1) Greenko setting up world’s largest RE storage plant

  • Greenko Group is setting up the world’s largest renewable energy storage plant in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh.
  • The 5,230 megawatt (MW) project is being set up at a cost of USD 3 billion.
  • ArcelorMittal has put in around USD 600 million for the project.
  • Out of 5,230 MW, 3,000 MW is solar, 550 MW wind and 1,680 MW is pump storage capacity for 6 hours.

 

2) ICICI Lombard launches Professional Indemnity insurance for doctors

  • ICICI Lombard has launched professional indemnity insurance for doctors.
  • This policy has been curated to provide support to medical practitioners against the scope of various human errors that can happen while rendering professional services to patients.
  • Professional Indemnity insurance supports doctors both legally and financially in the event of a law suit, as per the company.

 

3) May 17 – World Hypertension Day

  • World Hypertension Day is celebrated on 17 May every year to create awareness about hypertension and its symptoms.
  • Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, occurs when the blood pressure rises to the level of 140/90.
  • World Hypertension Day (WHD) is a day designated and initiated by The World Hypertension League (WHL).
  • Over a billion people suffer from hypertension globally.

 

4) WPI-based inflation at 15.08% for the month of April 2022

  • The annual rate of inflation was 15.08% (Provisional) for the month of April 2022 (Y-o-Y) as compared to 10.74% in April 2021.
  • The rate of inflation based on WPI Food Index increased marginally from 8.71% in March 2022 to 8.88% in April 2022.
  • The high rate of inflation in April 2022 was primarily due to rise in prices of mineral oils, basic metals, crude petroleum and natural gas, etc.

 

5) Ajay Piramal receives top British honorary award

  • Piramal Group chairman Ajay Gopikisan Piramal received an honorary commander of the order of the British Empire (CBE) by Queen Elizabeth on 17 May 2022.
  • Mr Piramal received the award for services to the U.K.-India trade relationship as India co-chair of the U.K.-India CEO Forum.
  • Ajay Piramal (66) is an Indian billionaire industrialist and the chairman of the Piramal Group.

 

6) Cannes Film Festival opens in France on 17 May 2022

  • The 75th Cannes Film festival 2022 opened in France on 17 May 2022 and will continue till May 28.
  • India is the official country of Honour in this edition of the festival.
  • This is the first time that this honour has been bestowed on any country.
  • A cinema hall called the Olympia Screen has been dedicated to India on the 22 May for screening of unreleased movies.

 

7) President Ram Nath Kovind on a four-day visit to Jamaica

  • President Ram Nath Kovind is on a four-day visit to Jamaica from 16 May 2022.
  • It is the first-ever visit by an Indian President to Jamaica.
  • President Kovind also inaugurated “Ambedkar avenue”, a road named after Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar on 17 May 2022.
  • He will also inaugurate the Jamaica-India friendship garden.

 

8) Vedanta, NHAI ink contract to build roads with fly-ash in Odisha

  • Vedanta Aluminium has entered a long-term contract with NHAI (National Highways Authority of India) to construct greener roads with fly-ash in Odisha.
  • Fly-ash, which is a by-product of thermal power generation using coal, finds usage in the cement, construction and infrastructure industries.
  • Every tonne of fly-ash can help save around 700-800 kg of carbon emissions and 341 litres of water.

 

9) South Korea won the Uber Cup 2022

  • South Korea dethroned China as the Uber Cup champions with a stunning 3-2 victory in the final at the Impact Arena, Bangkok, Thailand.
  • In the deciding singles match, Korea’s 46th-ranked Sim Yu-jin faced China’s 15th-ranked Wang Zhiyi.
  • Sim beat Wang in an hour and 28-minute match.
  • The Uber Cup is a major international badminton competition contested by women’s national badminton teams.

10) Elisabeth Borne appointed as France’s new Prime Minister

  • Elisabeth Borne was appointed France’s new PM on 16 May 2022.
  • She became only the second woman in history to hold the post.
  • Borne, the Labor Minister in French President Emmanuel Macron’s previous government succeeds Jean Castex.
  • She also served as France’s Transport Minister in 2018.
  • She became CEO in 2015 of the state-owned transport company RATP, which operates the Paris metro.

