1) Bharat Biotech partners with CEPI to develop ‘variant-proof’ COVID-19
- Bharat Biotech along with an international multidisciplinary consortium will receive funding of $19.3 mn to support the development of a ‘variant-proof’ coronavirus vaccine candidate.
- The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations announced the latest award under its $200 million programme to advance the development of vaccines that provide broad protection against SARS-Cov-2 variants.
2) Centre of Excellence for Khadi (COEK) to be inaugurated on 11 May
- Union Minister for Micro Small and Medium Enterprises Narayan Rane will inaugurate the first. Centre of Excellence for Khadi on 11 May 2022 in New Delhi.
- It has been set up at National Institute of Fashion Technology as a hub in Delhi and spokes in Bangalore, Gandhinagar, Kolkata, and Shillong.
- The objective is to design apparel, home furnishing and accessories for people of all generations.
3) National Technology Day: 11 May
- National Technology Day is observed on 11 May every year.
- This day is commemorated as an achievement of India’s technical advances, since on May 11, 1998, the country successfully tested nuclear weapons in Pokhran.
- In addition, the first indigenous aircraft “Hansa-3” was tested on this day, besides which, India also performed a successful test firing of the Trishul missile on the same day.
4) Jyotiraditya M. Scindia attends Air Cargo Forum India Annual Event
- Union Minister of Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya M. Scindia on 10 May 2022 attended the annual event of Air Cargo Forum India (ACFI) as the chief guest.
- The theme of the annual event was “10 Million: Vision 2030; Stimulating, Scaling, Steering Air Cargo”
- ACFI is an association of various stakeholders of Air Cargo Logistic Supply Chain Trade and Industry.
5) Bhagwant Khuba to attend Intersolar Europe 2022 from 11 May
- Union Minister of State for Ministry of New and Renewable Energy Bhagwant Khuba will attend Intersolar Europe 2022 to be held from 11-13 May 2022.
- The Minister would deliver the keynote address at the investment promotion event “India’s Solar Energy Market” on 12th May 2022 in Munich, Germany.
- The event is being organized by the Indo-German Energy Forum (IGEF).
6) President confers 13 Shaurya Chakras on 10 May 2022
- President Ram Nath Kovind, who is the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, conferred 13 Shaurya Chakras including six posthumous, on May 10, 2022.
- The awards were presented to the personnel of the Armed Forces during Defence Investiture Ceremony (Phase-1) in New Delhi.
- The President also conferred 14 Param Vishisht Seva Medals, four Uttam Yudh Seva Medals, and 24 Ati Vishisht Seva Medals.
7) Santoor Maestro Pandit Shivkumar Sharma passes away
- Renowned santoor player Pandit Shivkumar Sharma passed away in May 2022.
- A Padma Vibhushan recipient, Pt Shivkumar Sharma was born in Jammu in 1938 and is believed to be the first musician to have played Indian classical music on the santoor.
- He composed music with flute legend Pt Hari Prasad Chaurasia for an array of films such as “Silsila”, “Lamhe”, “Chandni” and “Darr”
8) AIM, NITI Aayog launches the AIM-PRIME Playbook
- The AIM-PRIME Playbook was launched on 10 May 2022 at the Dr Ambedkar International Center, New Delhi.
- The AIM PRIME (Program for Researchers in Innovation, Market Readiness and Entrepreneurship) program is aimed at promoting early-stage science-based, deep technology ideas.
- Other program benefits include the PRIME Playbook, a guide for science-based entrepreneurs and ventures, etc.
9) India’s 1st bio-gas powered EV charging station inaugurated in Mumbai
- Maharashtra Minister Aaditya Thackeray inaugurated an EV charging station powered by bio-gas in Mumbai in May 2022.
- It is India’s first EV charging station powered by bio-gas.
- It generates 220 units of energy from household waste.
- Along with powering street lights, this energy plant will now charge electric vehicles too.

