1) Know about: Periyar River
- Periyar River is also named as “Lifeline Of Kerala”
- Periyar River, river in southern Kerala state.
- The river is 140 miles (225 km) long.
- Periyar arises from the Sivagiri peaks of Sundaramala, in Tamil Nadu.
- Periyar Tiger Reserve, Periyar lake, Mulliyarpriyar dam, and Iddukai Dam are some important locations on the bank of the river.
- Kerala’s Hydroelectric power depends on the Iddukai dam
2) Arvind Kejriwal launches ‘Make India No. 1’ mission
- Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal on 17 August 2022 announced ‘Make India No. 1’ mission.
- It was launched at Delhi’s Talkatora Stadium.
- It will focus on health, education, agriculture, and employment.
- He will travel across the country as part of the mission to encourage people to join the initiative and achieve its objectives.
3) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh unveils statue of Durgadas Rathore
- Defence Minister Rajnath Singh unveiled of statue of renowned Marwari warrior Veer Durgadas Rathore in Jodhpur, Rajasthan in August 2022.
- It was unveiled on the occasion of his 385th birth anniversary.
- He was the Rathore Rajput General of Kingdom of Marwar.
- He single-handedly preserved the rule of the Rathore dynasty over Marwar after the death of Maharaja Jaswant Singh in the 17th century.
4) Karnataka government to provide 2 percent reservation to sportspersons
- Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai has announced that the government will provide two percent reservation to sportspersons in all state departments.
- Currently, the state provides reservation. to sportspersons in the police and forest. department on the lines of existing quota.
- He also felicitated 75 sports persons who have been selected under the ‘Amrit Kreeda Dattu’ scheme.
5) Death anniversary of freedom fighter Madan Lal Dhingra: 17 August
- 17 August marks the death anniversary of freedom fighter Madan Lal Dhingra.
- He was influenced by Shyamji Krishna Verma and VD Savarkar.
- On 1st July, 1909, Dhingra shot dead the British police officer Curzon Wyllie in a public gathering.
- He was immediately arrested and sentenced to death.
- He was executed at Pentonville Prison on 17 August 1909.
6) 9th India-Thailand Joint Commission Meeting held in Bangkok
- The 9th India-Thailand Joint Commission Meeting was held in Bangkok on 17 August 2022.
- The meeting was co-chaired by Deputy PM and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand Don Pramudwinai, and Minister of External Affairs of India, Dr S Jaishankar.
- Both the countries are celebrating 75 years of establishment of diplomatic relations.
7) Gurdeep Randhawa: 1st representative of Indian community in Germany
- Indian-born entrepreneur Gurdeep Singh Randhawa has been elected as the first representative of the Indian community in Germany.
- He has been tasked to make concerns of the Indian community heard & also to encourage them to become politically active.
- Randhawa is a member of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU).
- CDU is Germany’s strongest political party, headed by Friedrich Merz.
8) Sikkim CM launches women’s welfare schemes on Independence Day
- Sikkim Chief Minister P S Tamang on 15 August 2022 launched 2 schemes, ‘Aama Yojana’ & ‘Vatsalya Yojana’ for the welfare of women of the state.
- Under Aama Yojana all unemployed mothers in the state will receive Rs 20,000 annually which will be deposited in their bank accounts.
- Under Vatsalya Yojana an aid of Rs 3 lakh will be provided to childless women for in vitro fertilization treatment.
9) Former BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary passes away
- Amitabh Choudhary, the former BCCI acting secretary and ex-president of Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) passed away on 16 August 2022 at the age of 58.
- He played a crucial role in developing infrastructure for Jharkhand cricket.
- He assumed the role of India men’s team manager on several tours.
- He also held the position of chairman of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission.
10) William Ruto declared winner of Kenyan presidential election
- In Kenya, Deputy President William Ruto has been declared the winner of Kenya’s presidential election.
- He narrowly defeated his rival, Raila Odinga, taking 50.5 per cent of the vote.
- This was the first time Mr Ruto had run for president.
- He has served as deputy president for 10 years.
- Mr Ruto will succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.

11) Govt extends tenure of DCGI chief VG Somani by three months
- Union govt has extended the tenure of Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) VG Somani by 3 months.
- His term was set to end on 14 August 2022.
- In 2019, the government appointed Dr Somani as DCGI for a period of three years to head India’s apex drug regulatory agency Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO).
- Dr Somani played a key role in the approval of Covid-19 vaccines.
