1) US places India, China, Russia on property rights priority watch list
- The US has again placed China and Russia on the list of countries that must be monitored for intellectual property-related issues.
- In its “2022 Special 301 Report” on the effectiveness of US trading partners’ protection and enforcement of intellectual property (IP) rights, it again placed India on the list of “Priority Watch List”.
- It has placed at least 21 countries on the list.
2) A fifth of world’s reptile species deemed threatened with extinction
- About a fifth of reptile species are threatened with extinction, as informed by researchers in the first comprehensive global status assessment for reptiles.
- The study examined 10,196 reptile species. including turtles, crocodilians, lizards, snakes, and the tuatara.
- They found that 21% of species are critically endangered, endangered or vulnerable to extinction.
3) Skill Ministry signs MoU with ISRO to upskill technical staff
- The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has signed an MoU with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
- The programme is aimed at creating a formal framework for short-term courses to provide training for the skill development and capacity-building of the technical staff of ISRO.
- The training will be held at the National Skill Training Institutes (NSTI).
4) SBI Cards expands partnership with TCS
- Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is expanding its strategic partnership with SBI Cards and Payments Services Ltd., India’s largest pure-play credit card issuer.
- The new engagement is built on a decade-long partnership.
- TCS had helped the company transform its core cards sourcing platform and digitized a significant portion of the process.
5) Vedaant wins gold at Danish Open 2022
- R Madhavan’s son Vedaant Madhavan won a gold medal in swimming at the Danish Open 2022 in Copenhagen, on Apr’22.
- He won the medal in the 800m swimming championship and finished in 8:17.28 minutes.
- He defeated swimmer Alexander L Bjorn by 0.10.
- Vedaant had won the silver medal in the 1500m freestyle event earlier, before bettering his 200m freestyle time to finish 12th overall in the event.
6) Sir David Attenborough earns UN ‘Champion of the Earth’ award
- Sir David Attenborough has been officially recognized as a “Champion of the Earth” by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
- He is just the fifth person to receive the award for lifetime achievement.
- Some of his most famous documentaries include Planet Earth, Blue Planet, Life on Earth, and Our Planet.
- Past winners of the award include Robert Bullard and Joan Carling.
7) Assam gets a cow ambulance service
- An ambulance service for sick and injured cows was inaugurated in Assam’s Dibrugarh district, in April 2022.
- The service, to be run by Gopal Gaushala, was inaugurated by Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu.
- It is the first cow ambulance service in the entire Northeast.
- The ambulance was brought in from Ahmedabad and is fitted with a hydraulic lift.
8) PM Modi inaugurates Chief Ministers-Chief Justices conference
- PM Narendra Modi inaugurated a joint conference of Chief Ministers and Chief Justices of High Courts on 30 April 2022.
- The event was being held after a gap of six years.
- The Joint Conference is an occasion for the executive and the judiciary to come together to create frameworks for simple and convenient delivery of justice and to discuss steps required to overcome the challenges.
9) India’s first Amrit Sarovar prepared in UP’s Rampur
- India’s first ‘Amrit Sarovar’ has been completed in Rampur’s Gram Panchayat Patwai.
- Under the Amrit Sarovar initiative, 75 water bodies will be developed and rejuvenated in each district as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
- 75 ponds in Rampur were selected to be developed as Amrit Sarovar.
- Now the work on the pond having the largest area in Gram Panchayat Singan Kheda has also started.
10) 1st May 2022 celebrated as Ujjwala Diwas
- Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) celebrated 1st May 2022 as Ujjwala Diwas to celebrate the achievements of PMUY.
- Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) is a major step towards social inclusion by providing free LPG connection to every BPL (below poverty line) household.
- The scheme was launched by PM Modi on 1st May 2016 at Ballia, Uttar Pradesh.

11) Shivalik Small Finance Bank appoints Anshul Swami as MD and CEO
- Shivalik Small Finance Bank has announced the appointment of Anshul Swami as its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, effective April 26, 2022.
- Previously, Swami was associated with RBL Bank as Head of Retail and Inclusion, Products.