10) Cyclone Asani forms in Bay of Bengal
- Cyclone Asani formed in the Bay of Bengal on 8 May 2022.
- The name Asani has been given by Sri Lanka that means ‘wrath’ in Sinhalese.
- Cyclone Asani is the first storm in the North Indian Ocean region in 2022.
- The cyclone has been predicted strengthen into a very severe cyclonic storm, with wind speeds reaching 118 to 220 km/hour, and remain over east-central Bay of Bengal.
11) ReNew Power appoints Kedar Upadhye as group CFO
- ReNew Power has announced the appointment of Kedar Upadhye as its Group Chief Financial Officer (CFO).
- It has also appointed Vikash Jain as Global General Counsel and Vikram Kapur as Chief Growth Officer.
- All the three leaders will report to Sumant Sinha, Chairman and CEO, ReNew.
- ReNew Power is based in Gurgaon, Haryana and has an asset base of over 10 GW, with around 5 GW operational.
12) 15th session of the COP15 of UNCCD being held from 9-20 May
- The Indian delegation led by Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav has reached at Abidjan, Cote D Ivoire.
- They will attend the Conference of Parties, the 15th meeting of the United Nations Convention. on Combating Desertification (UNCCD COP15) from 9-20 May 2022.
- India had hosted the 14th session from 2-13 September 2019, in New Delhi.
13) Ministry of Tourism participates in Arabian Travel Market, Dubai -2022
- The Ministry of Tourism under its ‘Incredible India’ brand line is participating in the Arabian Travel Market (ATM), Dubai-2022 which is being held from 9-12 May 2022
- It is aimed to promote India as a ‘Must See, Must Visit’ destination.
- The India Pavilion is showcasing India as a ¹365-Day Destination’ and was inaugurated in the presence of Uttarakhand Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj.
14) Danish Siddiqui among 4 Indians honoured with Pulitzer Prize
- Photojournalist Danish Siddiqui is among four Indians honoured with the prestigious Pulitzer Prize 2022 in the feature photography category.
- Siddiqui and his colleagues Adnan Abidi, Sanna Irshad Mattoo and Amit Dave from the Reuters news agency have won the award.
- This is for the second time that Siddiqui has won the Pulitzer Prize.
- He was killed in 2021.
15) Cipla inks pact with Genes2Me to launch COVID-19 RT PCR test kit
- Cipla has launched a COVID-19 RT PCR testing kit in the country in partnership with diagnostics firm Genes2Me.
- It is called “RT-Direct multiplex COVID-19 RT PCR” test kit.
- The kit is validated by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
- It will also increase the throughput of any testing lab by threefold compared to the normal RT-PCR test protocol time of 120-150 minutes.
16) World Lupus Day: 10 May
- May 10 is observed as World Lupus Day.
- It aims at spreading awareness about this autoimmune disease that can affect the brain, skin, kidneys, and other organs of the body.
- This disease is also known as systemic lupus erythematosus or SLE.
- The most common symptoms of Lupus disease are intermittent fever, recurrent mouth ulcers, joint and muscle pain, and extreme fatigue.
17) Max Verstappen wins the first-ever Miami Grand Prix
- Red Bull’s reigning champion Max Verstappen won the first-ever Miami Grand Prix after defeating Charles Leclerc, on 8 May 2022.
- Carlos Sainz Jr from Ferrari and Sergio Perz from Red Bull came third and fourth, respectively.
- The F1 season will continue on May 22, 2022 when Barcelona will host the Spanish Grand Prix.
18) Oman’s Commerce Minister on a visit to India from 10-14 May 2022
- A 48-member delegation led by Oman’s Commerce Minister H.E. Qais bin Mohammed al Yousef is on a visit to India from 10-14 May 2022.
- The visit comes in the backdrop of the India-UAE trade deal and trade talks with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
- During the visit, both sides would be participating in the 10th Session of the India-Oman Joint Commission Meeting on 11 May 2022.
