1) India to start supplying petrol with 20% ethanol from April 2023
- India will start supplying petrol with 20% ethanol at select petrol pumps from April 2023.
- Oil minister Hardeep Puri said a fifth of petrol will be made up of ethanol by 2025.
- India achieved the target of supplying petrol mixed with 10% ethanol (10% ethanol, 90% petrol) ahead of schedule in June 2022.
- India is the world’s fifth largest producer of ethanol after the US, Brazil, EU and China.
2) Odisha Government signs pact with NIOT for protecting coastline
- The Odisha govt has signed an MoU with National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) for protection of its coasts.
- According to the MOU, the NIOT will provide technical guidance, design, and drawing of climate resilient coastal protection measures to the state govt.
- Odisha has vast coastline of about 480 km and the coastal areas are exposed to natural disasters.

3) Ace investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala passes away at 62
- Ace investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, known as the ‘Big Bull’ of Dalal Street, passed away on 14 August 2022 at the age of 62.
- With an estimated net worth of around $5.8 billion, Jhunjhunwala was the 36th richest billionaire in India.
- Akasa Air India’s newest budget carrier airline – was one of the business ventures of Jhunjhunwala.
- He was also the chairman of Hungama Media & Aptech Limited.
4) 1082 Police personnel awarded Police Medals in 2022
- A total of 1082 Police personnel have been awarded Police Medals on the occasion of Independence Day, 2022.
- 347 personnel have been awarded for Gallantry while 87 have been awarded for Distinguished Service.
- CRPF’s Charu Sinha bagged 40 gallantry medals, highest in the country among all the forces.
- The maximum gallantry medals have been received by the CRPF followed by the J&K Police.
5) Government reappoints four independent directors on RBI central board
- The Central govt has reappointed four independent directors on the RBI central board for a term of four years.
- The government has re-nominated Satish K Marathe, S Gurumurthy, Revathy lyer & Sachin Chaturvedi as part-time, non-official directors.
- Their current tenure ends on September 18, 2022.
- Non-official directors are appointed for a period of 4 years & are eligible for re-appointment.
6) India adds 11 more wetlands to its list of Ramsar sites
- India has added 11 more wetlands to the list of Ramsar sites bringing the country’s total tally of these sites to 75.
- Of the 11 new sites, four are in Tamil Nadu, three in Odisha, two in Jammu & Kashmir, and one each in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
- Tamil Nadu has the maximum number of Ramsar sites at 14, followed by Uttar Pradesh, which has 10.
- India signed the Ramsar Convention in 1982.
7) 76th Independence Day: 15 August 2022
- In India, 15 August is celebrated as Independence Day every year.
- In 2022, the nation is celebrating its 76th Independence Day, marking 75 years of the country’s independence from British rule.
- The Indian Independence movement began during World War I and it was led by Mahatmal Gandhi.
- The country gained freedom from British colonial rule on August 15, 1947.
8) Retail inflation falls to 5-month low of 6.71% in July 2022
- India’s retail inflation fell to 6.71 per cent in July 2022, the lowest level in five months, as per the National Statistical Office (NSO) data released on 12 August 2022.
- The Consumer Price Index (CPI) based retail inflation stood at 7.01 per cent in June.
- Retail inflation for rural areas declined to 6.80 per cent in July 2022 from 7.09 per cent in June.
