1) World Migratory Bird Day: 14 May 2022
- World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) is observed on the second Saturday in May and the second Saturday in October.
- For 2022, it is being observed on May 14 and October 8.
- The day raises awareness about the problems that migratory birds face.
- “Impact of Light Pollution on Migratory Birds” is the theme of the campaign for 2022.
- The day began in 2006 by the United Nations. (UN).
2) Scientists successfully grow plants in moon soil for first time
- Scientists for the first time have grown seeds in the soil from the moon.
- The samples retrieved during NASA missions in 1969 and 1972.
- On May 12, 2022, they planted seeds of a diminutive flowering weed called Arabidopsis thaliana in 12 small thimble-sized containers each bearing a gram of moon soil, more properly called lunar regolith, and watched as they sprouted and grew.
3) Inter Milan clinch Italian Cup with 4-2 victory over Juventus in final
- Inter Milan was crowned the 2022 Italian Cup champions after beating Juventus 4-2 in the final on 12 May 2022.
- This was their eighth Italian Cup.
- Nicolo Barella scored an early opener for Inter Milan before Juventus took a 2-1 lead with goals scored by Alex Sandro and Dusan Vlahovic.
- Inter lifted their first Coppa Italia since 2011.
4) Messi world’s highest-paid athlete on Forbes 2022 list
- Lionel Messi bagged $130 million to be the world’s highest-paid athlete in 2022 so far in Forbes magazine list.
- According to the Forbes list, Messi was followed by Los Angeles Lakers’ US superstar LeBron James, who earned $121.2 million.
- Manchester United’s Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo came third with $115 million, ahead of Messi’s Brazilian PSG teammate Neymar with $95 million.
5) India bans wheat exports with immediate effect
- Union Government has prohibited wheat export with immediate effect.
- Directorate General of Foreign Trade issued a notification in this regard on 13 May 2022.
- Amendment in the export policy of wheat has been done in order to manage the overall food security of the country and to support the needs of the neighbouring countries and other vulnerable countries.
6) Reliance top-ranked Indian firm on Forbes Global 2000 list
- Reliance Industries climbed two spots to No. 53 on Forbes’ latest Global 2000 list of public companies worldwide.
- Forbes Global 2000 ranks the largest companies in the world using four metrics: sales, profits, assets, and market value.
- Reliance is the top-ranked Indian firm on the list, followed by State Bank of India at no.105, HDFC Bank at no.153, and ICICI Bank at no. 204.
7) NTPC initiates Girl Empowerment Mission
- National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) has initiated the Girl Empowerment Mission for uplifting the lives of underprivileged girls living in different regions of the country.
- The four-week-long mission will provide every girl child essential education, health, and self-defence awareness.
- Under the programme, various activities like dance, music, and theatre will also be organized.
8) India’s import of crude oil touches record high in April
- India’s crude oil imports in April 2022 hit a record high.
- According to S&P Global Market Intelligence, India’s seaborne crude import surpassed 4.8 million barrels per day in April, out of which 5% was from Russia, up from below 1% in 2021 and Q1 2022.
- Iraq remained the top supplier, with a combined 1.2 million barrels a day.
9) President of India appoints 9 Advocates as Judges of Delhi High Court
- The President of India has appointed nine Advocates as Judges of the Delhi High Court.
- Tara Vitasta Ganju, Ms. Mini Pushkarna, Mr Vikas Mahajan, Mr Tushar Rao Gedela, Ms. Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora, Mr Sachin Datta, Mr Amit Mahajan, Mr Gaurang Kanth and Mr Saurabh Banerjee have been appointed as Judges of the Delhi High Court.
- The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended their names.
10) ISRO successfully tests human-rated HS-200 solid rocket booster
- ISRO successfully conducted the static test of a human-rated solid rocket booster HS-200, a key component for the Gaganyaan manned mission program, on 13 May 2022.
- The test was conducted at Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.
- HS-200 rocket booster is the human-rated version of the well proven S-200 rocket booster of GSLV Mark-Il satellite launch vehicle, popularly known as LVM3.
