1) Qila Aur Kahaniya: Gwalior Fort

  • This fort is situated on a mountain called ‘Gopachal’.
  • In 727 AD, a local chieftain named Surajsen started the construction of this fort with red sandstone.
  • The Gujari Mahal, built in this fort in the 15th century, symbolises the intense love of Raja Mansingh and Queen Mrignayani.
  • From 1398 to 1518, this fort was ruled by the Tomar dynasty.
  • Qutbuddin Aibak captured this fort but in 1211 AD

 

2) PM Narendra Modi to be conferred with Lokmanya Tilak National Award

  • Prime Minister will be honored with the Lokmanya Tilak award by Deepak Tilak, President of Tilak Smarak Mandir Trust.
  • The Award was instituted in 1983 by the Tilak Smarak Mandir Trust and is given every year on 1st August, the death anniversary of Lokmanya Tilak, to persons who have made remarkable contributions, for development of the nation.

 

3) Jasprit Bumrah to lead Team India for Ireland T20

  • Jasprit Bumrah will lead Team India for Ireland T20. Bumrah has returned to international cricket after a long injury layoff.
  • The BCCI’s senior selection committee announced the 15-member squad for the upcoming three-match T201 series against Ireland to be played in Dublin from the 18th of August.

 

4) University of Mumbai signs MOUS with 2 US Universities

  • The University of Mumbai has signed MOUS with 2 US universities, the University of Illinois and St. Louis University.
  • The agreements will pave the way for opportunities in advanced and skill-based education.
  • The University of Illinois will focus on promoting educational cooperation through experiential and skill training.
  • Louis University will collaborate on articulated degree programs.

 

5) Hyderabad to host India’s first IAU 50 Km World Championships

  • Hyderabad will host India’s first International Athletic Union’s Ageas Federation Life Insurance 50 km World championship on November 5, 2023.
  • The competition will feature four categories- men and women in individual and team events – besides the Master’s segment.
  • The event will also see three other runs – 21.1 half marathon, 10K and 5K Runs organized by NEB Sports.

 

6) Google Doodle celebrates Switzerland’s National Day

  • Google Doodle celebrates Switzerland’s National Day on August 1, 2023, with a waving national flag.
  • The day commemorates the alliance between the three cantons of Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden in 1291.
  • The festivities start with a traditional farmers’ brunch and a gathering on the “Rütli” Meadow.
  • The “Rütli” Meadow is where the confederates took their oath that formed the historic alliance.

 

7) UP govt to channelise water of overflowing rivers to parched fields

  • Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to channel overflowing river water to parched fields in a well-organized manner.
  • The Irrigation Department has been instructed to divert floodwater to all 71 reservoirs of the state by desilting them.
  • Only 18 districts in the state have seen average rainfall while 17 districts have seen more rain than usual.

 

8) Indian Army implements common uniform for Brigadier and above ranks

  • The Indian Army has implemented a new common uniform regulation for senior officers with Brigadier and above ranks irrespective of the parent cadre and initial appointment.
  • The move will reinforce common identity and Indian Army’s character as a fair and equitable organisation.
  • The decision was taken after detailed deliberations during the recently-concluded Army Commanders Conference

 

9) India, Finland to set up sustainability working group

  • India & Finland to set up a governmental working group on sustainability, with a focus on energy investments in biofuels in India.
  • The group will be represented by the Ministries of Environment, Power & Renewable Energy, and NITI Aayog.
  • Finland’s new Digitalisation, Education, Sustainability, Innovation (DESI) partnership aims to develop smart grids and deepen cooperation on sustainability

 

10) Parliament Passes Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill, 2023

  • The Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill, 2023 was passed by the Parliament on 31 July 2023.
  • The Bill was introduced in the Rajya Sabha on 20th July 2023 & passed after discussion.
  • The last amendments in the Cinematograph Act, of 1952 were made in 1984.
  • The bill aims to comprehensively curb the menace of ‘Piracy’.
  • The provisions include 3 months to 3 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 3 lakhs.

 

11) Over 49 crore accounts opened under PMJDY since its inception: FinMin

  • Over 49 crore accounts have been opened under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) since its inception.
  • More than two lakh crore rupees have been deposited in Jan Dhan’s account.
  • The scheme was launched in 2014 with the aim to provide universal access to banking facilities to people across the country.
  • The govt informed that more than 99% of villages are covered by a banking outlet.

 

12) India witnessed highest ever coal production in 2022-23

  • The Union govt has said that the country has witnessed the highest-ever coal production in 2022-23.
  • The all-India coal production in 2022-23 was over 893 Million tonnes in comparison to over 778 million tonnes in 2021-22.
  • 9 states reported a rise in coal production including Assam, and West Bengal. Meanwhile, a fall in the production of coal has been reported in Jammu and Kashmir in 2022-23.

 

13) Congress leader and former Speaker Vakkom Purushothaman passes away

  • Veteran Congress leader and former Kerala Speaker Vakkom Purushothaman, who also served as Governor of Mizoram, passed away
  • The veteran leader also served as Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
  • Purushothaman was a cabinet minister in the Kerala govt between 1971-77, 1980-81 and 2004-06.
  • He was the speaker of Kerala legislative assembly from 1982-84 and 2001-04.

 

14) DGT collaborates with Amazon Web Services to offer skilling programme

  • The Directorate General of Training (DGT) partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) India to upskill students in cloud computing, data annotation, artificial intelligence (AI), & machine learning (ML).
  • AWS India will provide individuals with self-paced online learning programs in emerging technologies at no cost.
  • The initiative will benefit students enrolled in the institutions under the DGT.

 

15) Over 6.23 core loans sanctioned under Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana

  • Over 6 core 23 lakh loans have been sanctioned under Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana (PMMY) in Financial Year 2022-23.
  • The objective of PMMY is to provide access to institutional finance to new or existing micro units or enterprises up to 10 lakh rupees.
  • Mudra loans under Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) can be availed of from a nearby branch office of a bank.

 

16) TRAI & C-DoT sign MoU to establish mechanism of telecommunications

  • Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT) signed an MOU in the field of telecommunications.
  • The TRAI Centre of Studies and Research (CSR) was established to enable technological studies in the telecom & broadcasting sectors.
  • The partnership aims to promote cooperation for research on regulatory practices & bridge gaps in understanding.

 

17) Myanmar Junta extends state of emergency for 6 more months

  • Myanmar’s National Defence and Security Council (NDSC) extended the country’s state of emergency by six months.
  • It will delay the elections which it had pledged to hold by Aug 2023.
  • Acting President Myint Swe announced the decision to prolong the state of emergency.
  • The state of emergency was initially declared in February 2021, when the army ousted the elected govt of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

 

18) Papua New Guinea qualify for ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024

  • Papua New Guinea (PNG) has qualified for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2024 by winning all six matches in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup East Asia Pacific (EAP) Qualifier.
  • This is the second time that PNG has qualified for the Men’s T20 World Cup.
  • The upcoming regional finals for Americas, Africa, and Asia will determine the remaining qualifying teams for the T20 World Cup.
