1) Neeraj Chopra among 11 nominees for men’s World Athlete of Year
- Olympic and world champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra was named as one of the 11 nominees for the 2023 men’s World Athlete of the Year award.
- The 11 nominees were selected by an international panel of athletics experts, comprising representatives from all six continental areas of World Athletics.
- Sydney McLaughlin and Armand Duplantis were named World Athletes of the Year 2022.
2) CIC commemorates 18th anniversary of enactment of the RTI Act
- Central Information Commission (CIC) celebrated the 18th anniversary of the RTI Act.
- CIC has facilitated and disposed of over 3.5 lakh second appeals and complaints.
- Right to Information Act, 2005 was promulgated in 2005 to promote transparency and accountability in the working of every public authority.
- The Act gives citizens the right to access information held by public authorities.
3) Govt grants ‘Navratna’ status to RITES Ltd
- RITES Ltd, a central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Ministry of Railways, has been granted ‘Navratna’ status by the Union Ministry of Finance. This makes RITES the country’s sixteenth Navratna.
- Navratna status is given to top-performing central public sector enterprises.
- It gives RITES greater autonomy in decision-making, financial management, and human resource management.
4) 11th Sultan of Johor Cup to be held in Johor, Malaysia in November
- The 11th edition of the Sultan of Johor Cup in 2023 is scheduled to be held in Johor, Malaysia.
- Hockey India has announced the 20-member Indian junior men’s hockey team that will participate in the 11th Sultan of Johor Cup.
- This prestigious tournament is set to take place from October 27 to November 4.
- The Sultan of Johor Cup is an annual under-21 men’s field hockey event held in Malaysia.
5) PM to inaugurate 9th G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit P-20 on 13 Oct
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 9th G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit (P20) on 13 Oct 2023 in New Delhi.
- The Parliament of India hosts the summit under the broader framework of India’s G20 Presidency.
- The theme of the Summit is “Parliaments for One Earth, One Family, One Future”.
- The event will be attended by Speakers of Parliaments of G20 members and invitee countries.
6) NTPC features in Forbes “World’s Best Employers 2023” List
- NTPC Limited, India’s largest energy conglomerate, has been recognized as one of the “World’s Best Employers 2023” by Forbes.
- NTPC ranked 261st out of the top 700 companies in the world, making it the only Indian PSU on the list.
- This recognition highlights NTPC’s people-centric approach and its alignment with global standards in employee practices.
7) IOC suspends Russian Olympic Committee for ‘breach of charter’
- The International Olympic Council’s (IOC) Executive Board on Thursday announced the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) with immediate effect for “breach of charter”.
- The 141st Session of the IOC will be held here from October 15-17.
- The National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Russia was suspended after it decided to include the authority of the NOC of Ukraine.
8) PM to inaugurate 141st International Olympic Committee meet on 14 Oct
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 141st International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session on 14th October 2023 in Mumbai.
- India is hosting the IOC session for the second time and after a gap of about 40 years, the first one was held in New Delhi in 1983.
- The session will allow interaction and knowledge sharing among various sports-related stakeholders.
9) Operation ‘Ajay’: 1st flight carrying 212 Indians from Israel arrives
- The first charter flight under ‘Operation Ajay’ repatriated 212 Indian citizens stranded in Israel due to the ongoing war.
- The passengers were chosen on a ‘first come first serve’ basis for the special chartered flight.
- External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced the launch of ‘Operation Ajay’ to bring back stranded citizens from Israel.
10) Retail inflation eases to 5.02% in September from 6.83% in August
- India’s retail inflation dropped to 5.02% in September compared to 6.83% in August.
- The food price inflation for September stood at 6.56% compared to 9.94% in August.
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had anticipated inflation to moderate from September onwards.
- The inflation based on the consumer price index (CPI) was 6.83 per cent in August and 7.41 per cent in September 2022.
11) R Krishnamoorthi gets Dalip Singh Saund Award for political leadership
- Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi received the Dalip Singh Saund Award for political leadership.
- The award recognizes his dedication to advancing the interests of Asian-American, and Pacific Islander communities in Congress.
- The Asian American Unity Coalition presents the Political Leadership Award to Krishnamoorthi.
- Dalip Singh Saund was the first Sikh, Indian-American elected to Congress.
