Government of the Republic of Namibia have entered into an MOU) on wildlife conservation and sustainable biodiversity utilization.
- They will establish cheetah into the historical range in India.
- The main thrust areas of the MOU include technological applications, mechanisms of livelihood generation for local communities living in wildlife habitats, etc.
11) CSIR-CECRI & GODI India tie up for cell manufacturing
- GODI India & CSIR-CECRI (Central Electrochemical Research Institute) have entered into a public-private partnership to operate & maintain an advanced Lithium-ion cell manufacturing facility in Chennai.
- It is a first-of-its-kind public-private partnership in India for large-scale advanced lithium-ion cell manufacturing.

12) Union Cabinet approves India-Maldives pact for judicial cooperation
- The Union Cabinet on 20 July 2022 approved the signing of an MOU for judicial cooperation between India and the Judicial Service Commission of the Republic of Maldives.
- It will provide a platform to tap the benefits of Information Technology for court digitisation in both countries.
- This is the eighth MoU signed between India and other countries in the field of judicial cooperation.
13) India drops three spots for mobile speeds, ranks 118
- India dropped three spots globally for mobile speeds to rank 118 in June 2022.
- Median mobile download speeds fell to 14.00 Mbps from 14.28 Mbps in May 2022, according to Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index.
- For the month of June, Norway ranks first at 126.96 Mbps in the median mobile download speed index and Chile ranks first at 213.73 Mbps in the median broadband download speed index.
14) ISSF Shooting World Cup 2022: India wins 15 medals, tops medal table
- India completed the ISSF Shooting World Cup 2022 campaign in Changwon, South Korea on 20 July 2022.
- India finished its campaign by topping the medal tally with a haul of 15 medals, including five gold, six silver and four bronze on July 20.
- On the final day of the competition, the trio of Anish Bhanwala, Vijayveer Sidhu and Sameer won the silver in the men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol team event.
15) Industry body launched to boost ties between India & UAE
- A new industry body ‘The Indo-UAE Economic Chamber of Commerce’ was launched in Chennai on 17 July 2022.
- It was launched to boost trade ties between India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
- The gems and jewellery sector is a substantial portion of India’s exports to the UAE.
- An MoU was signed between MM Gems and Jewellers (India) and Majestic Investment (UAE) in this connection.
16) NTPC signs pact with MASEN for cooperation in RE Sector
- NTPC Limited and the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN) on 20 July 2022 signed an MoU for cooperation in the renewable energy (RE) sector.
- This MoU was signed during the 17th CII EXIM conclave on India Africa Growth Partnership held in New Delhi.
- This MoU promises to usher in the joint development of utility-scale projects based on renewable energy in Africa.
