1) Know About: World Trade Organization

  • ” The World Trade Organization (WTO) is an intergovernmental organization that regulates and facilitates international trade.
  • It officially commenced operations on 1 January 1995, pursuant to the 1994 Marrakesh Agreement
  • The WTO is the world’s largest international economic organization, with 164 member states representing over 98% of global trade and global GDP.
  • Headquarters: Switzerland

 

2) Know About: Swachh Survekshan

  • Swachh Survekshan is an annual survey of cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation in villages, cities and towns across India.
  • It is conducted by Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and is the world’s largest urban sanitation and cleanliness survey.
  • The first survey was undertaken in 2016 and covered 73 cities.
  • The surveys are carried out by Quality Council of India.

 

3) Bank of India Mutual Fund appoints Mohit Bhatia as CEO

  • Bank of India Investment Managers Private Ltd has announced that it has appointed Mohit Bhatia as its chief executive officer, effective 4 October, 2022.
  • His last assignment was with Canara Robeco Asset Management Company Ltd. as head-sales and marketing.
  • Bank of India Investment Managers Private Ltd is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bank of India.

 

4) Scientists find new evidence for liquid water on Mars

  • An international team of researchers has found new evidence for the possible existence of liquid water beneath the south polar ice cap of Mars.
  • The results were published in the journal Nature Astronomy.
  • The researchers, led by the University of Cambridge with involvement from the University of Sheffield, used spacecraft laser-altimeter measurements to identify subtle patterns in its height.

 

5) World Bank cuts India’s GDP growth forecast to 6.5% for 2022-23

  • The World Bank on 6th Oct 2022 cut its 2022-23 (FY23) real gross domestic product (GDP) growth forecast for India to 6.5%, from an earlier estimate of 7.5%.
  • This is the 3rd time the World Bank has revised its GDP growth forecast for India in FY23.
  • In June 2022, it had slashed its FY23 GDP growth forecast for India to 7.5%.
  • Earlier in April 2022, it had trimmed the forecast from 8.7% to 8%.

 

6) World Cotton Day: 7th October

  • World Cotton day is celebrated every year on 7th October as a global celebration of cotton and its stakeholders.
  • At the initiative of the Cotton-4 (Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad and Mali), the World Trade Organisation made the launch of World Cotton Day on 7th October 2019.
  • Cotton is a multipurpose plant chiefly used in the textile industry.
  • 2022 Theme: “Weaving a better future for cotton”!

 

7) Savita Punia & PR Sreejesh win FIH Goalkeeper of the Year awards

  • India’s PR Sreejesh & Savita Punia have been voted FIH Men’s & Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year 2021-22, according to the International Hockey Federation (FIH).
  • Savita has become only the 3rd athlete to win this award for consecutive 2 years since the inception of the award in 2014.
  • While Sreejesh has become the 2nd player to win the award 2 consecutive times.

8) Nicole Mann: First Native American woman astronaut in space

  • US astronaut Nicole Mann has become the first Native American woman to go to space following a NASA launch on 5th Oct 2022.
  • Mann, 45, is one of four astronauts who blasted off from Florida on 5th Oct bound for the International Space Station (ISS).
  • The mission in which Mann is taking part is named ‘Crew 5’ and it was using a launch vehicle that comprised a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

 

9) Justice Dinesh Kumar appointed as presiding officer of UAPA Tribunal

  • The government has appointed Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma of the Delhi High Court as the Presiding officer of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal.
  • He has been appointed to review the ban on the Popular Front of India (PFI) and its associates.
  • The centre has recently banned PFI for five years, after seizing incriminating documents.

 

10) French writer Annie Ernaux awarded Nobel Prize in literature

  • French author Annie Ernaux was awarded Nobel Prize in literature.
  • Her most critically acclaimed book was “The Years” (Les annees), published in 2008.
  • The prize for 2021 went to the Tanzanian-born, U.K.-based writer Abdulrazak Gurnah, whose novels explore the impact of migration on individuals and societies.
  • The 2022 Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on 7 October 2022.

 

11) Prashant Kumar appointed as Yes Bank MD & CEO

  • Veteran banker Prashant Kumar has been appointed as the Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer of Yes Bank for a period of three years.
  • The RBI on 6th Oct 2022 approved the appointment of Kumar.
  • Before joining YES Bank, Kumar was the Deputy Managing Director & CFO of the SBI.
  • Yes Bank is an Indian bank headquartered in Mumbai.

12) ISA’s 5th Assembly to be held in New Delhi from Oct 17th to 20th

  • International Solar Alliance’s (ISA) 5th Assembly will be held in New Delhi from 17th to 20th Oct 2022.
  • Union Power, New & Renewable Energy Minister R.K Singh will preside over the Assembly.
  • Currently, India holds the office of the President of the ISA Assembly.
  • Delegates from 109 Member Countries will participate in this meeting.

13) RBI launches ‘DAKSH’ application to advance supervisory process

  • The RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das on 6th Oct 2022 launched a web-based application called ‘DAKSH’, to make the supervisory processes more robust.
  • It will monitor compliance requirements in a more focused manner with the objective of further improving the compliance culture in Supervised Entities like Banks & NBFCs.
  • It will also enable cyber incident reporting & analysis.

14) Know About: International Hockey Federation

  • The International Hockey Federation, commonly known by the acronym FIH, is the international governing body of field hockey.
  • FIH conducts field hockey’s major international tournaments, notably the Hockey World Cup.
  • FIH was founded in 1924 in Paris by Paul Léautey, who became its first president.
