2) Today’s History: 12 June 2023

  • In 1761, Balaji Baji Rao also known as Nana Saheb Peshwa died in the battle of Panipat.
  • In 1952, J&K Assembly decided to terminate the hereditary monarchy.
  • In 1964, Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment in South Africa.
  • In 1996, H. D. Deve Gowda, the 12th Prime Minister of India, won the vote of confidence.
  • In 1990, Indian National Satellite (INSAT-1D) was launched.

 

3) World Day Against Child Labour: 12 June

  • World Day Against Child Labour is observed annually on June 12.
  • The day is launched by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to focus on the worldwide extinction of child labour.
  • In 2015, world leaders adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in which they included a clause to end child labour.
  • The theme for the year 2023 is ‘Social Justice for All, End Child Labour!’.

 

4) Three-day G-20 Development Ministers meet begin in Varanasi

  • The G20 Development Ministers’ meeting began on 11 June 2023 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, chaired by the Union Minister of External Affairs Dr S. Jaishankar.
  • The meeting will continue till 13th June and around 200 delegates are taking part in the summit.
  • The state government has decided to gift Gl-tagged Gulabi Meenakari handicrafts to the visiting delegates from G20 nations.

 

5) The SA120 Engagement Group of G20 meet to begin on 12 June

  • The Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG) of India is the Chair of the Supreme Audit Institutions-20 (SAI20) Engagement Group under India’s G20 Presidency.
  • The SAI20 Summit will take place from June 12th to June 14th, 2023 in the state of Goa.
  • The summit will focus on fostering accountability in governance and strategically partnering with governments to respond to global challenges.

 

6) India beats Korea 2-1 to win maiden Women’s Hockey Junior Asia Cup

  • The Indian Junior Women’s Hockey Team won the Women’s Junior Asia Cup 2023, defeating Korea in a final match with a score of 2-1.
  • Hockey India announced a cash prize of 2 Lakh for each player and INR 1 Lakh each for the support staff.
  • Indian captain Preeti was named Player-of-the-Match.
  • Annu and Neelam scored for India, while Park Seo Yeon was the lone goal scorer for Korea.

 

7) UAE emerges as fourth largest investor in India during FY23

  • The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has emerged as the fourth largest investor in India during 2022-23, according to government data.
  • Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) from the UAE to India jumped over three-fold to USD 3.35 billion.
  • Singapore was the largest investor in India with USD 17.2 billion investment in FY23, followed by Mauritius (USD 6.1 billion) and the US (USD 6 billion).

 

8) Novak Djokovic wins record 23rd men’s singles grand slam title

  • Novak Djokovic won his record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam title at the French Open, defeating Casper Ruud 7-6, 6-3, 7-5.
  • With this victory, Djokovic has become the first male player to win three or more titles in each of the four major tournaments.
  • This win also places Djokovic halfway towards a calendar Grand Slam, a feat that hasn’t been accomplished since Rod Laver in 1969.

 

9) Australia Crowned with ICC World Test Championship 2023

  • Australia won the World Test Championship with a 209-run victory over India in the WTC 2023 Final at The Oval, England.
  • Australia became the 1st men’s team in world cricket to win an ICC world title in all three formats.
  • The WTC Final was played between the top two teams in the ICC Test rankings, India and Australia.
  • The WTC was introduced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 2019.