- He has also held positions with Barclays, Citi Financial, and Britannia.
- Swami has worked across various customer segments like Retail, MSME, etc.
12) POSOCO ties up with IIT Delhi for research
- Northern Regional Load Despatch Centre of Power System Operation Corp. Ltd. (POSOCO) has signed an MoU with IIT Delhi.
- It has been signed to encourage research on issues related to India’s power sector and strengthen the interaction between academia and industry.
- POSOCO is responsible for secure, integrated operations of the national electricity grid.
13) International Labour Day: 1 May
- International Workers’ Day, also known as Labour Day in most countries, is observed every year on May 1.
- It recognizes employees’ contributions to society and their willingness to make sacrifices.
- It is also known as May Day in India.
- In India, Labour Day was first celebrated in 1923 by the Labour Kisan Party, which organised the May Day celebrations in Chennai (then Madras).
14) Tata group to merge Air Asia with Air India
- Tata Sons will merge Air India with Air Asia.
- Air India, which was recently acquired by the Tata group, has approached the Competition Commission of India (CCI) for acquiring a 100 percent stake in Air Asia India.
- Tatas had recently raised its stake in AirAsia India to 83.67 percent in December 2020.
- AirAsia India started flying in June 2014.
15) Meghalaya e-proposal system wins prestigious UN award
- Meghalaya’s Planning Department’s key initiative of the e-Proposal System has won UN Award – World Summit on the Information Society Forum (WSIS) Prizes 2022.
- The initiative is a part of Meghalaya Enterprise Architecture (MeghEA).
- It eliminates 75 per cent physical work of files in government departments.
- Meghalaya was selected among the top 360 projects across the world.
16) Eminent biologist Prof M Vijayan passes away
- Leading structural biologist M Vijayan, who laid the foundations of protein crystallography in India, passed away in April 2022.
- Vijayan was a former President of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA).
- Prof Vijayan was involved in the determination of insulin structure at Oxford University along with Dorothy Hodgkin and her legendary group.
17) Ardeshir B K Dubash conferred highest diplomatic award by the govt
- The former Honorary Consul of Peru in Mumbai, Ardeshir B.K. Dubash received the Order of Merit in the Diplomatic Service of Peru José Gregorio Paz Soldán, in April 2022.
- It is the highest distinction conferred by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru.
- Mr Dubash was designated as Honorary Consul of Peru on August 13th, 1973.
- The Order of Merit was instituted in 2004.
18) AP Abdullahkutty elected Chairperson of Haj Committee of India
- AP Abdullahkutty has been elected as the Chairperson of the Haj Committee of India.
- For the first time, two women have also been chosen as its Vice-Chairpersons.
- Abdullahkutty is the national Vice President of the BJP and a former Member of Parliament.
- Munnawari Begum is a member of the Central Waqf Council, and Mafuja Khatun is the vice president of the Bengal unit of the BJP.
19) Kenya’s former President Mwai Kibaki passes away
- Former Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki passed away in April 2022.
- Kibaki, a veteran politician whose career dated back to the birth of independent Kenya, served as the country’s third President from December 2002 to April 2013, taking over from the authoritarian rule of Daniel Arap Moi.
- His 2002 election ended 40 years of one-party rule since independence.
20) SAANS campaign launched for early detection of pneumonia
- Karnataka Health and Medical Education Minister K. Sudhakar launched ‘Social Awareness and Action to Neutralise Pneumonia Successfully’ (SAANS), in April 2022.
- It is a campaign to ensure greater awareness and early detection of pneumonia in children under five.
- The under-five mortality of Karnataka is at 28/1000 live births as per SRS 2018.
21) PV Sindhu wins bronze medal at Asia Badminton Championships
- In Asia Badminton Championships, PV Sindhu won her second Asian bronze medal after losing to Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in the semifinal in Manila, in April 2022.
- PV Sindhu is a two-time Olympic medallist and former world champion.
- This is Sindhu’s second medal in the tournament, she had claimed a bronze in the 2014 Gimcheon edition.
