1) Nomura lowers India’s GDP forecast for 2022-23 to 4.7%
- Nomura has sharply lowered India’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth forecast for 2023 to 4.7% from 5.4% estimated earlier on the back of the global economic slowdown, elevated inflation and rising interest rates.
- However, it maintained its growth projection for 2022 at 7.2%.
- As a result, Nomura now expects headline inflation in India to average 6.9% in 2022, and 5.9% in 2023.
2) Trade Deficit widens to a record $26.1 Billion in June
- India’s trade deficit widened to record $26.18 billion in June.
- While goods exports increased and exceeded $40.1 billion, imports outpaced, reaching $66.3 billion on account of higher purchases of coal, gold and petroleum products.
- Coal imports jumped almost fourfold to $6.76 billion while gold imports almost trebled to surpass $2.7 billion. Petroleum imports climbed 99.5% to $21.3 billion.
3) Vedanta partners with IIT Madras incubated start-up
- Vedanta has teamed up with Detect Technologies, an IIT Madras-incubated startup.
- It will implement safety incident detection by deploying T-Pulse HSSE Monitoring System, based on artificial intelligence (AI), across all its business units.
- T-Pulse offers centralised and scalable technology stack designed for plug-and-play deployment.
4) Gujarat man found with unique blood group; first in India
- A man in Gujarat, who passed away during the course of treatment, has been identified with a unique blood group.
- It is said to be the first in the country and 10th in the world.
- It took a year for the researchers to come to the conclusion that the blood group was AB+ blood group with EMM ‘negative’ frequency.
- O, A, B and AB are the common blood groups found in human bodies.
5) India & Madagascar sign MoU on tele-education
- An MoU was signed between the Madagascar govt and Telecommunications Consultants India Limited (TCIL) on 12 July 2022.
- It was signed for the participation of Madagascar in the e-VBAB (e-Vidya Bharati and e-Aarogya Bharati) network project.
- Under this agreement, various online degree or diploma courses will be offered to the citizens of Madagascar, free of cost through e-VBAB project.
6) Quantum Mutual Fund launches India’s first Nifty 50 ETF Fund of Fund
- Quantum Mutual Fund (MF) has launched Quantum Nifty 50 ETF Fund of Fund.
- It is an open-ended fund of fund scheme investing in units of Quantum Nifty 50 ETF.
- It is India’s first of its kind Nifty 50 ETF Fund of Fund (FOF).
- The New Fund Offer (NFO) will open on July 18, 2022 and close on August 1, 2022.
7) India’s first Monkeypox case reported in Kerala
- The first case of monkeypox was confirmed in India on 14 July 2022, after a person who had returned to Kerala from UAE developed symptoms of the disease.
- His samples were sent to National Virology Institute in Pune which confirmed the disease by 14 July evening.
- Monkeypox is a viral zoonotic disease with symptoms similar to smallpox.
- It was first found in monkeys in 1958.
8) India’s NSCS hosts meeting of BIMSTEC on cyber security cooperation
- A 2-day meeting of the BIMSTEC Expert Group on Cyber Security Cooperation began in New Delhi on 14 July 2022.
- It is being organized by the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS).
- It is being chaired by National Cyber Security Coordinator Lt General Rajesh Pant.
- In the meeting, the expert group will formulate an action plan to deal with Cyber Security challenges in the BIMSTEC region.
9) Book titled “The McMahon line: A century of discord” released
- A book titled “The McMahon line: A century of discord”, was released on 12 July 2022.
- It has been authored by former Governor of Arunachal Pradesh and former Chief of Army Staff General JJ Singh (Retd).
- The book is based on the former Army chief’s experiences and research on the India-China border dispute.
- A short film related to the McMahon line was also screened.
10) India tops ISSF Shooting World Cup 2022 medal tally
- India topped the medal tally at the ongoing ISSF Shooting World Cup at Changwon in South Korea on 14 July 2022.
- India finished the tournament with 8 medals including 3 gold, 4 silver & 1 bronze.
- The troika of Arjun Babuta, Shahu Tushar Mane & Paarth Makhija helped India bag its third gold medal on 14 July 2022 by beating Korea in the 10-metre air rifle team event.
11) Narendra Tomar launches e-NAM Platform to promote agricultural trade
- Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar on 14 July 2022 launched the Platform of Platforms (POP) under the National Agriculture Market (e-NAM).
- It was launched on the sidelines of the State Agriculture and Horticulture Ministers’ Conference in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
- With the introduction of POP, farmers will be facilitated to sell the produce outside their state borders.
12) UAE to invest $2 bn to develop integrated food parks across India
- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will invest $2 bn to develop a series of integrated food parks across India.
- This decision was announced during the first virtual summit of the ’12U2′ (India, Israel, US and UAE) group, held on 14 July 2022.
- The investments from UAE will help maximise crop yields and, in turn, help tackle food insecurity in South Asia & Middle East.
13) India’s wholesale inflation eases to 15.18% in June
- India’s wholesale price-based inflation eased to 15.18% in June 2022 on a year-on-year basis from 15.88% in May, according to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
- For the fuel and power segment, the WPI number marginally eased to 40.38% in June from 40.62% in May as oil prices eased.
- Food inflation for June climbed to 12.41% as against 10.89% in the preceding month.
14) British Parliament felicitates BCCI President Sourav Ganguly
- BCCI President Sourav Ganguly as the former India captain was felicitated by the British Parliament on 13 July 2022.
- He was felicitated on the same date July 13 when he led India to Natwest final win in 2002 and exactly 20 years later on the same day he was honoured in the same city.
- He was elected as the President of BCCI in 2019.
15) World Youth Skills Day: 15 July
- World Youth Skills Day is celebrated every year on July 15.
- The sole purpose of this day is to provide essential skills to youngsters around the globe so that they can get employment.
- The theme for 2022 is ‘Transforming youth skills for the future.’
- In December 2014, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring 15th July as World Youth Skills Day.
16) Sudhakar Dalela appointed as India’s next Ambassador to Bhutan
- Sudhakar Dalela, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of the 1993 batch has been appointed as the Ambassador of India to Bhutan.
- He will succeed Ruchira Kamboj who has been appointed as India’s next Permanent Representative to the UN.
- Dalela is presently serving as the Deputy Chief of Mission in the Embassy of India in Washington.
- Dalela has also served as Director in the PM’s Office.
