1) Kiren Rijiju, Anurag Singh Thakur launched Fit India Freedom Run 3.0

  • In honour of Gandhi Jayanti, Fit India Freedom Run 3.0 was launched at the Major Dhyanchand National Stadium in New Delhi.
  • The third edition of Fit India Plog Run was jointly introduced by Union Ministers of Law and Justice Shri Kiren Rijiju and Shri Anurag Singh Thakur.
  • October 2, marked the beginning of the third iteration of the Fit India Freedom Run, which will last until October 31.

3) Kerala’s Pullampara Declared First Fully Digital Literate Panchayat

  • The Pullumpara village panchayat in the Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala has become the first totally digitally literate panchayat in the country.
  • The announcement was made by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan at a public event.

4) PNB launches WhatsApp banking for customers and non-customers

  • Punjab National Bank (PNB) announced that it has made banking services available to both clients and non-customers via WhatsApp.
  • Customers must save the official PNB WhatsApp number (919264092640) and start a conversation by texting a hello or hi to this number in order to enable the banking feature on WhatsApp.

5) Non-cooperation movement (1920-22)

  • Through non-violent means, protesters refused to buy British goods & adopted the use of local handicrafts by spinning khadi.
  • People also relinquished their titles & resigned from nominated seats in the local bodies as a mark of protest.
  • Indian National Congress also demanded Swarajya or self-govt.
  • Gandhiji called off the movement in Feb 1922 in the wake of the Chauri Chaura incident.

 

6) World Space Week: ISRO

  • The Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR) was established by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1962 under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE).
  • Eminent scientist Dr Vikram Sarabhai had a big role in this development.
  • The INCOSPAR became ISRO in 1969.
  • The first Indian spacecraft ‘Aryabhata’ was launched using a Soviet Launcher.

7) Know About: AIIMS

  • The All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is a group of autonomous govt public medical universities under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.
  • The first AIIMS was established in 1956 in New Delhi.
  • As of Jan 2022, 19 AIIMS are operating in the country.
  • These institutes have been declared by an Act of Parliament as Institutes of National Importance.

 

8) World Space Week: ISRO’s New Mission

  • Gaganyaan: ISRO will first launch two unmanned missions into space ahead of the manned trip.
  • Objective: to demonstrate an indigenous capability to undertake a human space flight mission to Low Earth Orbit (LEO).
  • Aditya L1: This is the first Indian mission to study the Sun.
  • Chandrayaan-3: It’s a ISRO’s third lunar exploration mission, the objective of which is ‘soft-landing on the Moon!

 

9) India’s second National Model Vedic School inaugurated in Puri

  • Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on 4th Oct 2022 inaugurated the country’s second Rashtriya Adarsh Veda Vidyalaya (RAVV) in Puri, Odisha.
  • Objective of RAAV or National Model Vedic School: to spread knowledge of the Vedas among people & to promote the Sanskrit language as well.
  • Maharishi Sandipani Rashtriya Ved Vidya Pratishthan is the first such school in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain.

 

10) National Wildlife Week: 2nd to 8th October

  • India observes National Wildlife Week from October 2 to October 8 every year in an effort to protect and preserve wildlife.
  • In the year 2022, the 68th edition of the National Wildlife Week is being celebrated.
  • The idea of a ‘National Wildlife Week’ was proposed by the Indian Board of Wildlife in 1952 while the first ‘Wildlife Week’ was commemorated in 1957.

 

11) India emerges as world’s largest producer of sugar

  • India has emerged as the world’s largest producer and consumer of sugar and its second-largest exporter.
  • In sugar season (Oct-Sept) 2021-22, a record of over 5,000 lakh metric tons (LMT) of sugarcane was produced in the country.
  • Record highest sugar exports of over 109 lakh metric ton has also been registered.
  • These exports earned foreign currency of about Rs 40,000 crore for the country.

 

12) Carolyn Bertozzi, Morten Meldal & K Barry Sharpless win Nobel prize

  • The 2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been jointly awarded to Carolyn Bertozzi, Morton Meldal & Barry Sharpless for their work on snipping molecules together, known as ‘click chemistry!
  • Their work is used to explore cells & track biological processes and can be applied in cancer treatment drugs.
  • Sharpless also won a Nobel Prize in 2001 for his work on chirally catalysed oxidation reactions.

 

13) World Cerebral Palsy Day: 6th October

  • World Cerebral Palsy Day (WCPD) is observed on 6th October every year & it was started by the Cerebral Palsy Alliance in 2012.
  • Aim: to draw worldwide attention to cerebral palsy and find ways to help this condition.
  • Cerebral palsy refers to a group of neurological disorders that appear in infancy or early childhood and permanently affect body movement and muscle coordination.
