1) World Bamboo Day: 18 September

  • World Bamboo Day is celebrated every year on September 18.
  • This day is celebrated globally to spread awareness about bamboo conservation & to promote the global bamboo industry.
  • The bamboo plant is known for being one of the fastest-growing plants in the world.
  • After China, India is the second largest cultivator of bamboo in the entire world.
  • World Bamboo Day was first celebrated in 2009.

 

2) India ranks fourth on Global Crypto Adoption Index 2022

  • India with an index score of 0.663, stood at 4th in the 2022 Global Crypto Adoption Index.
  • Vietnam is ranked first with an overall index ranking of 1.000.
  • In the 2021 edition of the index, India had stood at the second position, just behind Vietnam.
  • This index, published by crypto analysis firm Chainalysis, tracks countries adopting cryptocurrencies or investing in digital assets.

 

3) Mansukh Mandaviya launches 15-day ‘Raktdaan Amrit Mahotsav’

  • Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on 17 Sept 2022 launched a 15-day blood donation drive on the occasion of PM Modi’s birthday.
  • This drive has been called the ‘Raktdaan Amrit Mahotsav’ which will continue till 1 Oct 2022 which is also National Voluntary Blood Donation Day.
  • Over 87,000 people donated blood on the first day of the blood donation drive, which is a “world record”!

 

4) India takes over SCO rotating presidency, to host SCO summit in 2023

  • The rotational presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) was handed over to India in Samarkand, Uzbekistan on 16 Sept 2022.
  • India will hold the presidency of the grouping for a year until September 2023.
  • The next meeting of the SCO Council of Heads. of State will be held in 2023 in India.
  • Iran will also become a permanent member of SCO in 2023 under the presidency of India.

 

5) Bihar to introduce mandatory games period, ‘no-bag day’ in schools

  • The Bihar govt has decided to introduce a ‘no-bag day’ rule in schools along with a mandatory games period at least once a week in order to lighten the load on students.
  • ‘No-bag day’ will be devoted to practical and experiential learning.
  • This new initiative by the state government is in line with the National Education Policy 2020.

6) Andaman and Nicobar Islands declared India’s 1st Swachh Sujal Pradesh

  • Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has declared Andaman and Nicobar Islands as India’s first Swachh Sujal Pradesh.
  • Now, all villages of Andaman and Nicobar Island have been certified as Har Ghar Jal and verified as open defecation free.

7) J&K LG Manoj Sinha dedicates 120 feet tall National Flag to nation

  • Jammu and Kashmir, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha dedicated a 120 feet tall National Flag to the nation at Pulwama in South Kashmir on 18 September 2022.
  • He also laid the foundation stone for various youth-oriented projects in the district worth 9.11 crores rupees.
  • The new initiatives are aimed to empower the youth, enable self-development, and sharpen skills.

 

8) International Red Panda Day: 17 September

  • International Red Panda Day is celebrated every year on the third Saturday of September.
  • In 2022, this day falls on 17 Sept.
  • This day is commemorated to raise awareness about the red panda conservation issues.
  • Red pandas are native to the rainy mountain. forests of India, Nepal, Bhutan, northern Myanmar and central China.
  • This day was first celebrated in 2010.

 

9) Maharashtra to set up NITI Aayog-like institution

  • Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde has given in-principle nod to a proposal to set up an institution on the lines of NITI Aayog.
  • The institution would be set up for comprehensive data analysis and to make studied decisions on various sectors.
  • Set up in 2015, NITI Aayog serves as the apex public policy think tank of the central govt, & the nodal agency tasked with catalysing economic development.

 

10) Social Justice minister Virendra Kumar inaugurates 9 model DDRCS

  • Union Social Justice & Empowerment minister Virendra Kumar inaugurated 9 District Disability Rehabilitation Centres (DDRCs) on 18 Sept 2022.
  • The 9 DDRCS include: Badaun, Pilibhit, Barielly, Balaghat, Golaghat, Ahmedabad, Amravati, Kullu and Rampur.
  • In these DDRCs services like hearing aids test lab, speech therapy room & psychologist room will be available for Persons With Disability.

 

11) UNICEF appoints climate activist Vanessa Nakate as Goodwill Ambassador

  • 25-year-old Ugandan climate activist Vanessa Nakate has been appointed as the newest UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
  • She has been recognized by UNICEF for her outstanding global advocacy for climate justice for current and future generations.
  • Most recently, UNICEF appointed actress Millie Bobby Brown as its youngest-ever Goodwill Ambassador.

12) Tamil Nadu notifies Nanjarayan Tank as bird sanctuary

  • The Tamil Nadu govt issued an order to set up a bird sanctuary at Nanjarayan Tank in Tiruppur district in Sept 2022.
  • Nanjarayan Tank, spread in about 126 hectares of land in Tiruppur district, will be the 17th bird sanctuary in Tamil Nadu.
  • Earlier in Dec 2021, the state govt declared the Kazhuveli wetland located near Villupuram as the ‘Kazhuveli Birds Sanctuary!

13) Bajrang Punia wins bronze in 2022 World Wrestling Championships

  • Bajrang Punia on 18 Sept 2022 won the bronze medal in the men’s 65kg category at the World Wrestling Championships in Belgrade.
  • With this, Bajrang became the 1st Indian to win 4 medals at the world wrestling championships.
  • He defeated Puerto Rico’s Sebastian Rivera 11-9 to secure India’s second medal of the event.
  • Earlier on Sept 14, Vinesh Phogat won bronze in the women’s 53kg competition.

 

14) Sixth edition of the Japan-India Maritime Exercise ‘JIMEX’ concludes

  • The 6th edition of the Japan India Maritime Exercise ‘JIMEX’ hosted by the Indian Navy concluded in the Bay of Bengal on 17 Sept 2022.
  • This edition marked the 10th anniversary of JIMEX, which began in Japan in 2012.
  • The exercise, which commenced on 11 Sept, involved two Phases; exercises at sea and a harbour phase at Visakhapatnam.

 

15) Bengaluru FC lifts maiden Durand Cup by defeating Mumbai City FC

  • Bengaluru FC has won its maiden and the 131st edition of the Durand Cup by defeating Indian Super League (ISL) giants Mumbai City FC.
  • This is the seventh domestic title for Bengaluru FC.
  • The 2022 Durand Cup was played across three states for the first time.
  • A total of 47 matches were played across 3 cities: Kolkata, Guwahati & Imphal from 16th Aug to 18th Sept 2022.
