1) PV Sindhu slips to world no. 17

  • Battling an inconsistent form, double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu on Tuesday slipped five places to world number 17 in the latest BWF world rankings.
  • Ever since returning from a five-month long injury layoff, Sindhu has struggled to string together a series of wins in a week, resulting in a title-less streak this season.

 

2) Best Web Series Award introduced at IFFI-Goa

  • Union Information & Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said the “Best Web Series Award” at the International Film Festival of India-Goa would be presented beginning this year.
  • Beginning this year at the 54th International Film Festival of India, the award will be presented annually
  • The Minister said the award aimed to incentivize and create investment opportunities in India’s OTT sector

 

3) Aruna Tanwar bags three gold medals in Taekwondo Championships

  • Paralympian Aruna Tanwar added another feather to her cap by securing three gold medals in three Taekwondo championships held on three consecutive days in Australia.
  • Currently ranked world number 4, Aruna Tanwar bagged three gold medals at Australia Open Para Taekwondo Championship, President Cup Para Taekwondo Championship and Oceania Para Taekwondo Championship held in Australia.

 

4) Tata Group to set up EV battery factory in UK

  • In a major development, Tata Group has announced that it will establish a battery cell gigafactory in the UK.
  • Though Tata has far not revealed the size of the investment, a UK government statement billed it to be over 4 billion pounds (over £4 billion).
  • The new gigafactory, at 40GWh, will be one of the largest in Europe and will create up to 4,000 highly skilled jobs

 

5) Textiles ministry reopens PLI portal for MMF sector

  • The Ministry of Textiles has decided to re-open the performance-linked incentive (PLI) scheme portal till August 31 and has invited applications from companies interested in investing in man-made fibers (MMF) apparel, MMF fabrics, and technical textile sectors.
  • The ministry said in a press release that the decision was taken based on repeated requests from the industry.

 

6) Collegium recommends Manjusha Deshpande as Bombay High Court judge

  • The SC Collegium recommended the name of advocate Manjusha Ajay Deshpande for appointment as judge of the Bombay High Court,subject to the central government’s approval
  • At present, the HC functions with 66 judges, 40 permanent judges, and 26 additional judges
  • However, the sanctioned strength of the court, which is the second largest in the country after the Allahabad High Court, stands at 94
