1) Government forms new panel to review all official data
- The Indian government has established a new internal oversight mechanism for official data, replacing the Standing Committee on Economic Statistics (SCOS) with a broader mandate.
- It has 10 official members and four non-official members.
- Pronab Sen, India’s first chief statistician and former chairman of the National Statistical Commission (NSC), has been named the chair of the new committee.
2) Himachal CM Sukhu launches website of Aapda Rahat Kosh-2023
- A digital platform called Aapda Rahat Kosh-2023 was launched by Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to aid disaster-affected people in the region.
- The platform allows individuals to donate money using various payment methods such as debit card, credit card, and UPI.
- The platform aims to facilitate seamless transactions by integrating with multiple payment gateways.
3) S. Jaishankar co-chairs 12th Mekong Ganga Cooperation meeting
- External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar co-chaired the 12th Mekong-Ganga Cooperation (MGC) meeting in Bangkok with his Laos counterpart Saleumxay Kommasith.
- The implementation of the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway was prioritized, and a Mekong-Ganga Cooperation Business Council was established.
- India has proposed to extend the road to Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.

- The age gap between him and Djokovic is the widest in any men’s Slam final since 1974.
- The match lasted more than 4 1/2 hours and Alcaraz won a 32-points.
7) Jane Birkin, inspiration for famous Hermes’ Birkin bag, passes away
- Jane Birkin, the actress and singer, passed away on 16 July 2023.
- She popularized the iconic “Birkin Bag,” named after her, which is a luxury handbag made by Hermès.
- She was born in London in 1946, the daughter of British actress Judy Campbell and Royal Navy commander David Birkin.
- In 2001, Birkin was awarded the Order of the British Empire.
8) India-Mongolia to commence joint military exercise ‘Nomadic Elephant’
- India-Mongolia to commence joint military exercise ‘Nomadic Elephant’ 2023 on 17 July 2023.
- The exercise is the 15th edition of the annual training event between India and Mongolia.
- The exercise will focus on counter-terrorism operations in mountainous terrain under a United Nations mandate.
- The exercise will be held at Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia from July 17-31.
9) Google honours Indo-American artist Zarina Hashmi on her 86th birthday
- Google Doodle honors Indian American artist Zarina Hashmi on her 86th birthday.
- Hashmi’s artwork employed abstract and geometric forms to evoke a spiritual experience in viewers.
- She was born in Aligarh, India, and experienced the tragedy of the partition of India.
- Hashmi’s artwork has been included in permanent collections at the San Francisco Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
10) Adani Group commissions India’s first transnational power project
- Gautam Adani met Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina for full load commencement and handover of 1,600 MW ultra supercritical Godda power plant.
- Adani Power set up the thermal power plant in Jharkhand’s Godda to supply power to Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB).
- The Godda Plant became fully operational in June.
- The plant was commissioned in a record time of three-and-a-half years.
11) Vondrousova becomes first unseeded woman to win Wimbledon
- Marketa Vondrousova won the 2023 Wimbledon women’s singles title, becoming the first unseeded player in the Open Era to do so.
- Vondrousova defeated No.6 seed Ons Jabeur in straight sets in the final.
- Vondrousova’s win marks her maiden Grand Slam title and makes her the fifth left-handed player to win the women’s singles title at Wimbledon in the Open Era.
