1) L&T bags order from Rajasthan government

  • Larsen & Toubro has bagged a significant order from the Rajasthan government for executing a parallel carrier system to the Rajiv Gandhi Lined Canal.
  • According to L&T’s project classification, the value of the order falls between Rs 1,000-2,500 cr.
  • The project will serve the water demands of districts of Jodhpur, Pali, and Barmer and also supply water to Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor.

 

2) Deepika Padukone, as 1st Indian brand ambassador of Louis Vuitton

  • Actress Deepika Padukone has become the first-ever Indian brand ambassador of luxury brand Louis Vuitton
  • It saw Padukone joining actors Emma Stone and Zhou Dongyu for promotional shots.
  • She was named part of an eight-member jury presided by French actor Vincent Lindon at 75th Cannes Film Festival.

 

3) Tata Group appoints Campbell Wilson as CEO and MD of Air India

  • Tata Group has appointed Campbell Wilson as Air India’s new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director (MD).
  • He is the CEO of Singapore Airlines’ wholly-owned low-cost subsidiary Scoot.
  • Former Vistara CEO Leslie Thng will replace Wilson at Scoot.
  • Singapore Airlines is Tata Sons’ joint venture partner in Vistara, but did not join its Air India bid.

 

4) Leonid Kravchuk, first president of Independent Ukraine Passes Away

  • Leonid Kravchuk, a former communist who helped sign the Soviet Union’s death warrant and then served as the first president of independent Ukraine, passed away at the age of 88.
  • Kravchuk was known as the “wily fox” as he rose through the ranks of Ukraine’s Communist Party.

5) Sherpa woman climbs Everest for 10th time, breaks own record

  • A 48-year-old Nepali woman scaled Mount Everest for the 10th time on 12 May 2022.
  • She broke her own record for the most summits of the world’s highest mountain by a female climber.
  • Sherpa last climbed the 8,848.86-metre (29,031.69-foot) mountain in 2018.
  • A fellow Nepali Kami Rita Sherpa, holds the men’s record of 26 climbs.

 

6) ‘Modi@20: Dreams Meet Delivery’ book launched

  • ‘Modi@20: Dreams Meet Delivery’ was launched by Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu in May 2022.
  • It is a compilation of chapters written by domain experts, PM Modi’s cabinet colleagues and major personalities.
  • The book is a rare compilation that gives the readers a ringside view of the evolution of one of the most popular and iconic leaders of modern India.

 

7) First Image Of Milky Way’s “Doughnut-Shaped” Black Hole Revealed

  • Astronomers unveiled first image of a supermassive black hole at the centre of our own Milky Way galaxy, a cosmic body known as Sagittarius A*.
  • The image depicts not the black hole itself, because that is completely dark, but the glowing gas that encircles the phenomenon, which is four million times more massive than the Sun, in a bright ring of bending light.

 

8) Worldline India and Bank of India to digitise e-challan for MP Police

  • Worldline, a global leader in payment services, has partnered with Bank of India to digitise e-challan collections for Madhya Pradesh Police Department.
  • Bank of India has provided over 600 Worldline Android Terminals to MP Police Department to facilitate e-collections.
  • This initiative will enable MP Police to accept online payments for challans and offer convenience to the residents.

 

9) Winners of Pulitzer Prize 2022 announced

  • Winners of the Pulitzer Prize 2022 were announced in May 2022.
  • The Netanyahus by Joshua Cohen won in the fiction category.
  • Frank: sonnets by Diane Seuss won in the poetry category.
  • First awarded in 1917, the Pulitzer Prize recognizes excellence in journalism, literature, and musical composition.
  • The categories include Public Service, Breaking News Reporting, Feature Writing, etc.

 

10) Malaysia to host 2027 SEA Games, Singapore in 2029

  • Malaysia will host the 2027 SEA Games and Singapore the 2029 edition.
  • The 2021 Games in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi were delayed six months because of Covid and are set to officially open 19 May 2022.
  • The 2023 SEA Games are scheduled to be held in Cambodia and 2025 will be in the Thai capital Bangkok.

11) Dr. Frank Wilczek Receives 2022 Templeton Prize

  • Frank Wilczek, a Nobel Prize-winner theoretical physicist and author, receives the 2022 Templeton Prize.
  • The Templeton Prize, valued at more than $1.3 million, is one of the world’s largest annual individual awards.
  • Established by the late global investor and philanthropist Sir John Templeton, it is given. to honor those who harness the power of the sciences.

 

12) Esha Singh and Saurabh Chaudhary win gold in mixed team pistol event

  • Esha Singh and Saurabh Chaudhary won the mixed team pistol gold at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany on 12 May 2022.
  • India’s Palak and Sarabjot Singh settled for the silver medal after losing to Esha and Saurabh 16-12 in the gold medal match.
  • Ramita and Paarth Makhija also won silver in the 10m air rifle mixed team competition.

 

13) UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed passes away

  • Born in 1948, Sheikh Khalifa was the second President of the UAE and the 16th Ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
  • Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan served as the president of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi since November 3, 2004.
  • Under his reign, the UAE has witnessed an accelerated development that ensured decent living for the people calling the country home.

 

14) Exports up 30.7% to $40.19 bn in April; trade deficit widens to $20.11

  • India’s merchandise exports rose 30.7% to $40.19 billion in April 2022 aided by growth in sectors like petroleum products, electronic goods, and chemicals.
  • The trade deficit, although, widened to $20.11 billion, as compared to $15.29 in April 2021.
  • Meanwhile, imports too saw a growth of 30.97 % to $60.3 billion.

 

15) Retail inflation accelerates to 7.79% in April 2022

  • India’s retail inflation soared to an eight-year high of 7.79% in April 2022.
  • The previous high in the consumer price index-based retail inflation was recorded at 8.33% in May 2014.
  • Food inflation reached a multi-month high in April and remained elevated due to higher vegetable and cooking oil prices.
  • Inflation in the food basket rose to 8.38% in April from 7.68% in the preceding month.
