1) Neeli Bendapudi to be conferred with Immigrant Achievement Award
- Neeli Bendapudi, the Indian American President of Penn State University, will receive 2023’s prestigious Immigrant Achievement Award for her contributions to higher education in the US.
- The award is presented each year to an individual or organisation that exhibits a commitment and dedication to America’s heritage as a nation of immigrants and advocacy for humane immigration policy.
2) NASA successfully extracts Oxygen from Lunar Soil Simulant
- NASA scientists have successfully extracted oxygen from simulated lunar soil.
- This marks the first time this extraction has been done in a vacuum environment.
- A team from the Johnson Space Center in Texas conducted the test in conditions similar to those found on the moon, using a special spherical chamber with a 15-foot diameter called the Dirty Thermal Vacuum Chamber.
3) Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman launches ‘Reflections’
- Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman launched ‘Reflections’, a book authored by eminent banker Narayanan Vaghul, in Mumbai, on 28 April 2023.
- The book carries a vivid account of Vaghul’s experiences spanning decades in India’s financial landscape.
- She also recognized his contributions to mentoring leaders, which have left a lasting impact.
4) Index of Eight Core Industries increases by 3.6 percent in March 2023
- The combined Index of Eight Core Industries (ICI) increased by 3.6% (provisional) in March 2023 as compared to the Index of March 2022.
- The production of Coal, Fertilizers, Steel, Natural Gas, and Refinery Products increased in March 2023 over the corresponding month of last year.
- The Eight Core Industries comprise 40.27% of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production.
5) International Dance Day: 29 April
- International Dance Day is celebrated on 29 April every year.
- The day aims to raise awareness about the benefits of dance and bring people together through it.
- The day was established in 1982 by the Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute (ITI), UNESCO’s main partner for performing arts.
6) First batch of women officers commissioned into Regiment of Artillery
- In the Indian army, for the first time, five Women Cadets got commissioned into the Regiment of Artillery at Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai.
- Out of total 186 Short Service Commissioned Officers, 121 men Cadets and 36 Women Cadets were inducted into various Arms and Services of the Indian Army while 29 officers are from Bhutan.
7) Pakistan is the largest recipient of ADB loans in Asia
- Pakistan has become the largest recipient of the Asian Development Bank (ADB)-funded programmes/projects in the year 2022.
- According to the ADB Annual Report 2022, out of total disbursement of over USD 31.8 bn to 40 countries, Pakistan received loans of USD 5.58 billion.
- Out of the total lending of USD 5.58 bn, Pakistan received concessional funding of USD 2.67 bn from the bank in 2022.
8) World Veterinary Day: 29 April
- World Veterinary Day is celebrated on the last Saturday of April.
- In 2023, it was observed on 29 April.
- The day is observed to mark the importance of veterinary doctors who serve to protect animals.
- These veterans work on improving animal lives and thus human lives.
- The theme of World Veterinary Day for 2023 is ‘Promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusiveness in the Veterinary Profession’.
