1) PM Narendra Modi to visit Lumbini, Nepal on 16 May 2022
- PM Modi will be visiting Lumbini, Nepal on 16 May 2022 at the invitation of the Rt Hon’ble Sher Bahadur Deuba, Prime Minister of Nepal.
- He will offer prayers at the Mayadevi Temple on the auspicious occasion of Buddha Jayanti.
- He will be participating in the “Shilanyas” ceremony of the India International Centre for Buddhist Culture and Heritage in the Lumbini Monastic Zone.
2) India wins first Thomas Cup title, beats Indonesia 3-0
- India won its maiden Thomas Cup title on 15 May 2022, beating 14-time champion Indonesia 3-0 in the final in Bangkok.
- World championships bronze medallist Lakshya Sen defeated Indonesia’s Anthony Sinisuka Ginting 8-21, 21-17, 21-16 in the first men’s singles to give India a 1-0 lead.
- India had previously reached the semifinals of the Thomas Cup in 1952, 1955, and 1979.
3) SpaceX launches Starlink satellites from California
- SpaceX rocket carried 53 satellites for the Starlink internet constellation into orbit on 13 May 2022 after blasting off from California.
- The Falcon 9 booster lifted off from the Vandenberg Space Force Base.
- Starlink is a space-based system that SpaceX has been building for years to bring internet access to underserved areas of the world.
4) Ram Baboo Prasad takes over as new Director (Technical) of CCL
- Ram Baboo Prasad has taken over as new Director (technical) of Central Coalfields Ltd (CCL) on 14 May 2022.
- The post of Director (Technical) was vacant after Bhola Singh joined Northern Coalfields Ltd (NCL) as Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) on Jan 1, 2022.
- Prior to assuming the post, Jharkhand-based subsidiary of Coal India Ltd Ram Baboo was working as General Manager (mining) in NCL.
5) Department of Telecommunication launches “GatiShakti Sanchar” portal
- Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Communications, Electronics and IT and Railways launched the “GatiShakti Sanchar” portal for Centralised Right of Way approvals on 14 May’22.
- The portal has been developed by MP State Electronics Development Corporation.
- The portal will enable applicants from various Telecom Service providers (TSPS) to apply at a common single portal.
6) Amit Shah opens National Cyber Forensic Lab in Hyderabad
- Union Home Minister Amit Shah on 14 May 2022 inaugurated the ‘National Cyber Forensic Laboratory’ (NCFL) at Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) campus in Hyderabad.
- The NCFL will speed up the process for disposal of cybercrime cases in the country.
- The lab has been set up under the Cyber and Information Security Division MHA at an estimated cost of about 35.51 crore rupees.
7) NTPC begins commercial operation of first part of 56 MW Kawas project
- NTPC has commenced commercial operation of the first part capacity of its 56 MW Kawas Solar PV Project with effect from 14 May 2022 onwards.
- With this commercial operation, NTPC’s standalone installed and commercial capacity has become 54616.68 MW.
- Further, the group installed and commercial capacity of NTPC has become 68981.68 and 68321.68 MW respectively.
8) Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh top in GST registrations
- Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh have topped in Goods and Services Tax registrations by businesses and dealers followed by Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.
- Maharashtra has 1.48 million normal GST payers who pay taxes on a monthly basis, while Uttar Pradesh has 1.33 million such taxpayers.
- Gujarat has 1.09 million normal and composition. taxpayers, while Tamil Nadu has 1.06 million GST registrations.
9) Egypt to buy 500,000 tonnes of wheat from India
- Egypt’s government has agreed to buy half a million tonnes of wheat from India.
- Egypt, one of the world’s biggest wheat importers, is looking for alternatives to Black Sea grain exports which face disruptions caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, both major wheat exporters to Egypt.
- Egypt has four months’ worth of strategic reserves and six months of vegetable oils.
10) International Day of Families: 15 May
- International Day of Families is observed each year on 15th May.
- It is celebrated majorly to highlight the significance of the family as well its value.
- In 1993, the General Assembly decided that May 15 will be observed as The International Day of Families every year.
- The theme for International Day of Families 2022 is “Families and Urbanization”.

11) Former Australian cricketer Andrew Symonds passes away
- Former Australia cricketer and two-time World Cup winner Andrew Symonds passed away in May 2022.
- He featured in 198 ODIs scoring six centuries and 30 half-centuries while also contributing 133 wickets with his more than handy off-spin and medium pace.
- Symonds also played 14 T201 for Australia, managing 337 runs and eight wickets.
12) Chhattisgarh becomes first state to restore old pension scheme
- Chhattisgarh has become the first state to restore the old pension scheme in order to provide assured income to retired employees.
- The state govt has sent a proposal to the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority for the withdrawal of Rs 17,000 crore accrued under the National Pension Scheme since Nov 2004.
- The old pension scheme gives 50% of the employee’s salary as a pension.
13) Adani group to buy Ambuja Cements, ACC for $10.5 bn from Holcim
- Gautam Adani has won the race to acquire Swiss cement major Holcim’s stake in Ambuja Cements and its subsidiary ACC for $10.5 bn (around Rs 81,361 cr), including the open offers.
- Holcim owns 63.19% in Ambuja Cement and 4.48% in ACC.
- Ambuja Cement, in turn, owns 50.05% of ACC.
- The Adani family will make an open offer to buy 26% in these two companies from non-promoter shareholders.

14) Buddha Purnima: 16 May 2022
- Also known as Buddha Jayanti or Vaisakhi Buddha Purnima or Vesak, the festival of Buddha Purnima marks the birth of Gautama Buddha.
- He attained enlightenment under the shade of the Bodhi tree and became Gautama Buddha at Bodh Gaya also on the full moon day of May.
- After 45 years of teaching the Truth, when he was eighty, at Kusinara, he passed away to Nibbana, the cessation of all desire.
15) Vietnam opens 2,000 feet glass-bottomed bridge
- Suspended nearly 500 ft. off the ground, Vietnam has opened a glass-bottomed bridge that is said to be the longest in the world.
- Stretching for about 2000 feet, the Bach Long bridge, meaning ‘the white dragon, connects two mountains and hangs over a valley in Vietnam’s Northwest Son La Province.
- The white pedestrian bridge can support up to 450 people at a time.
