1) Telangana govt announces DICRA in partnership with UNDP

  • The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has partnered with Telangana for Data in Climate Resilient Agriculture (DICRA).
  • DICRA is a first-of-its-kind digital solution that aims to strengthen food systems and food security by the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.
  • DICRA will help farmers mitigate the effects of climate change on their crops and livestock.

 

2) Tata Steel to invest ₹12,000 crore in FY23 in India and Europe

  • Tata Steel plans to invest ₹8,500 crore in India and ₹3,500 crore on the company’s operations in Europe in FY23.
  • In India, the focus will be on the Kalinganagar project expansion and mining activity.
  • The company is expanding the capacity of its plant in Kalinganagar, Odisha from 3 MT to 8 MT.
  • Tata Steel recently also spent 12,100 crore on the acquisition of Odisha based steel mill NINL.

 

3) Tokyo to host 2025 World Athletics Championships

  • Tokyo has been selected as the host city for the 2025 World Athletics Championships.
  • Budapest will host the 2023 edition.
  • World Athletics Championships are a biennial athletics competition organized by World Athletics.
  • The 2022 edition is currently being organised in Oregon, USA, which was originally scheduled to be held in 2021 but postponed by one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

4) Kerala becomes first state to have its own internet service

  • Kerala has announced that it has become the first and only state in the country to have its own internet service.
  • It was announced when the Kerala Fiber Optic Network Ltd (KFON) received the Internet Service Provider (ISP) license from the Dept of Telecommunications.
  • KFON scheme is envisaged to provide free internet to BPL families & 30,000 govt offices in the state.
  • It was launched in 2019

 

5) Rajkiran Rai G. to head newly formed NaBFID

  • Financial Services Institutions Bureau (FSIB) has recommended Rajkiran Rai G. for the position of managing director in the newly formed National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID).
  • Rai is the former chairman of Union Bank of India.
  • This is the first selection made by the FSIB following its incorporation on 1 July 2022.
  • Banks Board Bureau (BBB) was revamped into FSIB.

 

6) IndiGo appoints M Damodaran as non-independent non-executive director

  • Interglobe Aviation, the parent company of private airline IndiGo, on 16 July 2022 appointed Meleveetil Damodaran as Non-Independent Non Executive Director.
  • M. Damodaran is a retired IAS officer.
  • He was the Chairman of Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) from 2005 to 2008.
  • He is widely acknowledged as one of India’s foremost champions of Corporate Governance.

 

7) Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa wins Paracin Open Chess title

  • Young Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa on 16 July 2022 won the Open A section of the 15th International Chess Open Paracin held in the town of Paracin in Serbia.
  • He scored 8 points from nine rounds.
  • Alexandr Predke (Russian) took the second spot with 7.5 points.
  • Praggnanandhaa will also be part of India ‘B’ team in the 44th Chess Olympiad to be held near Chennai from 28 July 2022.

 

8) British govt launches “Aviation Passenger Charter”

  • The British government launched an “Aviation Passenger Charter” on 17 July 2022 to help passengers know their rights if they are faced with problems at airports.
  • The new charter will help passengers know what to do if they are confronted by cancellations, delays or missing baggage.
  • It has been developed by the British government, in partnership with the aviation sector & travel industry.

 

9) PM Modi inaugurates 296-km Bundelkhand Expressway in UP

  • PM Modi on 16 July 2022 inaugurated the Bundelkhand Expressway in the Jalaun district of Uttar Pradesh.
  • The 296 km 4-lane expressway has been constructed at a cost of around 14,850 crores.
  • It will link the Bundelkhand area to Delhi through the Agra-Lucknow Expressway and Yamuna Expressway.
  • It has been constructed by Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA).

 

10) Ashish Kumar Chauhan appointed as the next MD & CEO of NSE

  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has appointed Ashish Kumar Chauhan as the new MD and CEO of the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
  • He will succeed Vikram Limaye whose 5-year term ended on 16 July 2022.
  • Mr Chauhan is currently the MD & CEO of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).
  • He is known as the ‘father of India’s financial derivatives!
  • He is one of the founders of the NSE.

 

11) PV Sindhu wins 2022 Singapore Open Badminton title

  • Indian shuttler PV Sindhu clinched her maiden Women’s Single title of the Singapore Open Badminton tournament on 17 July 2022.
  • She defeated Wang Zhi Yi of China in the final of the 2022 Singapore Open.
  • Sindhu has won three titles in 2022 – the Swiss Open, Syed Modi India International, and now the Singapore Open.

 

12) Kotak Mahindra Bank becomes first to integrate with new IT portal

  • Kotak Mahindra Bank has completed technical integration with the new e-filing portal of the Income Tax (IT) department.
  • After this, it has become the first private bank to fully integrate with this portal.
  • Its customers can now pay their direct taxes through the e-pay tax tab on the portal using Kotak net banking or by visiting a branch.

13) Murali Sreeshankar: first Indian to enter men’s long jump final at WAC

  • Murali Sreeshankar became the first Indian to enter the men’s long jump final at the World Athletics Championships (WAC) on 16 July 2022.
  • He leapt 8m & finished second in the qualification round at the ongoing WAC in Oregon, USA.
  • Anju Bobby George was the first Indian to make it to the World Championships long jump finals and the first to win a medal – bronze in the 2003 edition in Paris.

 

14) RBI & Bank Indonesia sign MoU to expand cooperation in payment system

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) & Bank Indonesia (BI) on 16 July 2022 signed an MoU to expand cooperation in payment systems, digital financial innovation and anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism (AML-CFT).
  • The MoU was signed on the sidelines of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting in Bali, Indonesia.

15) Aishwary Tomar wins gold at ISSF Shooting World Cup in Changwon

  • Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar has won a gold medal in the Men’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions (3P) event in the ongoing International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup in Changwon, Korea.
  • He defeated Hungarian Zakan Pekler in the gold medal match.
  • This was the Aishwary’s second ISSF World Cup gold.
  • India currently leads the medal tally with four gold, four silver and one bronze medal so far.

 

16) Centre extends RoSCTL scheme till March 31, 2024

  • The Centre has extended the Scheme for Rebate of State and Central Taxes and Levies (ROSCTL) till March 2024 to boost exports and job creation in the textile sector.
  • After this decision, the rates of exports of apparel and garments will continue the same as earlier.
  • After the introduction of GST in 2017, the ROSL (Rebate of State Levies) scheme was replaced by a new scheme RoSCTL in 2019.

 

17) INS Sindhudhvaj decommissioned after 35 years of service to nation

  • The Indian Navy’s Kilo-class submarine, INS Sindhudhvaj was decommissioned from service on 16 July 2022 after 35 years in service.
  • Commissioned into the Navy in 1987, Sindhudhvaj, was one of the 10 Kilo-class submarines India acquired from Russia between 1986 and 2000.
  • It was the only submarine to be awarded the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) rolling trophy for Innovation by PM Modi.

 

18) Pre-packed food items to attract 5% GST from 18 July

  • The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs clarified on Sunday single packages of food items like cereals, pulses and flour weighing up to 25 kg will be considered as ‘prepackaged and labelled’, liable to 5% GST from July 18.
  • If a retail shopkeeper supplies in loose quantity the item bought from a manufacturer or distributor in a 25 kg pack, such sale to consumers will not attract GST.

 

19) World Day for International Justice: 17 July

  • July 17 is observed as the World Day for International Justice all around the world.
  • The day is observed every year to back and promote those people, who voice their support for the rights of the victims and against injustice.
  • This day marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute in 1998.
  • The theme for 2022 is “Achieving Social Justice through Formal Employment”
