1) RBI keeps repo rate unchanged at 6.5%
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has kept the key lending rate unchanged at 6.5% for the third time in a row on 10 August 2023.
- RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das announced that the Monetary Policy Committee has unanimously decided to keep the policy repo rate unchanged.
- The RBI raised the inflation forecast for the current financial year from 5.1% to 5.4% due to rising vegetable prices.
2) Maharashtra Government initiates State employee database update
- The Maharashtra Government has issued a directive aimed at modernising the comprehensive database of its employees to understand the actual strength of every department and office under it.
- The Planning Department released an official order seeking specific details, including gender, caste, religion, joining and retirement date, birth date, and bank account particulars of employees.
3) Kerala Assembly passes resolution to rename ‘Kerala’ as ‘Keralam’
- The Kerala Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a resolution urging the Central Government to change the name of the state from ‘Kerala’ to ‘Keralam’.
- The resolution was moved by CM Pinarayi Vijayan who stated that the name ‘Keralam’ is used in the Malayalam language.
- Kerala state will celebrate ‘Keraleeyam 2023’ from November 1 to endorse the state’s achievements on a global level.
4) Assam Govt to organise ‘Khel Maharan’ across state from November 1
- The Assam government is going to organize ‘Khel Maharan’ from November 1 to January 10 to identify and nurture sports talents at the grassroots level.
- More than 50 lakh sportspersons will participate and compete in five sporting disciplines – Athletics, Football, Kabaddi, Volleyball, and Kho-Kho.
- State-level events will be held at Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Silchar, Kokrajhar, and Diphu.
5) Odisha CM launches ‘Mo Jungle Jami Yojana’ scheme
- Odisha Chief Minister launched a scheme to aid forest-based livelihood for people.
- The scheme is called ‘Mo Jungle Jami Yojana’ (My forest land scheme).
- It was launched on the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.
- The objective of the scheme is to safeguard the knowledge of indigenous people.
- More than 4,000-gram sabhas have been given collective rights in Odisha.
6) UP govt to run electric buses for 5 districts including Ayodhya
- The Uttar Pradesh government plans to run electric buses to major religious centres in Uttar Pradesh.
- The Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) will include 250 electric buses in its fleet in the first phase.
- The corporation has requested a 40% gran under the ‘Fame India Scheme’ Phase 2.
- Ayodhya, Kashi, Prayagraj, Mathura, and Chitrakoot will be connected with Lucknow.
7) SSB unveils 54 feet tricolour in Siliguri’s Ranidanga
- Director General Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) Rashmi Shukla on 9 August 2023, unveiled a 54-feet high national flag at Siliguri’s Ranidanga as part of the final phase of ‘ Azaadi ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations.
- On this day 81 years ago, in 1942, the Quit India movement was launched.
- CEO of Flag Foundation of India and officials from Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam also participated in the event.
8) Rajya Sabha passes Bill to expand SC list from Chhattisgarh
- Parliament, on 9 August 2023, passed the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order Amendment Bill 2023.
- The Bill amends the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order 1950 to modify the list of Scheduled Castes in Chhattisgarh.
- The Bill includes Mahara and Mahra communities as synonyms of the Mehra, Mahar, and Mehar communities in Chhattisgarh.
9) Central Railway inaugurates new Amravati station as Pink Station
- Central Railway has inaugurated the New Amravati station as the first “Pink Station” in the Bhusaval Division.
- New Amravati station is the third station on Central Railway to be fully managed by an all-women staff.
- The station has a team of 12 women employees who manage its operations.
- The term “Pink Station” refers to railway stations that are fully managed by women employees.
10) World Lion Day: 10 August 2023
- Every year on August 10, World Lion Day is observed to highlight the importance of Lions and to garner support for their conservation.
- It was first established in 2013 by Big Cat Rescue, the world’s largest accredited sanctuary dedicated to lions and it was co-founded by Dereck and Beverly Joubert.
- In 2009, the Jouberts approached “National Geographic” and formed the Big Cat Initiative.
11) Parliament passes Anusandhan National Research Foundation Bill, 2023
- The Anusandhan National Research Foundation Bill, 2023 passed by Parliament to establish a National Research Foundation (NRF) to fund and promote research in India.
- The Bill will provide high-level strategic direction for research, innovation and entrepreneurship in the fields of natural sciences.
- The Act will also repeal the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) Act, of 2008.
12) Meity launches Indian Web Browser Development Challenge (IWBDC)
- The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) launched the Indian Web Browser Development Challenge (IWBDC) on August 9, 2023, in New Delhi.
- The challenge is an Open Challenge Competition that seeks to inspire and empower technology enthusiasts to create an indigenous web browser.
- The proposed browser would have its own trust store with an inbuilt CCA India root certificate.
13) Centre launches sale of chana dal as ‘Bharat Dal’ at Rs. 60/Kg
- The Government launched the sale of chana dal in retail packs under the brand name of Bharat Dal at Rs. 60/Kg to make pulses available to consumers at affordable prices.
- Bharat Dal is being distributed through retail outlets of NAFED, NCCF, Kendriya Bhandar and Safal.
- Stock limits have been imposed on tur and urad under the Essential Commodities Act, of 1955 to prevent hoarding.
14) World Biofuel Day: 10 August
- World Biofuel Day is commemorated on 10 August every year to create awareness about the importance of non-fossil fuels as an alternative to conventional fossil fuels.
- On this date in 1893, German inventor Sir Rudolf Diesel successfully used peanut oil to operate a diesel engine.
- It has been celebrated by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas since 2015.
15) Pakistani president approves dissolution of National Assembly
- President Arif Alvi dissolved the National Assembly on the advice of outgoing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, ending the current government’s tenure and paving the way for next general elections.
- The notification for the dissolution of the assembly was issued by the President under Article 58 of the Constitution.
- The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) would hold elections within 90 days.
