1) World Organ Donation Day: 13 August

  • World Organ Donation Day is observed on 13 August to spread awareness about the importance of organ donation.
  • It was first celebrated in 2005 by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Society for Organ Donation (ISOD).
  • The theme for World Organ Donation Day 2023 is “Step up to volunteer; need more organ donors to fill the lacunae”.

 

2) Amit Shah inaugurates development works worth Rs 1052 cr in Gujarat

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated various development works worth Rs 1052 crore in Gandhinagar, Gujarat on 13 August 2023.
  • The development works were done jointly by the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat.
  • Amit Shah laid the foundation stone for the widening of 4 lane road from Randheja to Balwa in his Lok Sabha constituency.

 

3) India beat Malaysia 4-3 to win Asian Champions Trophy for fourth time

  • India has won the fourth Asian Champions Trophy hockey title with a 4-3 win over Malaysia in Chennai, Tamilnadu.
  • India is the most successful team in the history of the tournament.
  • Kim Jaehyeon from Korea was awarded the Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament award.
  • Mandeep Singh was awarded the ‘Player of the Tournament’ with a total of three goals in seven matches.

 

4) Vienna is named the most liveable city in the world for the 4th time

  • Singapore ranks 10th among Asia-Pacific cities in the latest Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) ranking of the most liveable cities in the world.
  • Vienna is named the most liveable city in the world for the fourth time in five years.
  • The four Indian cities in the study, New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Bangalore, are ranked between positions 45 and 50 among Asia-Pacific cities.

 

5) UP government to build country’s largest IT Hub in Lucknow

  • The Uttar Pradesh government has announced to set up the country’s largest IT hub in Lucknow.
  • The IT hub will be located on 40 acres of land in the Nadarganj Industrial Area of Amausi on Kanpur Road.
  • The hub will be divided into three parts: IT Park, Business Park, and International Incubation Facility Center.
  • The IT Park will be constructed on 11.47 acres.

 

6) President to launch advanced frigate Vindhyagiri in Kolkata on 17 Aug

  • President Droupadi Murmu will launch Vindhyagiri, a Project 17A Frigate, on 17 August 2023 in Kolkata.
  • Vindhyagiri is the sixth ship of the Project 17A Frigates, which are follow-ons of the Project 17 Class Frigates.
  • Under the Project 17A program, the first five ships of the project have been launched by MDL and GRSE between 2019-2022.

 

7) Khelo India junior women’s hockey league 3rd edition kicks off

  • The third edition of Khelo India Junior’s Women’s Hockey League was launched at the Major Dhyan Chand stadium, New Delhi.
  • Arjuna Award winner and 1972 Olympics bronze medalist Ashok Dhyanchand was the chief guest.
  • A total of 13 teams around India are competing in the tournament which started today and will go on until 22 August 2023.

 

8) CM Yogi Adityanath launches ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign in UP

  • Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath launched the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign in Gorakhpur.
  • The campaign aims to fly the national flag on buildings across the state.
  • The Uttar Pradesh government hoisted 4.5 crore flags across the state last year.
  • The campaign urges residents to participate in Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.
  • Earthen lamps will be lit to pay homage to the sacrifices of soldiers.

 

9) Arunachal Pradesh govt inks MOA with 3 Central govt PSUs

  • The Arunachal Pradesh government has signed an MOA with three Central Government PSU s to allot 12 hydropower projects.
  • The projects will be implemented by NHPC Ltd., SJVN Ltd., and NEEPCO Ltd.
  • The total operational capacity of these 12 projects will be to the tune of 11,517 MW.
  • The State government has initiated the ‘Golden Jubilee Border Village Electrification Program’.

 

10) Google Doodle celebrates 60th Birthday of actress Sridevi

  • Google Doodle celebrates actress Sridevi’s 60th birthday.
  • The illustration was designed by Mumbai-based artist Bhumika Mukherjee.
  • Born in 1963 in Tamil Nadu, Sridevi was barely four years old when she made her debut with Thunaivan, where she played a cameo as Lord Muruga.
  • She faced the camera as a child artiste in movies like Kandan Karunai and Nam Naadu among others.

 

11) India inducts new Heron Mark-2 drones in Northern Sector

  • The Indian Air Force has inducted its latest Heron Mark 2 drones, equipped with strike capability and surveillance capabilities along the borders with China and Pakistan.
  • The drones can be equipped with long-range missiles and other weapons systems and can operate at very long distances for close to 36 hours at a stretch.
  • The drones have satellite communication capability.

 

12) Indian Navy engages in bilateral naval exercise with UAE Navy

  • The Indian Navy conducted a bilateral Naval Maritime Partnership Exercise with the UAE Navy in Dubai on August 8.
  • The exercise aimed to enhance the interoperability and synergy between the two navies through cross-training on tactics, techniques, and procedures.
  • The exercise was conducted by two Indian naval ships, INS Visakhapatnam and INS Trikand
