1) Maharashtra Governor inaugurates the 22nd ‘Bharat Rang Mahotsav’
- Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari inaugurated the 22nd ‘Bharat Rang Mahotsav’ at Rabindra Natya Mandir in Mumbai on 9 August 2022.
- It is a 5-day theatre festival which is being organized by the National School of Drama under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav campaign.
- The festival will showcase plays of renowned theatre directors based on the life and sacrifices of our freedom fighters.
2) Ramadhar Singh: 1st Indian psychologist on US Heritage Wall of Fame
- Ahmedabad University professor Ramadhar Singh has been marked on the ‘Heritage Wall of Fame’ of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP) in the US.
- With this, he has become the only social psychologist from India to receive this honour.
- He has been honoured by the SPSP for his extraordinary contributions to social psychology and management.
3) Famed Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake passes away
- Renowned Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake passed away on 9 August 2022.
- He was known to work with traditional & modern fashion techniques during his long career.
- By the 1980s he was celebrated as one of the world’s most pioneering designers as he worked with materials from plastic to metal.
- He was awarded the prestigious Kyoto Prize for his dedication to the arts in 2006.
4) Sunil Chhetri & Manisha Kalyan named AIFF Footballer of Year
- Manisha Kalyan & Sunil Chhetri have been named the AIFF Women’s and Men’s Footballer of the year respectively for the 2021-22 season.
- For Kalyan, it was her first Women’s Footballer of the Year award.
- While Chhetri has been honoured for the seventh time with this award.
- He was first named for the award in 2007.

5) Tennis legend Serena Williams announces retirement
- American legend Serena Williams, winner of 23 Grand Slam titles, announced her retirement from tennis on 9 August 2022.
- Serena will play her last match at the US Open, which is starting on August 29.
- Serena is the only woman to have recorded more than 65 wins across all four Grand Slams.
- She last won a Grand Slam title in 2017 at the Australian Open.
6) World Biofuel Day: 10 August
- World Biofuel Day is observed every year on 10th August to create awareness about the importance of non-fossil fuels as an alternative to conventional fossil fuels.
- This day also honors the research experiments by Sir Rudolf Diesel who ran an engine with peanut oil in the year 1893.
- The World Biofuel Day is being observed by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas since 2015.
7) 44th Chess Olympiad ends; India’s men & women team win bronze medal
- The 44th Chess Olympiad, which was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi in Chennai on 28 July concluded on 9 August 2022.
- India ‘B’ team settled for a bronze medal in the Open section while India ‘A’ women’s team finished third.
- The Uzbekistan team won the gold medal in the men’s section.
- The next edition of the Chess Olympiad will be held in Budapest in Hungary in 2024.