 

11) India’s Sift Kaur Samra bags gold at ISSF Junior World Cup

  • India’s Sift Kaur Samra won the individual women’s 50m rifle 3 positions (3P) event to take India’s gold medal tally to 10 at the ISSF Junior World Cup 2022 in Suhl, Germany on 16 May 2022.
  • Sift Kaur Samra beat Norway’s Julie Johannessen 17-9 in the final.
  • India’s Ashi Chouksey also won bronze in the event.
  • India now has a total of 25 medals – 10 gold, 12 silver, and 3 bronze.

 

12) May 17 – World Telecommunication and Information Society Day

  • May 17 is celebrated as World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, commemorating the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the founding of the ITU.
  • It is observed every year to raise awareness of the benefits of the Internet and information and communication technologies.
  • This year’s theme is – Digital Technologies For Older Persons And Healthy Ageing.

 

13) RBI appoints two new executive directors

  • The Reserve Bank of India has appointed Dr Rajiv Ranjan and Dr Sitikantha Pattanaik as Executive Directors (EDS).
  • As Executive Director, Dr Ranjan will look after the Monetary Policy Department (MPD).
  • Dr Pattanaik will look after the Department of Economic and Policy Research (DEPR).

 

14) Italian Open: Novak Djokovic wins maiden title in 2022

  • World No. 1 Novak Djokovic defeated Stefanos Tsistsipas in straight games in the Italian Open final to clinch his sixth title in Rome.
  • Djokovic defeated Tsitsipas 6-0, 7-6 to win Italian Open crown.
  • It was Djokovic’s first title in over 6 months.
  • It was also Novak Djokovic’s record-extending 38th Masters 1000 victory.

 

15) Tata Power partners with Hyundai Motor for EV charging infra in India

  • Tata Power has entered into a strategic partnership with Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL).
  • It will build a robust EV charging network and accelerate the adoption of EVS across India.
  • Under the partnership, Tata Power will install Tata Power EZ Charge fast chargers (DC 60 kW) at HMIL’s existing 34 EV dealer locations across 29 cities.

 

16) Rajnath Singh launches indigenous Navy destroyer warship INS Surat

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on 17 May 2022 launched two frontline warships of the Indian Navy at Mazgaon Docks Limited (MDL) in Mumbai.
  • These are INS Surat, a Project 15B destroyer, and INS Udaygiri, a Project 17A frigate.
  • The warships have been designed at the Directorate of Naval Design (DND) and built entirely at MDL as part of Atmanirbhar Bharat mission.

 

17) BSE appoints SS Mundra as Chairman

  • Stock exchange BSE has approved the appointment of S. S. Mundra, Public Interest Director as the Chairman of the board of directors of the company, subject to the approval of SEBI.
  • He retired as Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of India on 30 July 2017 after completing a stint of three years.
  • Prior to that, the last position held by him was as Chairman and Managing Director of Bank of Baroda.

 

18) Second phase of “Suposhit Maa Abhiyan” launched on 17 May.

  • Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla launched the second phase of “Suposhit Maa Abhiyan” in Kota, Rajasthan on 17 May.
  • In the campaign, 3 thousand women will be given nutrition kits for 9 months with the help of public support and a health check-up will be done every month.
  • It’s a campaign to create a malnutrition-free India and it was launched on March 1, 2020, in Kota, Rajasthan.

 

19) Naveen Srivastava appointed as new envoy to Nepal

  • India on May 17, announced the appointment of Naveen Srivastava as the next ambassador to Nepal.
  • He is currently an additional secretary in the external affairs ministry.
  • Srivastava will succeed Vinay Kwatra, who became foreign secretary this month, as the envoy to Kathmandu.
  • Srivastava joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1993.

 

20) Odisha wins Hockey India Senior Women National Championship 2022

  • Odisha was crowned as the Champions of the 12th Hockey India Senior Women National Championship 2022 in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
  • The final match was a closely contested affair between Karnataka and Odisha but Odisha defeated Karnataka by 2-0.
  • Jharkhand beat Haryana by 3-2 to earn a third-place finish.
