2) Today’s History: 19 June 2023

  • Husband and wife Julius and Ethel Rosenberg in 1953, becoming the first American civilians to be executed for espionage.
  • The Cleveland Cavaliers, led by star LeBron James, defeated the Golden State Warriors in a thrilling game seven to claim the franchise’s first NBA title.
  • Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman to travel in space, returned to Earth in the spacecraft Vostok 6.

 

3) Indian men’s Football team won Intercontinental Cup in Bhubaneshwar

  • Indian men’s senior football team clinched the Intercontinental Cup with a 2-0 victory over Lebanon in the final at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneshwar.
  • This is India’s second title in the tournament, following their win in the inaugural edition in 2018. Korea won in 2019.
  • Indian captain Sunil Chhetri and Lallianzuala Chhangte netted the goal for India.

 

4) Gita Press, Gorakhpur, awarded Gandhi Peace Prize for 2021

  • The Gandhi Peace Prize for 2021 will be conferred on Gita Press, Gorakhpur, one of the largest publishers of religious texts such as the Bhagavad Gita, the Ramayana and the Upanishads.
  • The decision to confer the award on Gita Press was taken by a jury headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

6) Nusrat Jahan Choudhury, first Muslim woman to be federal judge

  • The US Senate has confirmed the former American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) attorney Nusrat Jahan Choudhury as the first Muslim woman to serve as a federal judge.
  • Choudhury, 46, is also the first Bangladeshi American to serve in this lifetime position.
  • She will serve as a judge on the US court for the eastern district of New York.

 

7) Daniel Ellsberg, Pentagon Papers whistleblower, dies aged 92

  • Daniel Ellsberg, the U.S. military analyst whose change of heart on the Vietnam War led him to leak the classified “Pentagon Papers,” revealing U.S. government deception about the war and setting off a major freedom-of-the-press battle, died at the age of 92.
  • Ellsberg, who had been diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer in February, died at his home in Kensington, California.

 

8) Abhishek Verma clinches individual gold in archery World Cup Stage 3

  • Abhishek Verma added a gold medal to India’s tally by clinching the top prize in the men’s compound individual final at the World Cup Stage 3.
  • Abhishek, winner of the compound team gold and an individual silver at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, defeated James Lutz of USA 148-146.
  • This is Abhishek’s third individual World Cup gold, and his first since the 2021 Paris leg.

 

9) Unique space telescope designed by Pune scientists

  • The Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT), a unique space telescope developed by Pune’s Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA).
  • The telescope is set to be integrated with the ADITYA-L1 mission, expected to be launched in mid-August this year.
  • ADITYA-L1 will be ISRO’s first space observatory dedicated to studying the Sun.

 

10) SpaceX launches SATRIA-1 communications satellite for Indonesia

  • A Falcon 9 rocket topped with the SATRIA-1 telecommunications satellite lifted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
  • SATRIA-1 (whose name is short for “Satellite of the Republic of Indonesia”) will be operated for the Indonesian government by the Indonesian company PSN.

 

11) Defence ministry approves to acquire 31 MQ-9B armed drones from US

  • India’s defence ministry approved the acquisition of 31 MQ-9B armed drones from the US.
  • India is expected to buy the drones, which have an endurance of more than 27 hours and can operate at up to 50,000 feet, in a deal worth a little more than $3 billion.
  • Fifteen drones will be for the navy, and eight each for the army and the air force.

13) IPS officer Ravi Sinha appointed RAW chief

  • Senior IPS officer Ravi Sinha appointed as the new chief of India’s external intelligence agency RAW.
  • Sinha, a 1988 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Chhattisgarh cadre,is currently serving as Special Secretary, Cabinet Secretariat.
  • Sinha replaces Samant Kumar Goel, who will complete his tenure on June 30, 2023.
